Can anyone help? Induction agony

Hi, I came to be induced yesterday at 40 + 1 as I am 40, and advice is not to go over due date. I had a sweep at 38 + 5 but it didn’t work.

It’s no ones fault but it just seems to me baby wasn’t ready. I was 1cm at 38 + 5 and I was still 1cm yesterday. I had the pessary put in and it’s just all been a bit of a nightmare, everything I was terrified of has happened.

I think the baby must have moved and what started out as discomfort moved to really unbearable pain (I was crying!) but the ward is so busy and there was no pain relief for four hours. Then I got some contractions but these stopped.

I feel absolutely bursting full of fluid, and I have this near constant pain to empty my bladder but barely anything comes out. And now I have pains in my bottom. They are struggling to find the baby on the monitor and having to be strapped to the bed is horrendous, I honestly feel as though someone is pushing knives up my bum (sorry)

They want to break my waters later but I just don’t think I can. I can’t take it. Can I say no, I want them to go naturally? Or insist on a c section? I wanted an elective because I had a feeling my back wouldn’t stand the pressure and I think I was right.

you can absolutely have an epidural before they break your waters. It’s more likely you’ll need intervention later on (hormone drip) but you can still have it. Or if you’re just desperate to get it all over with, ask for a section. Might take a bit of pushing but don’t take no for an answer. Good luck!

Checking back in to see how you are doing

Hello, just to update - they did manage to break my waters, and I had an epidural. Things got a bit difficult though and I ended up with an emergency section, which was actually so easy compared to what I’d been going through.

I now have a beautiful baby DS. I am a bit biased but I think he’s just absolutely gorgeous. Just trying to get breastfeeding established now!

Ahhhh, congratulations :)

Congratulations!

I'm sorry you had such a difficult labour. Ignore anyone who trills about how they had no pain relief for theirs - being induced is very different to natural labour, and can be v hard to cope with.

Enjoy your beautiful son, and if you find you are having flashbacks or feel traumatised, please contact your hospital's "birth afterthoughts" service. I had a horrible induction which resulted in a forceps delivery, and went to the afterthoughts service 3 years later. It really helped, I should have gone earlier.

Congratulations again! You are a Mum! Flowers

My experience is limited and dates back a long time. I had an epidural as soon as I was put on the oxytocin drip, before I was in pain but because of hearing horror stories about other women's experience with oxytocin. I was very glad I did because when the contractions started the baby's heart rate dropped and I had an EMCS. Because of the epidural I was able to be awake for the birth, it would have been GA otherwise.

This sounds like such a good idea. I wish my hospital had had something like this.
