cord round neck?

meggles · 10/09/2007 19:21

what percentage of babies are born with cords around their neck? it's my understanding that this is a common occurance. and that the presence of it isn't a indiciation for c-section (without any other factors).

on other threads i hear statements like- "good thing they did a c-section, because the cord was wrapped around my babies' neck".

DD1 had cord round her neck, and her arm up round her head. Every time I pushed, her arm cut off the cord circulation. Luckily I knew nothing about it at the time, she was fine, delivered in a MW run hosp. Pretty sure DD2 had hers round her neck too>

Def not immediately a cs. Mind you they didn't know in advance with either of mine.

sugar34plum · 10/09/2007 19:25

my eldest son had the cord around his neck my 2nd ds had it wrapped around his body a few times and my 3rd ds had somehow managed to tie a knot in his! doc said he was very lucky. Yet all 3 of my girls were fine. Maybe they mistook it for williy's and started playing early!

If your worried about your baby ask for a scan close to delivery.

Gobbledigook · 10/09/2007 19:26

Ds2 had the cord around his neck. He was a week early and he was absolutely fine.

My friend lost her baby at 40 weeks and that was due to the cord being around the neck (if I remember correctly).

THe thing is, usually you don't know until the baby is delivered.

dd had cord around neck and her heart rate was decelerating, hence she was delivered ventouse and episiotomy, as soon as her head came out, the cord was undone and dd was fine.

Rhubarb · 10/09/2007 19:28

dd was born with the cord wrapped round her neck twice. Obv I didn't know this and I don't think the MWs were very prepared as they panicked and tried to cut the cord off, splattering themselves in the face with blood.

They had to give dd oxygen as she was very very blue, not sure if she was breathing or not at this point and dh had turned away in horror. But she's turned out fine.

Pollyanna · 10/09/2007 19:28

two of mine had the cord round their necks. with dd it was noticed as her head came out and they cut the cord there and then. ds was blue when he came out.

Jas · 10/09/2007 19:29

2 of my three did. DD2 was a crash cs but the cord round her neck was not a factor in it. DS had his round 3 times, and was a ventouse vbac.

colinandcaitlinsmommy · 10/09/2007 19:31

It is really common in my family. I came out with the cord tightly wrapped around my neck and blue, but was fine after a few minutes. One of my 2 sisters came out that way too with the same outcome. DD came out with it wound in a weird double-wrapped noose that was tightly wound and she managed to come out perfectly bright pink with no problems from it at all.

ds1 did, the m/w told me not to push on a contraction, stuck a couple of fingers up and looped it over his head

Rhubarb · 10/09/2007 19:35

I think then, judging by these stories, you need to rely on the experience of your midwives. Mine was pretty inexperienced and was meant to be supervised.

Surfermum · 10/09/2007 19:36

DD had it round her neck twice. Midwife just calmly took it off.

crokky · 10/09/2007 19:37

I think my DS had the cord around his neck. I had epis and forceps to get him out quickly.

If you are worried/about to give birth etc, you could opt for the continuous fetal monitoring (belts that they put on you). My DS was born early so I had the belts anyway and found them reassuring.

MaeWest · 10/09/2007 19:39

DS had the cord round his neck, MW noticed it as his head came out. She just told me to stop pushing and untangled him, he was fully born on the next push. Didn't get the impression that anyone was panicking...

missgriss · 10/09/2007 19:40

I think it is quite a common thing. Both of mine were born with the cord round the neck and I know quite a few friends who it has happended to as well

francagoestohollywood · 10/09/2007 19:42

ds had cord around his neck. His heartbeat went seriously down everytime I had a contraction. I had to lie on my left side during labour, I had an episiotomy and he was "squeezed out" as it was common practice in the Italian hospital 5 yrs ago. I don't think that scans usually can reveal whether baby has cord wrapped around his/her neck. I think that what can be dangerous is if they somehow manage to knot the cord.

pyjamagirl · 10/09/2007 19:44

my DD4 had her cord round her neck and noone realised til she was halfway out

she's ok though x

ThomasTankEngine · 10/09/2007 19:50

DS3 had cord around neck on delivery. No probs resulted.

NoNameToday · 10/09/2007 19:51

Oh for xray vision, no one can say if the cord is around the neck prior to delivery.

There are pointers which may indicate theat this is a possibility.

But no one can be sure until delivery of the head.

funnypeculiar · 10/09/2007 19:52

I believe it is pretty common. Ds had cord round neck and it wasn't spotted until he was born (although they had queried some decels earlier in labour.

(My mum lost a baby in labour due to cord round neck, but that was a long time ago/in days of ear-trumpet style monitoring )

lulumama · 10/09/2007 19:53

it is common

not always a problem

indicators of an issue with the cord could be the heartbeat dropping and not picking up quickly, or slow descent of teh baby

however, often babies can be born quite wrapped up and it is not an issue

juuule · 10/09/2007 22:07

One of my dds had a true knot in her cord. Found out after she was born so didn't cause any worry. Midwives had a good look and passed it around a bit. Luckily she had a strong cord which didn't pull tight.

seeker · 10/09/2007 22:12

I discovered ages later that dd had the cord round her neck. All I knew about it at the time was that the m/w told me not to push on one contraction. My dp told me that she cut the cord at that point, then dd was born on the next contraction. She was very blue - perfect apgar for everything except colour, but she pinked up almost immediatly without any intervervention. He fingers and toes were blue for a couple of hours though.

DD was a crash section due the cord being wrapped around her neck. I can't understand why they don't scan a baby who is two weeks late before inducing a first time mum who knows nothing about these things. It SHOULD have been a clam planned section... if only they had bothered to scan.

Crash sections are not fun. And I bet being strangled by the cord is not fun either.

FrannyandZooey · 10/09/2007 22:15

Ds had cord round neck and was back to back

ended up in rather botched forceps delivery
