FTM - how long were your first labour's?

And also is/was the length of labour for your immediate female family members indicative of your own potential labour duration, too?

Thanks

3 hours with my first, 45 minutes with my second.

My mum had quick labours too, 8 hours with first and 1.5 hours with second

PlinkPlink · 17/08/2020 12:11

DC1 was 5 hours active labour.

DC2 was 1 hour active labour.

DC1 labour was more manageable in terms of pain relief because it was longer. I had the injection and gas&air. Mechanically speaking my body had an adequate amount of time to get the oxytocin coursing through my veins - necessary for natural pain relief.

DC2 was back to back which made it difficult and she was in a rush. My body was shaking alot because I had tonnes of adrenaline being pumped out. Not the hormone you want 😂

I was a short and easy labour too.

DD is 8 weeks. I would 100% do it another 3 times at least if she wasn't such a big baby. 9lb 15oz... ill stop right there for the sake of my vagina thanks 😂

If you're looking for some comfort I'd recommend reading Ina May Gaskins Guide to Childbirth. Fantastic read and it gave me lots of comfort knowing about the mechanics of birth.

@Margo34

Oh gosh such a range!

I asked about the family connection as my sisters, one was 2.5hours start to finish including latent phase first time (1.5 hours all in with her second) and my other sister was 4 hours all in first time, 2 hours all in the second.

I don't want to be too optimistic or laid back expecting a short ish labour only for it to turn into a 3day labourathon 🙈

Thanks all!

Every birth is different. My SIL had a 30+ hour one, a 4 hour one and a 12ish hour one. Pain levels were different for all three too so tge 4 hour one wasn't the easiest actually.

Go in with an open mind. It will end. You will have a baby. There are pain relief options.

YouBoggleMyMind · 17/08/2020 12:14

Went into labour at 38+2
Start to finish 26 hours
Established labour 9 hours.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/08/2020 12:17

My mum had fast labours, I was 8 hours (her first) my sister was 1.5 hours from first twinge.

I however laboured for about 6 weeks, or so it felt like! I went into spontaneous labour at 39+5 and it was roughly 36 hours from first contraction to holding Dd. Was absolutely knackered because I was so excited at having contractions I didn’t sleep! Do not recommended Grin

Kinsters · 17/08/2020 16:23

About five hours for my first including maybe an hour of pushing, can't really remember but I remember asking the midwife if she'd be born on the 5th or the 6th and she was born at 00:46 so I think it was at least an hour.

My mum's labours were quick and easy as well. Her first was me and my sister and she was induced in the morning and we were born around 5pm so maybe 8 or 9 hours.

Blossomorange · 17/08/2020 17:01

First baby Was late and water broke day after a Second sweep but not contractions, so induced. Labour went quickly after that (a few hours after drip). Second baby, mucus plug, bloody show then early Pain free “labour“ All day. Active hugely painful labour started immediately after water broke Following a sweep - baby born 30 mins later.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 17/08/2020 21:27

36 hours back to back labour - 3rd time I went into hospital I was 10cm and my body had already started naturally pushing him out without me really knowing. 20 mins of actual pushing and he was born.

My mums labour with me was 50 mins start to finish.

My sisters labours were 24 hours or so.

So all 3 of us completely different!

20viona · 18/08/2020 02:09

I was induced and once they broke my waters my daughter was born 2.5 hours later. My mum and nan also had very quick births.

YerAWizardHarry · 18/08/2020 02:22

5 days between waters breaking and birth
27hrs between put on the syntocin drip and emergency csection. Mum had very straight forward, quick births (including full-term twins born naturally)

TerraMirabilis · 18/08/2020 02:35

28 hours. Much longer than my Mum's which were I think pretty average at around 10-12 hours first time.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 18/08/2020 03:04

Waters broke at 11:30 p.m. and DD was born about 5:30 a.m. So 6 hours that I was aware that o was in labour- I’m sure there were signs before but I didn’t notice them. My Mum’s labour with me was similar.

DS was induced at 39 weeks and was 3 hours start to finish.

Rtmhwales · 18/08/2020 03:36

5.5 hours, my mum was 43hours for me.

My best friend just had hers two weeks ago and she was 53 hours. So it's a huge variety.

longtimecomin · 18/08/2020 04:14

4pm on Friday to 10am on Saturday so 16 hours. You'll find a real range though.

LynseyLou1982 · 18/08/2020 18:22

24.5 hours from start to finish. 12.5 hours with no pain relief just a TENS machine then 12 with an epidural. 1.5 hours of pushing and ended with an episiotomy and ventouse delivery. Due number 2 in October in hoping it's not as long but want to make sure I get to hospital in time for another epidural. My mum said it was 4 hours total with me.

Frazzled13 · 18/08/2020 19:41

Pretty much bang on 24 hours from first contraction to birth. Was pushing for 40 mins.

DramaAlpaca · 18/08/2020 19:44

My first was 21 hours. There's no correlation between me & my DM as she had a planned c-section with me, her first.

butterflycatcher · 18/08/2020 20:11

My mum gave birth to all three of us within a few hours, infact she nearly had my sister on the toilet and me in a corridor!

Unfortunately it took my DS 6 days to arrive from the first contraction! I had an extremely long latent labour stage as he was back to back.

7dayslater · 18/08/2020 20:16

My mum was in labour 48 hours with me.

I laboured just under 6 hours with DS & went home the same day. Smile

sanityisamyth · 18/08/2020 20:17

80 hours. Started 11pm on 24th December. DS finally arrived 7am on 28th December.

moonlight1705 · 18/08/2020 20:17

64 hours in total from first contraction although like others, I had annoying irregular contractions that were sometimes 3 in ten minutes then dwindled to 1 every ten minutes and ramped up again.

Waters broke in the hospital cafe after two days of latent labour and I was 4cm. It only took another 18 hours, 2 hours of pushing and an emergency c section to get her out as she had got her head stuck. It was also a back to back labour so perhaps that makes a difference.

Megan2018 · 18/08/2020 20:20

6hr vaginal delivery for me. 2 non progressing long labours ending in EMCS for my poor mother!

Fortheloveofscience · 18/08/2020 20:31

3 hours from first contraction to delivery (first baby). My DM's shortest delivery was 24 hours.

nonchalantbee · 18/08/2020 20:33

Coming up to 3 days. 23 hours from 4cm onwards so 'active labour', DS was back to back so struggled more to come down the birth canal. No relation to family members my mums labours ranged from 7 hours to 30 minutes with each sibling.

Flynn2019 · 18/08/2020 20:36

Mine was approximately 6 hours. I was supposed to be induced as 12 days past due date however, I went into spontaneous labour. After they broke my waters baby was in my arms within 2 hours.

My sister was also induced with my niece as she was also 12 days after due date. She did require the drop but once that was administered my niece was born within 51 minutes.

My mum had a terribly long labour with my older sister, over 24 hours. With me, her waters broke in m&s and once she arrived at the hospital I was born 30 minutes later.

I really think its the luck of the draw. I did drink raspberry leaf tea by the gallon after I was 32 weeks and will do the same with number 2 who is due march 2021 x
