If your due date is on a weekend are they likely to do it late the week before or early the week after ? Obviously the hospital doesn't do planned sections on weekends and mine don't do Fridays either by due date is a Friday

In my experience (3 sections), they schedule it on a day when your consultant is in surgery rather than clinic, at around 39 weeks. This means I have had sections at 38+2 (aiming for 38 weeks due to twins), 40+2 (aiming for 39 weeks) and 39+1 (aiming for 39 weeks). It's about scheduling theatre time with your consultant (or their registrar) rather than hitting bang on 39 weeks.

Good luck!

EvilOnion · 14/05/2021 16:43

My ELCS was scheduled for 39+5 as that's when my Consultant was available.

mrssunshinexxx · 14/05/2021 17:59

@HappyAsASandboy @EvilOnion thanks both sorry if I'm being really dumb but my consultant won't be doing the surgery Isit just if something went wrong ??

My consultant wasn't in theatre as he was on annual leave that week but he booked me in with a colleague according to his schedule.

HappyAsASandboy · 18/05/2021 22:17

Consultants each have a small team of registrars working with them. The consultant (and their registrars) will have surgery days and clinic days. You'll probably be booked in on a surgery day for the consultant you've been assigned to, though you're more likely to have a registrar do the surgery with the consultant available to advise if necessary.

If you go in to labour before the scheduled date, then whoever is assigned to surgery that day will do the surgery as an emergency case as well as then doing their planned cases.

Unless it’s earlier for health reasons it should be until 39+0 at the earliest as per NICE guidelines. If you turn 39+0 on a Saturday then it won’t be until the following Monday at the earliest. I’m surprised at places doing it at 38+5 due to consultant availability unless there’s a reason why that’s the only doctor who can do it.

Toddlermum1990 · 22/05/2021 00:39

My due date is this coming Tuesday the 25th and I have my elective c section 2 days ago on the 19th, so was 39 weeks and 1 day. They said to me unless for serious medical reasons it wouldn't even be booked in until minimum 39 weeks to allow babies lungs to fully mature.

mrssunshinexxx · 22/05/2021 07:51

Thanks @Toddlermum1990 may I ask if you are BF and if so have you had any issues with milk coming in with baby being born early ?

As others say, due to health concerns I had both mine at almost 37 weeks. Week days for both, one much earlier than planned.
Milk came in straight away, absolutely no issues breast feeding from the get go.

Suzi888 · 22/05/2021 08:25

No milk for 5 days after, came in when I had a hot shower at home. Was freezing in hospital! I wasn’t planning to bf though, my MW told me to let her know in advance if I was intending to bf as may have issues due to c sec.

Hufflepuffsunite · 22/05/2021 08:28

I had my elcs at 39+3. Absolutely no issues with breastfeeding.

didireallysaythat · 22/05/2021 08:28

You can Google for the NICE guidelines- it used to be 39 weeks but maybe have been updated since I had mine

waaaaah · 22/05/2021 08:38

In Sept 2020 mine was scheduled for 39 weeks but they were busy doing EMCSs that day so I returned the following day and had it then

mrssunshinexxx · 22/05/2021 12:40

Really don't want it to cause issues with feeding my 10month old is still feeding now so if she carries on which I'm happy for her to then I shouldn't have any issues as milk already 'in'

Mines booked in for 39+6. There was no other availability before that date.

jackstini · 22/05/2021 23:28

I had mine at 39+5

reginafalange2020 · 22/05/2021 23:30

I've had 2 elective sections and they were both in the 39th week. I think 39+1 and 39+2

jackstini · 22/05/2021 23:30

Just saw your question re breastfeeding
My milk came in around day 4 but fed colostrum from around an hour after birth
All the best Smile

mrssunshinexxx · 23/05/2021 00:26

Thank you @jackstini

I had 1 emergency c section and 2 planned.

Planned ones were at 39 weeks exactly.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 25/05/2021 18:43

Planned ELCS at exactly 39 weeks. Wasn’t my consultant doing the surgery. In the initial consultation he said they normally do it at 39 weeks so pulled up that week on the calendar, asked what day I would like (I was surprised to be asked so said I didn’t mind) and he booked me straight in for that date. He said he didn’t have his rota yet and that I had a 10% chance of date change but otherwise that would be it and it was.
They had me expressing colostrum from 36 weeks and baby was feeding within an hour of birth. Obviously that’ll be different if you already have an established supply

Theseptemberissues · 25/05/2021 18:53

I turned 39weeks in a Sunday and had the choice of any day mon-fri after as was a quiet birth week! No problems with milk coming in Smile

mrssunshinexxx · 25/05/2021 20:06

Thanks all @Theseptemberissues @SingingWaffleDoggy my hosp does them mon to thurs my change over week day is Friday so I'll either be 38+6 the thurs before or 39+3 on the Monday I would much prefer the thurs before but not sure if they would do that early?

OP posts:
Theseptemberissues · 25/05/2021 20:35

@mrssunshinexxx my trust wouldn’t do the 38+6, it would be the 39+3 x

EverythingWasGolden · 25/05/2021 20:38

I suspect it will be 39+3 or later for you. They have said to me it's between 39th and 40th week. My last one was 39+0 but it was a Thursday and they had availability in theatre that day.
