C-section how many days were you in hospital

I’m considering pushing for a c section due to episodes of arrhythmia and the fact I am already anxious about child birth. How long were you kept in hospital after the delivery?

That's how it happened for me , however a lady on the ward with me had developed an infection so I think she was told she needed to stay in for a further few days so I don't suppose you can ever really know until you have had the section. I was having a vaginal delivery up until an hour before she was born and I was then rushed in for an emergency section! So called 'birth plans' very rarely go to plan! Main thing is you and baby are safe and well.

Serafinaaa · 07/04/2021 12:57

I think it can vary. I was told I could leave after one night. I had to walk slowly and do things carefully for a couple of weeks. I didn't have any pain needing more than paracetamol and it only lasted a few days. I found it a much easier recovery than my previous instrumental vaginal birth.

CatRatSplat · 07/04/2021 13:01

15 days and I'm still not sure why but had hellp syndrome so it was an emergency c section.

NoNameIdeas · 07/04/2021 13:04

I had an emergency caesarean in December, baby was born just before 5pm on Sunday evening and I was home by 4pm on Monday. Would've been earlier but there was an emergency so nobody to sign off my last paperwork for a bit!

suzzze · 07/04/2021 13:05

One night for me (planned section) and recovery was a breeze. Planned sections are very different from emergency ones though!

October2020 · 07/04/2021 13:08

5 days... as were the other 3 c section mums in my NCT group. I hadn't even had my catheter out 24hrs later and I certainly couldn't have managed the pain with only take-home meds.

ancientgran · 07/04/2021 13:08

I was 5 days but

  1. Long long ago women stayed in hospital longer
  2. DH made me laugh so much I burst my stitches, it was very painful, midwife wasn't impressed and it was all a bit of a mess.

My top tip? Tell husband he's there to support not entertain and keep his humour to himself.

Aworldofmyown · 07/04/2021 13:10

Emergency was 4 days. Planned was 2 nights then 24hrs for my third. Varies tbh on how you are.

Passionfruitpizza · 07/04/2021 14:15

@Babyontheway21

That’s good to hear, how was the recovery, when did you feel half normal again?
Pretty good this time. Felt back to being able to do most things at 2 weeks. The key is good balance of getting up and about and rest. Back in the gym (under guidance of women's health physio) at about 6/7 weeks.
Babyontheway21 · 07/04/2021 14:53

Thanks your comment ms make it less daunting although either way isn’t a pleasureConfused

I've just had a new baby by ELCS and was out after one night.

With an EMCS a few years ago it was 2 nights

SquigglePigs · 07/04/2021 15:00

I was in for three nights when I had DD two years ago. That was because my bladder took a while to play ball again after the epidural. I was on track to leave after one night until that point.

Cattenberg · 07/04/2021 15:03

@Thebookswereherfriends

I had an emergency c-section, so slightly different. I was in for 6 days as my baby wasn’t feeding very well and they wanted to make sure she was putting in weight before they would release us.
Same here, except I was in for eight days after the birth.

On the positive side, my recovery from the c-section was much easier than I’d feared.

Countrylane · 07/04/2021 15:06

It's quick with elective C sections. I was stuck in for six days, but that's because my baby was stuck in NICU after emergency C section. I could have gone home after one night. 100% wish I'd gone for elective C section over induction.

ForeverBubblegum · 07/04/2021 16:52

With the first (EMSC) I was in 3 nights total, but he wasn't born until 2am first night, and the last night was more because I was struggling with breastfeeding.

With the second (ELSC) I was in about then 24 hours. She was born lunchtime and I was discharged after breakfast the next day.

champions55 · 07/04/2021 17:08

6 days 5 nights but it was an emcs and we both had to get antibiotics and wait for infection levels to come down in baby and I wasn't very well either.

Planned c section but then my waters broke so did labour for 12 hrs before getting the section and I was in 2 days 1 night. They wanted me to stay longer but after the awful experience I had first time round I refused. I was let home with a catheter still in and had to go bk a few days later to get it out and check my bladder was all gd after they made me overfill it to try and pee.

0hMy · 07/04/2021 17:21

Two weeks after an emergency c-section, but that was because DS had an infection. It was during the first lockdown so no visitors and I wasn’t allowed out of the room (luckily I had a side room). It was hard emotionally, but because I was basically stuck within a very small space, my physical recovery was fantastic, as I wasn’t running around trying to cook, clean, look after a baby and heal a massive wound. The main point? Staying in for longer than you’d like sucks, but it does have its advantages.

elliemara · 07/04/2021 18:13

DH made me laugh so much I burst my stitches, it was very painful, midwife wasn't impressed and it was all a bit of a mess.

Omg @ancientgran that sounds horrendous! What happened after that if you don't mind me asking? Is something like that easy to fix again? Was it very dangerous? I didn't even know that could happen Shock

FlyNow · 07/04/2021 22:55

I felt back to normal within a week. Once I was back at home (after 2 days) I didn't really have any problems doing anything in terms of baby or self care. Had to take it easy getting out of bed by rolling on the side, but that's the same as being pregnant anyway. I was fine to go out for a walk with the pram. Everyone's recovery is different though. Good luck with whatever you decide.

whiteflower84 · 07/04/2021 23:03

I was induced Thursday 9am & had her Saturday lunch time by emcs... I begged to go home Sunday tea time & was allowed x

waitingpatientlyforspring · 07/04/2021 23:09

3 nights for me, 5 nights total due to induction and long labour.

Chanel05 · 08/04/2021 09:04

I had an emergency c-section, resulting in a major haemorrhage and transfusion. In hospital for 5 days.

mrssunshinexxx · 08/04/2021 15:00

Had her 4.30am on the thurs was discharged 5pm the Friday but I had my bags packed and ready to go by 9am but they take ages to discharge you

Inthesky42 · 09/04/2021 09:19

1 night, after an emergency c section at lunchtime the day before. I was desperate to leave.

Babyboomtastic · 13/04/2021 16:52

I stayed 2 nights (I was offered discharge after 1 but wanted to stay an extra night so did). Baby was born on the Tuesday, by Thursday I was popping out to the shops walking round pain free and prepping breakfast for my eldest with baby in a sling. I was 90% back to normal within a week, but religiously took painkillers for 2 weeks 'just in case'.
