Hi guys I'm in the ward now about to have the 24hr pessary but just wondering what other peoples experiences have been. How quick it's worked .. if it hasn't worked ... just experiences? Thank you in advance x

Don't have any advice sorry but following as I'm due to be induced in 5/6 weeks and also wondering how it's going to go...

Wishing you lots of luck and a speedy labour Thanks😃❤️🤞🏻

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 12/07/2020 12:49

Not been induced myself but I believe you're at a better advantage if your cervix is ready. How far along are you and is your cervix favourable? Good luck!

DuggeeHugs · 12/07/2020 13:35

It didn't work for me, I had an EMCS 104 hours after the first pessary went in. But, they didn't tell me my Bishop Score was 0, so it had almost no chance of working anyway.

Find out what your Bishop score is - if it's below 5 then your chances of success are much smaller.

Also, and this is the bit I wasn't told, you do not have to consent to an induction. In my case an ELCS would have worked much better, I just wasn't given the choice.

Fingers crossed all goes well for you Smile

Worked for me. I was given the pessary at midday on a Wednesday and they removed it midday Thursday and broke my waters. Had a few twinges on Wednesday but that was it and contractions started a couple hours after they broke my waters.

DS was born at 11:36pm that night so around 9ish hours in labour.

And focus on your breathing when they put the pessary in, it was uncomfortable and took me by surprise. But fine otherwise. Best of luck!

Hiphopopotamus · 12/07/2020 15:37

Sorry to say it didn’t work for me - the pessary did sod all except give me painful pointless contractions. I then had gel inserted three separate times, which again, induced contractions but did naff all to my cervix. Waters were then manually broken, and I was put on the drip - a lot of hours and one episiotomy later I had a baby. Not an ideal birth and I’d be reluctant to accept an induction so early next time (my hospital pushes them as standard at 41+5) DD was only 7lb3 when she was born and clearly just wasn’t ready to come out, despite being two weeks late according to dates. Next time I would certainly ask to hang on a bit longer with monitoring before being induced,

Cheesey21 · 12/07/2020 15:52

I got the pessary at 1pm on the Thursday and baby was born 1.55pm on the Friday. Labour started properly for me after about 5/6 hours.

grisen · 12/07/2020 16:07

Good luck OP. My one advise would be to have a clue what EMCS is like and that an EMCS can be very relaxing, straightforward thing.
I am forever grateful that whilst being induced I read an article on EMCS, so when it came to it I had a clue what was going on.

I really hope your Bishop score is better than mine or @DuggeeHugs

Lockdownmum1010 · 12/07/2020 16:10

Pessary went in at 2.30pm, didn't feel a thing until 1.30am when contractions started with a vengeance, then baby was born by 10am!

AccountAntsy · 12/07/2020 16:11

It did nothing for me, after 24 hours I ended up having my waters broken manually and put on the drip which started things off and labour was straightforward and uneventful from then on. But I was admitted at the same time as 3 other women who all had the pessary, went into labour and had their babies before anything even started happening for me so it’s not a given! I was induced at 38 weeks due to GD so I think she just wasn’t ready to come out. Good luck!

linerforlife · 12/07/2020 16:13

Worked for me - pessary inserted and baby born less than 5 hours later Grin labour started near immediately. Good luck and enjoy your lovely baby!!

wannabemummy123 · 12/07/2020 16:19

So I had the pessary at 1pm .... and nothing so far. Not even a niggle or a twinge ... 😩 just don't want to have to wait 24hrs 😩 then possibly more stuff 😩

DuggeeHugs · 12/07/2020 16:39

Ah, the waiting is so strange.

Time to go for a nice, long, socially distanced walk around the grounds to see if it gets things moving!

Did they have your Bishop score?

wannabemummy123 · 12/07/2020 17:32

Didn't tell me it. But I went for a 90min walk around the car park with my fiancé. He came outside to meet me as obv he isn't allowed in right now xx

I had the gel, not pessary. I had my little boy 12 days ago. Gel at 4pm. Waited 6hrs then they broke my waters. 2hrs later no change, so the drip was started. They kept stopping & starting the drip due to my baby’s heart rate. It’s was a very long night & I was exhausted I won’t lie. But once the drip kicked in properly it was quite quick. First stage 1hr 5 mins & 2nd stage of pushing 50 mins. It was more a long drawn process then anything else.

Spam88 · 12/07/2020 20:02

How are you getting on OP?

I was having mild contractions within about 8 hours of the pessary going in I think, DS was born about 30 hours after it was inserted.

I know the waiting is near torture but just try to relax and enjoy your last little bit of peace before the baby arrives. Read a book or watch some tv, preferably whilst bouncing on a birthing ball!

wannabemummy123 · 12/07/2020 20:11

Well I am getting very mild contractions now. More like cramps with tightening. They hurt but not terribly. Every 3-5 mins or so. So I'm seeing how they're going. They started about a hour ago getting gradually worse x

Good luck OP! I’m being induced today as well. Pessary in at 4pm and nothing so far!

DuggeeHugs · 12/07/2020 20:28

Sounds promising, good luck OP!

Fingers crossed for you @Showmethecake

wannabemummy123 · 12/07/2020 20:32

@showmethecake I didn't feel anything until just after 7... so that was 6 hours after the pessary. Did you have the 24 hour one also? Xx

OP posts:
Showmethecake · 12/07/2020 20:41

@wannabemummy123 yep 24hr one. I was induced with my last baby and I’m sure things started sooner. Just being impatient!
Hope things are progressing nicely for you

Mummyme87 · 12/07/2020 20:41

Good luck. Just remember, the aim of the pessary is to favour your cervix to have your waters broken, not to put you into labour.... albeit that sometimes happens. Waters being broken and using syntocinon drip is all part of the induction.

misstoblerone85 · 12/07/2020 20:42

I was induced with my second 16 weeks ago. Pessary in at 7 am, waters went about 10:30. I was 4 cm by 12:00 and baby was born at 14:08.

I did labour quickly with my first though, arriving at hospital with 40 mins to spare.

Good luck. Sounds like things are starting to happen for you

wannabemummy123 · 12/07/2020 20:53

@Showmethecake I was getting so angry that nothing was happening that I'm greatful for these little pains I'm getting now. I just hope they progress 😩

And that is everyone for your replies they're really handy. Xx
