i went to the gp the day ds2 was born

bozza · 29/11/2007 21:53

The newborn check was done by the on call doctor for DD because it was Saturday so the surgery was closed. I did have to go a couple of weeks later though for the newborn hearing test they do these days.

stripeymama · 29/11/2007 21:54

They sent a local doctor out to do dd's check - think this is normal practice.

Piffle · 29/11/2007 21:55

nope Gp is booked to visit you at home where I am
I was a late HB transfer with ds2 and my Gp still came out on day 3
Sadly I was out dropping dd off at school and missed her as she never called
Assumed as GP's must that having a baby means you'll be house bound for a few weeks.

LilyLoo · 29/11/2007 21:56

Well done you Scorpio

So it can be done at local gp or doc will come to you ?

Had nightmarish visions of having to go up to hospital with new baby and dc's and waiting around to see doc.

Thanks

i think they asked me if i wanted a visit but i said i was fine to go out (felt normal(ds2) - hoping this again this time!)

S1ur · 29/11/2007 21:58

My gp visited us at home the following day or so - both times. Midwife passed details to hospital then they contact gp who phoned to make time to come round, I think that's what happened according to dp! Then took them to hospital for hearing test weeks later.

sweetkitty · 29/11/2007 21:59

We had to go up to the hospital at an appointment time the midwife gave us the day after DD2 was born. They stuck us in a side room for nearly an hour with 18 month old DD1 and me a day post partum, we were just about to leave when a doctor showed up.

Next time will be asking for a doctor to come to us.

motherinferior · 29/11/2007 21:59

GP came round.

morocco · 29/11/2007 22:00

mw came round the next day and did it

ja9 · 29/11/2007 22:00

we had to go to the hospital the next day for dds hearing test and paed check.

S1ur · 29/11/2007 22:02

I quite liked gp coming round, gave me more confidence to ask about things and plus didn't have to get dressed - which is always a plus!

Flamesparrow · 29/11/2007 22:02

GP came round in the evening to do it with DS.

They did want me to go in for stitches I gave them a "like hell!" glare... they called for a trained midwife

jamila169 · 29/11/2007 22:04

GP came round both times -I hear there was a bit of squabbling about who was going to come ans squish the baby
For most GP's it's such a novelty that they jump at it

S1ur · 29/11/2007 22:05

my mw did stitches at home straight after birth, very expertly too. And encouraged me to suck on G&A for it, since I hadn't used it yet and "well it's here now, you may as well!" - Oooh it was great, when else could you possibly giggle when someone is sewing up your fanjo?!!?

Loshad · 29/11/2007 22:05

GP came round both times here as well

mears · 29/11/2007 22:06

Not all GPs are trained to do neonatal examinations now, so they don't always come. Midwives have been trained in some areas so they do it. In other areas yo are asked to take baby up to hospital.

sweetkitty · 29/11/2007 22:07

What if you aren't up to travelling mears, I was lucky I was fine after DD2 but didn't really want to be going out the day after (although did go to Asda afterwards )

MrsSlowLearner · 29/11/2007 22:08

Midwife came out the following day.

LilyLoo · 29/11/2007 22:09

Guess i will have to check with midwife then, don't really fancy trip up to hospital though so will def agree for them to come to me if they offer
Slur will remember that one !

I've had 3 homebirths, and the midwife informed the GP who did a couple of visits (one within 24 hours and the other a week later).

JenT · 29/11/2007 22:14

GP came to us both times - but we live directly across the road from the surgery and went over to them the day after ds1 was born to return the syringe and pethedine which I didn't use so would have happily seen a gp there. but there system is just set up that they come to you.

Good luck hope all goes well for your Homebirth

sweetkitty · 29/11/2007 22:16

Oh they are going to love me again up the antenatal club, I was the first homebirth the two MWs had ever done (they were in their 50s), it's just not the done thing here, physiological third stage (I was telling the MWs to relax the placenta will come I'll just put the baby to the breast), breastfeeding past 6 months (MW told me it was more for the mothers benefit than the babies ) and now I will be telling them I want a GP to come out and check the baby over.

I remember going up the health centre for DD2s 8 week jabs and talking to a few other 8 week olds mums and they were like "oh YOU were the homebirth how was overdue, the Mws talked about you every day!"

Yorky · 29/11/2007 22:46

We were supposed to get a visit from GP but she called and said she wsa running late and could we go to the surgery! Took 1day old to surgery for newborn check, then to hospital at 5days old to get hearing check, which he didn't even need taking out of his car seat or waking for! Didn't sit around for ages for either one though

Rohan · 04/12/2007 15:48

The midwife came the next day to do the newborn check.

Then I didn't see her again for a week
