Is propess pessary meant to be this painful?

AllThatJazz92 · 03/02/2020 14:16

Had pessary inserted at 9am and have very bad period pains at the moment. Have walked around lots to try and relieve the pain but finding it very hard. Can I request pain relief? Finding it difficult to manage at the moment

I had to press my buzzer 3-4 times before they took me seriously. I had a lot of 'we won't give you any pain relief yet because it'll get worse than this'. I could tell they all thought I was being a big coward. It was only when I rang the buzzer and bellowed "I need to PUSH" that they took me seriously, examined me and whisked me to the labour ward. I nearly had my baby in the corridor on the way - I wish I'd insisted on an internal examination earlier, but I just thought I must've had a low pain threshold!

Insist on being examined right now.

No I've asked for the pethidine since about 3pm and they have basically said that I need to keep walking, bouncing, showers. I've been given paracetamol twice, once at 1PM and then 45 minutes ago. When you say "checked" do you mean check if I am dilated is it? Sorry first time for me

Yes please ask them to check if you’re dilated. It sounds like you’re in labour. Have you got your partner with you to help advocate on your behalf if necessary?

RandomMess · 03/02/2020 20:02

Yes to check your bishops score and whether you have dilated.

Unfortunately this stage can last a long time and it does hurt!!! Once you get to 2-3 centimetres dilated they will consider you in labour.

I never had a show and my waters only ever broke at end or when they broke them
When I finally got to 3cm dilated...

bumpyknuckles · 03/02/2020 20:03

Yes - an internal to see how dilated you are.

I had no show and they broke my waters for me, seconds before my baby was born.

Narcheska · 03/02/2020 20:03

Yes they should do an internal examination to check if your dilated at all. It sounds like you're in labour. Push as hard as you can to be checked

Mamabear2020 · 03/02/2020 20:04

@allthatjazz92 I would ask for an internal check - yes it's to see if you are dilated.
I had propess with my first baby and I gave birth within 15 hours. I think 24 hrs is the maximum they can leave it in, not a target!

Also, I never had a show, and my waters had to be broken before I started pushing as they didnt go on their own. They were literally broken by a midwife 40 minutes before he arrived.

FaithInfinity · 03/02/2020 20:04

I had this. Waters broke at 6.30pm. Had my pessary at 5.30am because I was in early but not established labour. Sudden onset of awful pains and cramps. They gave me paracetamol and dihydrocodeine because they thought I was in spasm. 7am I said I needed to push...they said it was far too early. I insisted I needed to push. They checked me and I was fully dilated! DD was born at 7.22am. I would ask to be examined. Good luck!

MummyGoingItAlone · 03/02/2020 20:05

Definitely ask for an examination. I had a propess induction and it was very painful. Turned out my baby was back to back but they really didn’t take me seriously, just kept saying have a bath, walk around etc. Soon as a new midwife came on the ward about 12 hours later, she examined me and said I was a good 4 cm but she could feel baby was back to back so she gave me pethidine and sent me to labour ward. It’s really frustrating when your pain isn’t taken seriously. I hope you get some help soon x

ballsdeep · 03/02/2020 20:05

Yes an internal and also pop you on the monitors regularly to see if and how far apart your contractions are

EvilHerbivore · 03/02/2020 20:08

Another one saying that's it's UP TO 24 hours - I was induced with DS1 and had the pessary at 9am and started with 'period pain, things got really moving at 9pm and he was born at 1.30am

RandomMess · 03/02/2020 20:08

Have they listened in to baby's heartbeat?

Primrose89 · 03/02/2020 20:11

Are you being monitored? I was overstimulated and had 7-8 contractions per minute and they had to remove it within 3 hours and give me 2 injections to counteract it! Too many contractions can stress the baby so definitely get them to check you! I was only 2cm dilated but they broke my waters eventually and baby arrived within 1.5 hours

Wavingwhiledrowning · 03/02/2020 20:15

If things are feeling very uncomfortable, insist to be examined. I've been induced three times. With DC2 I suffered through ridiculous pain after the pessary because I expected it to follow the pattern of DC1 (long and painful, by the book). It couldn't have been more different. I went for a bath because I literally didn't know what else to do with myself and very nearly gave birth there and then (pessary to birth was 7 hrs. Labour was 4 mins).
However with DC3 I had crazy contractions with the pessary and then... Nothing. It all just stopped. So frustrating.
You are the very best judge of your body and pain so do what you feel you need to do. Don't feel embarrassed for saying anything - if you've posted on here then you're clearly worried.

Sexnotgender · 03/02/2020 20:41

Your waters not having gone is no indication how far along you are. I asked the midwife to break my waters when I was fully dilated and ready to push.

Legoandloldolls · 03/02/2020 20:49

With my first baby I was induced. I went for a walk with mild back pain. 30 mins later I was in agony. Beeped midwife who want to hook me up to monitor, she came wit it, i said i needed to throw up, she came back with a bowl, and I was holding my breath during the pain. She said i think you want to push? Examined me and I was 9 cm. First stage of Labour was 1 hour!

SockQueen · 03/02/2020 21:41

With DS1 it was less than 12 hours from propess to delivery. Like several others on this thread, I was hyperstimulated and contracting 7 times in 10 minutes pretty much from the start. After about 6 hours of this I started feeling really unwell and vomited, and felt like I was struggling to manage the pain, so buzzed for the midwife, she examined me and I was 6-7cm@), so off I went to labour ward!

AllThatJazz92 · 04/02/2020 02:05

Hi all, so just after I posted at 8pm, I was getting a bad contraction pain and accidentally kicked my 2l bottle of water off the bed. I was asked to move off the bed to a nearby chair as they cleaned up so I got up hunched over in a lot of pain and tried to walk a few steps and my waters just gushed everywhere. Went for a quick shower as I was saturated. There was meconium in the waters and I've been moved to labour ward since 9ish and now on gas and air and have the drip also. Only 1cm dilated at last check. Contractions have gotten stronger since the drip so I've requesting an epidural and just waiting on it at the moment. Thank you all for your insight and advice. It's not nice to feel as though your pains are being dismissed when you are in a very legitimate amount of pain

Bluebelltulip · 04/02/2020 03:01

I hope you now have the epidural and as odd as it seems try to get some sleep.

Sexnotgender · 04/02/2020 07:39

I wouldn’t have the drip without an epidural! Hope it’s going well Flowers

TankGirl97 · 04/02/2020 10:43

Hope it's all going well op Flowers

SproutMuncher · 05/02/2020 15:53

Hope it’s all going well and you got your epidural OP. I found the pessary really painful too so I sympathise Flowers
