Upset about being induced tomorrow

R1cciteddy · 05/08/2021 09:03

I'm being induced tomorrow and I am just gutted. I'm being a wuss, I'm just sad that I could be stuck in hospital for days - I just need to think about the end goal and meeting baby, but I can't snap out of being negative. I guess Covid rules makes it worse as I have to go alone and partner can only come for a couple hours a day to visit and during active labour. They said I needed induction due to slightly more fluid round baby and baby measuring big which has risks. I know so many people go through it, I feel like I need to man up! I've had such a perfect pregnancy I guess I just didn't expect this and haven't had much time to mentally prepare. Not sure what I want from this post but just wanted to write something!

Also just wondered if the process is better if baby is in a good position? I know s/he is in a good position and was 2/5 engaged 1.5 weeks ago

You don't have to be induced - ask them what signs there are that the baby needs to come now. Just having reached a particular dates means nothing about whether you need to be induced. Get them to monitor you instead.

I'm sorry to hear this - but just to offer a positive story, I was induced in the morning on arrival, spent most of the morning reading magazines in bed, then had just 1 hour of active labour and DS was born for 1pm. He was in a good position, and I also had more fluid than normal.

Good luck for tomorrow!

Oh lovely, I think you've got a case of pre baby hormone wobbles. I was induced with all three of mine and in the days when men were only allowed on the wards for a couple of hours anyway because those were the rules. It was an amazing experience every time. You are going to rock this, soon you will have a lovely new baby and trust me you won't notice who is there or not because all you will be capable of is gazing at the new person you made.

And FYI I had a good quick labours under induction, just needed a helping hand to get started, seems once they break my waters my body was ready to go.

R1cciteddy · 05/08/2021 09:36

Thanks everyone! I will write down a lot of questions for tomorrow and ask before I agree to anything.... but I have done a lot of research and because of the condition (polyhydramnios) I know it's in best interest for baby to go through with an induction.

Yes I definitely have pre baby hormones!!

Thanks for your replies, it definitely helps 😊

I was induced with all 3 of mine.
3 very different experiences, but 2 of them I basically had a natural birth once the pessaries kicked in.

Induction doesn't have to mean you lose your birth plan.
I also was very clear that I was not going to lie down. (they wanted me to because they like to continually monitor the baby if induced.)

The midwives were amazing and allowed me to walk round, stand etc and I gave birth squatting. My choice.

You can refuse induction if you want to. Unfortunately, level of engagement has no impact on anything really as they can pop in and out at any time, including during labour.
Bennetgirl · 05/08/2021 15:47

How many weeks are you? You could ask for the balloon method where I believe you can go home?

R1cciteddy · 05/08/2021 16:12

Hi @Bennetgirl I'll be 40 weeks. I'm feeling a lot better now. I think my hormones are all over the place and now feeling happy that baby will be on its way safe and sound very soon. I'll still make sure I ask some questions before committing to anything though.

No idea if this means anything but getting very slight twinges down towards my pelvis...hoping that means baby is at least a bit ready!

Thanks @steppemum will definitely try to do the same

I was induced OP; tbh I felt an element of control, knowing that once I was at hospital it was very unlikely I'd be sent home until I had my baby. This helped keep me calm. It was a bit of a drawn out process - DS was back to back and I became dehydrated, and the birth process was much more "medicalised" than I would have liked, and I think if I was told I had to be induced again I'd ask to wait until 41 weeks wherever possible. Knowing when I'd be going in did help me with my planning and prep - not going to lie though I spent the night before going in eating a curry, bouncing on a ball, drinking a glass of wine then spending "quality time" with my DH to try to avoid it!! Wishing you an easy, calm labour.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 05/08/2021 16:20

Welcome to motherhood! A lifetime of doing what's best for your child whether you want to or not!🙄

Hopefully your things mean your baby is getting itself ready to come & say hello!

Hoping this turns into a 'birth' thread 😊

Bennetgirl · 05/08/2021 16:25

@R1cciteddy I was dreading induction with dd3. It wasn’t actually that bad.

Get a bag ready with snacks, magazines etc.

Hopefully at 40 weeks your body will be ready to go. Good luck x

Notonthestairs · 05/08/2021 16:29

I was induced first time around (also polyhydramnios) . First few hours I was encouraged to walk around and in particular walk up the stairs sideways (keeps baby in the right position). The build up was pretty slow to be honest. If you can take headphones, magazines etc.

I'm sure they will take good care of you.

squirrelnutkins1 · 05/08/2021 16:31

I was induced this time 1 year ago! Baby arrived two days later. Enjoy lying in bed and taking it easy. All the best!

LittleBitOfMayo · 05/08/2021 16:32

I was induced at 38 weeks. You can ask for gas and air for the pessaries being inserted. I never knew this until my second to last pessary Grin.

Wishing you all the best and a speedy induction.

Sounds like baby is getting ready for you anyway! Grin.

Cosmosgrowinmygarden · 05/08/2021 16:44

Good luck OP! Let us know how it goes 😊

R1cciteddy · 05/08/2021 17:05

@movingadviceneeded yep I've eaten a pineapple, been sniffing clary sage, been ball bouncing, bathing and pretty much a week of nesting Grin

I might try the glass of wine!

But have definitely come to terms with it and starting to feel excited!

LOVE an up-to-the-minute birth thread!!

mrssunshinexxx · 06/08/2021 17:11

Are you ok ? @R1cciteddy

R1cciteddy · 06/08/2021 17:30

@mrssunshinexxx ah I'm okay, embarrassingly cried a lot when I first got here.. I've never had to be in hospital before so was just weird for me. Feel okay now and staff have been really good.

I had Dilapan S which are these rods they stick up you to ripen the cervix. They gave me gas and air which I loved! Process was fine, not painful.

It's a newish method - no chemicals or hormones which should dilate me enough for them to break my waters. It takes 12-15 hours, but unfortunately I can only do as an inpatient due to having Polyhydramnios.

They said I should go into labour after waters breaking, but I've since read that often the drip is needed too.

Fingers crossed. I'm definitely feeling okay. Just so far from what I thought my birth experience would be!!xx

@R1cciteddy Parking my bum! Hope things are going well OP!

ConstantlyIrksome · 06/08/2021 17:42

I'm in exactly the same position as you OP - 40 weeks tomorrow and have a large for gestational age baby plus mild polyhydraminos so am fully expecting to end up with an in-patient induction next week as baby shows no sign of coming on her own. Had an uncomplicated water birth last time and was hoping for a home birth this time round so definitely in mourning for the loss of this and really worried about induction. Hope all goes well for you, I'll be following!!

R1cciteddy · 06/08/2021 18:04

@ConstantlyIrksome it's gutting isn't it! I only found out a week ago on my first day of maternity leave so I've just been worried all week. But now I'm here the worry is gone.

my first advice is that if you haven't been in hospitals / needed to be monitored much.... it's pretty much the first thing they did when I got here. I just wasn't expecting it and it did upset me. But it was only to check our heart rates.

Also not sure what hospital you'll go to but check partner visiting hours. Mine, he can only come 2 hours a day and when I'm in active labour because of Covid. I know other hospitals aren't as strict

Hope baby comes before then for you... but if I'm okay you'll be fine. I couldn't have been more of a wimp Grin
