Anyone gone over 42 weeks?

duckoutofwater · 15/01/2021 21:57

Currently 40+5 with DC2, DC1 arrived early at 36+4 so this is a whole new experience. Will probably opt to be induced at 41+5, but midwife said they could just wait with daily monitoring after 42 weeks to see what happens. Has anyone else done this and how long did it take for baby to turn up?

Is this in the UK? All of the midwives I’ve met prepare you for induction if over 41 weeks as nhs guidelines don’t recommend going over 42

snowone · 15/01/2021 22:01

I went into labour at 40+14. I was booked in for induction that day!

Juk3 · 15/01/2021 22:02

Yes me, although I don't think it was intentional mire of an error when my induction was booked. My second child was born at 43wk 3 days weighing a whooping 11lb. I was on the induction drop for 3 days before it was decided that I needed to go to theatre

AllTheChocolateNow · 15/01/2021 22:03

I went in for induction at 42 weeks and DC1 was born at 42+5. Failed induction and c-section. He just didn’t want to come out.

DC2 came at 37 weeks. Another unexpected turn of events!

AllTheChocolateNow · 15/01/2021 22:03

My DS was 10 lbs 5 oz.

Beecham · 15/01/2021 22:04

There are no set rules but personally I feel it's an unnecessary risk to go so far over.
Why take any risk? Some hospitals/midwives won't let you. With my dc2 I was told that I HAD to book in a C-section at 42wks, which is what ended up happening, as there was zero sign of imminent labour.

AliceinBunniland · 15/01/2021 22:06

I would recommend not going past 42 weeks.

What a lot of people don't know is that babies are lost due to complications at around 40 weeks +. It's rare but things like cord accidents and placenta issues can happen around this point. I would advise not to go past 42 weeks. I thought they induced at 40+10 anyway in the UK.

Hazelmazel · 15/01/2021 22:06

Yep I have. Went to 40+18 with my third with daily monitoring. Had a home birth (I have v short labours) and all was absolutely fine. The midwives were totally happy with me waiting, I think largely because it was my third and I'd had two very straightforward births (albeit overdue) before.

Knobblybobbly · 15/01/2021 22:08

Yep, my baby was born at 42+1 with induction. Even then she took nearly 24hrs.... narrowly missing being a 42+2 baby. The midwives would have been happy to let me go another couple of days i think, I felt like I rushed them into it. They predicated off have a very small baby so maybe that’s why they were happy to let me go on??

She ended up being over 7lb, so not tiny.

Knobblybobbly · 15/01/2021 22:09

I think I should phrase it as 40+15

wfrances · 15/01/2021 22:16

I wasn't allowed over 42 weeks.
All four of mine had to be induced.
My last baby , went to the wire and I was told it would be a section if I didn't deliver that day ( day 14 )

Fifilafrog · 15/01/2021 22:17

Yep. 42 + 2 and went into natural labour on the day I was due to be induced but that's only because they didn't believe me when I said I KNEW the date I conceived. I kept telling them
She was cooked. Was 11lb on the nose.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/01/2021 22:18

I swapped hospitals half way through my first pregnancy and they disagreed with the dates that the first hospital had given me.

By the first hospital’s reckoning I was 42 +5 when ds arrived, but only 42 by the second hospital’s calculations!

I was booked induction at 11 am being 41+5 and thankfully gave birth at 6 am that morning so didn't need the induction after all. If baby hadn't arrived on its own on 41+5, I think adding 3 extra days I would have been 42+1.

Igmum · 15/01/2021 22:28

15 days late and induced. I kept asking for advice at the time and was told that it was pretty safe until 17 days over so I aimed to avoid risky delay while hoping things would happen naturally.

Trumplosttheelection · 15/01/2021 22:31

42+1 for me, induced on 42 weeks. This was more than 20 years ago however and I was early twenties. If I was having a baby now I would have got twitchy at 41 weeks. I don't trust a placenta as much as I did.

Oneandabean · 20/01/2021 17:46

There’s a lot of misinformation on here. Nobody can force you to have an induction or cs, it’s your body and your decision. However you would need to be regularly monitored as the placenta starts to not be as efficient and the risk of still birth increases so you need to keep that in mind. You always have the final say in all choices surrounding childbirth and it’s totally fine to question decisions and look at alternatives.

It’s very dangerous to be posting misinformation like this.

After 42 weeks the rate of stillbirth increases from 1 in 1000 to 1 in 500.

For that reason most U.K. hospitals have a policy of offering induction at 40+10 to give time for it to work before suggesting a c section.

You should weigh the risks of being post term with the risks of induction/c section as these aren’t risk free options either.

SnowFields · 20/01/2021 17:52

You will likely have to sign documentation saying you understand the risks to your baby and increased chance of a completely avoidable and unnecessary stillbirth if you want to go that far over. You will also have to live with the knowledge you went against advice and directly contributed to your baby dying.

If you ever go to a SANDS meeting (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity) you’ll find many women who regret their decision to go over.

I know this sounds harsh but some people really don’t understand the possible consequences.

Inthesky42 · 20/01/2021 19:34

I wish I hadn't pushed to let everything happen naturally. I was 40+10 when I went in for monitoring, they said membranes had been leaking for days, baby had no water left, he'd lost weight, I was rushed down for induction immediately, put on the drip fetal distress in labour, emergency c section. I wish I had accepted the induction a few days earlier. He nearly didn't make it.

MotherWol · 20/01/2021 20:57

I was 42+2 when DD was born; induction was booked for 42, labour started naturally on the day so it was postponed to 42 + 1 but my labour stopped so went back in for induction. Failed to progress and DD was delivered by EMCS at 42+2 at 4.5kg.

With hindsight I feel it was incredibly risky to wait that long; I’d been offered an earlier induction but I was scared of the interventions. I think now I’d go for an earlier induction or ELCS. I’m pregnant now and will be going for an ELCS if DC2 looks like another latecomer.

This. Nice guidelines say you should be offered induction OR frequent monitoring.

Mine are slow cookers (& I was too apparently) all over 42 weeks & one was over 43. It is exhausting standing your ground though Flowers
