Hi there,
I am 38 weeks today and planning a VBAC after my el CS for breech.

I haven't spent much time on the ante natal threads because I couldn't keep up with them! But now I am on mat leave and due date is approaching I would love to chat to anyone else hoping for a VBAC in the near future.

Is there anyone else out there, or another thread I can join? (Am just heading to docs to check baby position but will log in again later!)

Thanks
p xx

I hope it's not too late for me to join. Haven't read the whole thread yet but I am 31 weeks and hoping for a VBAC at the very beginning of December.

Lulumama · 06/10/2007 08:08

hi kitsilano

Kitsilano · 06/10/2007 13:40

Thanks lulumama. I last posted on this when I was about 9 weeks pregnant unsure as to what to do. I have since found a private midwife who has been very encouraging and was sort of planning a HBAC until this week when I had a major wobble about the risk involved and have decided that I will try to stay at home til I am in established labour and then tranfer to the hsopital. My last birth was similar to pendulum's experience this time - long pre-labour, 24 hour labour, (though with epidural that had to be resited several times and syntocin), hour or so of pushing, realisation that baby was OP and head at an angle, attempted ventouse twice and finally EMCS.

I hope to be a bit more in control of the way things progress this time - with the support of my midwife and would be delighted if I can acheive a VBAC.

Good luck to all and congrats to pendulum - hope you are making a good recovery.

canadianmum · 07/10/2007 13:15

Good luck kitsilano!!

Hope to hear the others' news soon......

BetsyBoop · 07/10/2007 15:39

Hi Kitsilano

good luck with your VBAC

Chirpyghoul · 08/10/2007 18:07

I did it, I did it!!

I was attached to CTG the whole way through as well, but to be honest, I couldn't have moved and been active if I had wanted to it all happened so fast and I forgot they were there after a bit. I managed to get onto hands and knees over the back of the bed for most of labour and gave birth sitting up with only gas and air.

AND I was the first person to pick up DD (MW had to steady her on bed) and I had skin to skin for an hour with her feeding for most of it until I got the shakes and had to give her to DH.

Something I hadn't considered through the whole VBAC thing was DH's reaction, he was brilliant throughout, he translated MW's instructions, helped me breathe and basically was totally involved. He was so happy to be able to help out and loved being able to see everything as opposed to being a spare part.

So Yay for us!

Chirpyghoul · 08/10/2007 18:08

And congrats pendulum!

BetsyBoop · 08/10/2007 18:13

well done & congrats Chirpy

Kitsilano · 08/10/2007 22:56

Congratulations!

bumpy06 · 09/10/2007 19:19

Fantastic. You definitely need to change back to chirpygirl again!

claraq · 10/10/2007 13:31

Kitsilano - what's your due date? I am also hoping for a VBAC at the beginning of Dec - my due date is 1/12.
My biggest worry at the moment though is that some people have warned off having an epidural while having a VBAC, in case it masks the pain of your scar rupturing. Tbh the fact that I still have the option of an epidural is the only thing which is helping me face having a natural birth this time (of course still hoping it will all be painless and easy and I won't need any drugs at all ). Anyone got any experience/opinions on this?

ejt1764 · 10/10/2007 14:31

Another successful vbac-er here!

My baby was born last Monday, 1st October - here's my birth story.

I have to say that it's been worth every bit of effort I put into getting my wishes listened to - my midwife has told me that she is "proud" of me!!

I honestly think that the biggest force in getting my wishes listened to was being referred to the comsultant midwife as once she had given me the green light, there was nobody who dared to argue!

BetsyBoop · 10/10/2007 18:31

just read your story

Well done you

congrats on your VBAC

BetsyBoop · 11/10/2007 13:54

Had my scan this morning to check on presentation

I'm pleased to say I was right all along, baby is HEAD DOWN

I'm measuring big on the growth scan

Head is on the 95th percentile & abdomen is just over - but it's spookily like DD's growth scan measurements.

Weight prediction at term is 9lb 10oz - and DD's was 9.5-10lbs (she was 8lb 8.5oz in the end)

I'm 5'11" & DH is 6'4", we were hardly going to have a 6lb baby were we....

So still all systems go for VBAC

FrankAwenstein · 11/10/2007 14:00

I was advised the other week to join this thread if that is ok

I am 28+3. Have 1ds delivered by emergency cs after 48 hour labour and stopped dilating at 5cm. Had Post partum haemmorrage and was in theater an extra hour. Ds was 8lb 12oz at 38 weeks. Also had Gestational Diabetes. Early placenta praveria but moved up.

Am carrying another boy, under consultant led care this time. Wanting VBAC and also active birth. Have been advised that they dont want me labouring for too long. The consultant is also wanting me to have 30 & 34 week scan to check growth and position of baby. They think I may have another big baby. I dont have gestational diabete again . They also think that I may go into labour before 38 weeks as ds was 38 weeks and spontanous. DP is in Japan from 34-36 weeks so chance he might miss it all.

Lulumama · 11/10/2007 14:18

hey betsey, that is great news, really pleased for you, and look forward to hearing about your VBAC , fingers crossed!

diddle · 11/10/2007 20:27

well i planned for a VBAC but it didn't quite happen as expected.

Had been in early slow labour since Monday 1st Oct, contractions got stronger and slightly more regular Thursday evening, after an examination that morning showed me to be 4cm.
Stayed at home as long as possible, but pain was getting worse around 9pm, so we made our way up to the maternity ward. When i was examined it showed that i was still 4cm i was not impressed. It also caused part of my waters to break.
The pain gradually increased with contractions coming every 5 mins. We were then moved to a private room and set up with some gas and air for when i needed it.

I tried it but it made me feel really panicy, a bit out of control, especially as i had been practising my normal breating, it felt odd using the mouthpiece.
As soon as i came off the monitor I paced around the room and bit and then stood in the shower as most of my pain was in my lower back, that really helped take my mind away from the pain.

I tried bouncing on the birthing ball too and this helped a little.

I was knackered after 3 nights of no sleep from early labour contractions i just wanted to close my eyes, but i couldn't lie on the bed, it hurt too much to be lying down. I discussed pethidine with the midwife. Knowing that it could cause the baby to be drowsy had put me off, but i also knew it would make me drowsy, so i checked whether she thought having it at that early stage would be best, to help me sleep and be far away enough from labour to not effect the baby too much when it mattered. She agreed, so i had a shot of that.
It worked, after making me throw up, it sent me to sleep. I slept for an hour, waking up at 6am. I got up to the toilet, lay back down on the bed, and had the biggest shock of my life. my waters suddenley broke, water everywhere.

Then it really started, contractions every 3 mins. I was put back on the monitor and left bouncing on my ball. i managed to breath, chant and moan through the pain, while the midwives handed over.

When my new midwife arrived she checked the monitor and it wasn't picking up babies heartate clearly, they thought maybe the strap had slipped and it was picking up mine instead.
So i had to go back on the bed, which i was very annoyed with as it killed my back to labour on there. I grabbed the gas and air and was told by the midwife that, its no wonder ithadn't worked before i wasn't breathing into it correctly. so once i had a little lesson i used it successfully and effectively. The monitor still wasn't picking up the heartrate well though. With every contraction the baby's heart rate would drop and take a while to recover.

I was examined and had got to 7cm not bad for a couple of hours.

After consulting with 4 doctors, they decided that the baby's rate was not recovering quickly enough and that they needed to get him out. So i was whisked off for an emergency section
i was gutted, but far too worried about the baby to care too much. They agreed i could stay awake and wouldn't need a general anesthetic.

When they got to our baby he had got the cord wrapped round his chest and neck, he needed a little oxygen to bring him round and has been fine ever since.

He was born Friday morning at 9.16am

I am very proud of myself that i got to 7cm and experienced labour at some degree. The main thing is that our son is ok.

Good luck to all you VBacers our there, i hope you get what you want. but if it ends early then don't be dissapointed.

Lulumama · 11/10/2007 20:29

congratulations diddle, on the safe arrival of your darling boy

and very well done for giving it your all. sounds like you laboured brilliantly

was baby OP? that might have been why painful back and slower dilation

glad that you are feeling ok about it xxxxxxxxx

jamila169 · 11/10/2007 21:38

Go betty!! I told you your instincts were right didn't I?
Lisa X

BetsyBoop · 11/10/2007 21:58

well done Diddle & congrats on the safe arrival of your son - sounds like he had no intention of coming down the "natural runway"

I think all any of us want is a decent shot at it, and if it doesn't work then so long as we have given it our best shot then so be it.

It's great you are so positive about the experience, despite the final delivery not being quite as planned.

ejt1764 · 12/10/2007 13:34

Congratulations diddle ... the main thing is that you and your baby are safe and well ... you know you gave it your best shot - as I knew last week ... if I'd ended up with another CS, then I would have been ok with it, as I knew that it obviously wasn't meant to be!

Enjoy your baby!

FrankAwenStein - Good luck with planning your VBAC ... I'm sure that others will be along to say it much more succinctly then me, but it is not up to the medics how and where you labour: protocol dictated that I should labour in the Consultant-led unit, hooked up to a monitor: I actually laboured (and delivered) in the Midwife-led unit, in the water, with normal MLU protocols (ie heartbeat of baby checked with a hand-held sonicaid).

The only way I got that was to be quite forceful about my wishes ... and to get myself referred to the consultant midwife for the Trust ... there should be one linked to your maternity services - their job is to aim for normality for as many women as possible: the medical evidence strongly suggests that women who feel like they have had their wishes listened to labour better and have fewer interventions!

This is a very interesting article about why not more vbacers manage to do it ...

Betsy - great news about your scan!

pendulum · 12/10/2007 14:42

Hi Diddle- congratulations on the arrival of your son.

I also had an unsuccessful VBAC attempt a couple of weeks ago, for similar reasons to yours I suspect (long pre-labour, poor positioning.) I'm rubbish at links but you can read my story in Birth Announcements (My VBAC attempt..."

I hope that, like me, you can view your labour as a positive experience.

Congratulations chirpy and ejt!!!

Diddle - great to hear your story, sorry you didn't get the full VBAC experience but sounds like the right decisions were made. Most importantly your lo is fine .

pendulum - haven't had a chance to read your birth story yet but congratulations!

Frank - good luck, hope you get the birth experience you want.....

Klaw · 12/10/2007 22:40

Go Betsy, go Betsy, go Betsy!

Diddle, I'm sorry you did not get your VBAC but I'm glad that you got to experience labour and baby chose his own birth date! Make sure that you are getting pampered and spoiled!

Hello Frank, good luck with your VBAC plans! Definitely have a look at Ejt's link to "VBAC: on whose Terms?" as it doesn't matter how long 'They' want you to labour for! It's up to you and how your labour is progressing. You can't conform to timetables.

Claraq, what have you done about planning pain relief? Have you researched your options? Why not read Dr Sarah Buckley's article on Labour Hormones to help you understand what's going to happen. It might help you to believe in yourself and realise that you might just cope without an epidural. Do plenty or reading and research and KNOW that you can do this!

Hello Kitsilano!

Elasticbandstand · 12/10/2007 22:45

i never knew about a problem with VBAC when my third was due , was told would be ok, until i went into labour and was suddenly presented with the scenario that it might not be possible!

t'was ok in the end.
and in fact the only truely natural birth i had, the first being induction and forceps,
