Elective section - How long in hospital?

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 03/12/2007 19:30

I am booked for an elective section on Wed am.I had an elective section 4 years ago as daughter was in awkward position and recovered v quickly but had to stay in 5 days.

I was really hoping for vbac this time as I gave birth naturally to a stillborn dd 2.5 years ago and wanted so much to deliver living baby. But on examination today was only 1cm and posterior so said induction out (am overdue now and they want baby out asap because of stillbirth risks and so do i)

Was hoping that i would not have to stay in 5 days.Anyone had one and stayed in less?
thanks x

The NICE (NICCE?) clinical standards say that if, after 24 hours, you are not feverish, you can be discharged.

Ideally, if you have your section before noon, it's easier to get out the next day (long story, hospitals are weird).

I had an elective section, and signed myself and my baby out, against medical advice (but with support of my mw) after 48 hours or so (two nights). I had an 'emergency' section (not crash, not really emergency either) and was officially discharged 30 hours later.

Oh, and good luck, sorry to hear about your DD. Bring big pants, and straws.

muppetgirl · 03/12/2007 19:33

Hi my lovely friend delivered by c-section on the friday and left hopsital (as I had just come in having started labour!!) on the Sunday. 2 nights in all. They did want her to stay 3 nights initially but she was desperate to get home.

Good luck with everything
x

I left after 2 days with section number 3. Felt fine so took off. They can't make you stay. It really is up to you.

ShowOfHands · 03/12/2007 19:33

I had an emergency section at 10pm at night. The following morning at 10am they were ready to discharge me. So 12 hours. I would have left then too but the paeds wouldn't discharge dd so I had to stay an extra night with her.

muppetgirl · 03/12/2007 19:34

It was an elective c-section too. She delivered just after midday.

Camillathechicken · 03/12/2007 19:34

just wanted to wish you all the best for wednesday, you can do a birth plan for an elective c.s

music, blanket for baby to be wrapped in, skin to skin, baby not washed before being given to you, you can ask for the screen to be lowered so you can see the birth.

ceebee74 · 03/12/2007 19:35

I have only (so far) had an emergency section (although it wasn't a proper emergency) and stayed in for 3 nights - which was absolute torture but another lady in the same ward had her section the same day as me and they let her out after 2 nights - mainly (I think) because it was her second child/c-section so they were more confident about her ability to cope.

ceebee74 · 03/12/2007 19:35

Sorry - meant to add good luck for Wednesday x

NotQuiteCockney · 03/12/2007 19:37

I'd be careful about taking music.

I still can't listen to the album I had on while I had my elective section for DS1 (who is fine now, totally). I miss that album .

Camillathechicken · 03/12/2007 19:38

sorry to hear that NQC

For me, 36 hours. But I don't recommend it - I felt every bump in the road going home (ouch!). Be prepared to write off the first 48 hours.

I asked for early discharge because I was immobile and did not feel I was getting support on the post-natal ward from the midwives with my crying ds plus the hospital banned my dh from visiting for a large part of the morning. I got teary.

By day 5, the stitches came out and I was 90% back to normal.

chocpeanut, I do hope your elective goes well with a speedy recovery and you will hold your dc in your arms soon.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 03/12/2007 20:41

That makes me feel a lot better.

I will see how I feel but will aim to be out for Friday thats two nights three days

good luck for wednesday, most c-sections where I work tend to be in for at least 2 nights.

PurpleLostPrincess · 03/12/2007 21:12

Sorry to hijack but I hunted you down CP as I was wondering how you are doing?! You probably don't remember me from the pg after m/c thread as I haven't been on there for ages but I was thinking of you. Sorry you've got to have a cs when you wanted a vbac but hope it all goes well. I bet you'll just love holding your new dc in your arms whichever way he/she has arrived!

See you on the success after m/c thread soon!

PLP xxx ((hugs))

Bauble99 · 03/12/2007 21:21

Looking forward to seeing the birth announcement.

beautifulsnowydays · 03/12/2007 21:30

i had dd by elective section at 12 noon on the wednesday i left hospital about 6pm on the friday.

good luck

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 03/12/2007 21:40

I had emerg cs at 6am on Sunday and was home for lunch on Monday. I asked to leave then, and I felt ready to go.

Tips for a fast exit (if you feel ready and are not in any pain):

Drink as much water as possible after the cs. Once your wee goes clear they will agree to have the catheter taken out - but at your prompting.

Ask to have the canular taken out of the back of your hand asap. They catch on your clothes and are a pain in the arse.

Take your pain medication bang on time.

Get up and walk as soon as possible.

Get back to your normal self and don't let yourself become too much of a patient!

Obviously you have to do it at your pace, but I found doing the above I recovered really quickly.

Good luck!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 03/12/2007 23:33

depends on you and how you feel BUT

1st section - emergency - 5 days
2nd section - elective - stayed 5 days
3rd section - had it fri morning - went home sunday morning.

No 2 I went home to a 2 1/2 yo with sn and no home help.

no3 - dh was off for 2 weeks and I knew I would get more rest at home than I was getting in hospital.

IntergalacticWalrus · 04/12/2007 07:01

fifisworld · 04/12/2007 09:35

Ive posted on the Dec thread but,
Had emergency c/s with ds at 1.30 am Sat, came home Sunday night about 7pm.
This time im having elective cs next Thursday and i want to come home either Friday night or Sat morning at the latest all being well.
I hate hospitals

augusti · 07/12/2007 11:16

2-3 days normal if all well

GloriaInEleusis · 07/12/2007 11:23

First section - 3 days
Secend section - 2 days

If you stay on the ward and they need your bed, they'll let you go sooner.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 07/12/2007 11:39

After my el cs on the 29th dec, they let me home the morning of the 31st.
It depends how well you're doing, I was doing the baby stuff myself, whereas a girl on the same ward was obviously feeling it harder and calling for the midwife everytime the baby cried, or she needed to move etc, she had been there for a couple of days before me.
