cord round neck?

what percentage of babies are born with cords around their neck? it's my understanding that this is a common occurance. and that the presence of it isn't a indiciation for c-section (without any other factors).

on other threads i hear statements like- "good thing they did a c-section, because the cord was wrapped around my babies' neck".

DS was born with cord round neck. They were checking me out with a view to doing a ventouse, saw I was nearly ready to get him out, but because cord was round his neck, they didn't want to wait any longer so did the ventouse.

My mum lost a baby 40 years ago as the cord was wrapped around his neck .

It is a fairly common occurance but easily rectified if the midwife is experienced and capable, which unfortunately wasnt the case for my mum who was left with a trainee who went hysterical whn she saw the head come out

DD was born with cord around her neck. MW calmly looped it of her head (I was in bath at home) and then she came out after the next push, very angry blue baby girl!

dd was like that too kerrymum except i think they cut the cord first then found it is hard for a baby to breath while still got sac stuck to face. but i could be wrong - it seemed to be in that order. they had to peel the sack off it was pretty well stuck on

To answer OP, I don't thin kthey know the cord is round neck in most vaginal births until teh head is delivered.

However, I think one of hte causes of distress and decelerations with contractions is cord around neck..which if it gets serious enough would lead to c sect IYSWIM.

My DD3 wasn't born with cord around neck - it was too short!!!
Don't know about DTDs but TBH I had other thinsg to worry about lie the fact that they were a)born at 27 wks and b) DTD2 was footling breech.

DD2 had the cord around her neck; midwife just unwound it as soon as her head emerged; she was perfectly fine. I think it's pretty common, but as for the statistics I'ven't a clue

after i posted this i routed around in my copies of the practicing midwife, and i found an article on nuchal cord management.

it says that 1/4 all babies are born with cords around their neck.

it also goes on to say that active cord mangement is not needed.

ds had it round his neck and was a grey-purple colour on delivery. Had heart decelerations in labour too. The first MW on shift was surprised I delivered naturally, be it with a ventouse. He has motor coordination issues , possibly dyspraxia, which may be related.

Two out of my three were born with cord round neck (the second was a home birth) and they have no problems whatsoever.

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 11/09/2007 09:16

both my ds and dd ad te cord roundtheir neck. dd waspurple andgreen but oter than that is perfecly fine. ds had been distressed as he pooed but again no ill effects so far. no ievention needed

(sory about typing my keyboard playing up!)

DS2 was born at home 6 weeks ago and cord was 3 times round his neck. Midwife felt it and as sh could not pul it over his head (what tehy usually do) he clamped and cut it before he was delivered. Took hime a couple f minutes to breath fekt like a lifetime0 but he was fine. Midwife told me that it is v common to have the cord round the neck. They canot tell until the baby is almost delivered so cannot amke a decision to ahve a c section but outcome is nearly always fine.

I am amazed that when there is so much information available regarding birth, so many mothers are surprised ,some even shocked when the baby's colour is initially blue/purple at delivery!

This is normal, with or without cord involvement.

ds2 born last week had the cord round his neck and up his back somehow, couldn't really tell as he was behind me, but the mw's didn't seem overly worried and just untangled him and then gave him to me. I wasn't on CFM but the two times they did monitor him for a while he was fine with no decels and he had apgars of 8 9 9 so I am assuming it did not present any significant danger, tho it is worrying to hear things like dyspraxia can be linked to this? ds1 had apgars of 1 1 9 for different reasons (got stuck) and is absolutely fine (tho very accident prone, hmmmm) so we felt like we'd got off lightly.

He did have very blue feet all last week which they said would be the case because of the cord round the neck.
