How long did you stay in hosp with elective caesarean

I have mine this week and I keep hearing its one night. With my emcs I was in for 5 days but appreciate its a longer recovery. That said one night sounds too little when I will be coming home to a boisterous two year old. Midwife today at preop group meeting was adament we would all leave after 24 hours 😬

At the pre op appointment the midwife said if we had it done in the morning or lunchtime we could go home the following morning or lunchtime...

I had a very straight forward c section on Tuesday, lost less than average amount of blood, numbness wore off and catheter was out the next day and I was up and walking about, albeit a bit sore!

I was still there for 3 nights, but I was thankful for it as they kept coming around with the stronger pain killers which were bliss!

Be prepared for 3 nights, that seemed to be fairly normal at my hospital.

Chocolateandchats · 06/01/2020 19:03

4 nights 6 years ago and 5 nights 15 years ago. I think 24 hours is very soon. Will you have help OP? Good luck.

userabcname · 06/01/2020 19:07

I had my elcs 12 weeks ago. My baby was born at midday on the Monday and I was home Tuesday evening. I had a 2.5 year old at home too. It was honestly fine. I think if you ask to take Oramorph though you have to stay in longer, or as long as its in your system (I think - I may be mistaken as I didn't end up needing it anyway).

SinkGirl · 06/01/2020 19:09

It’s usually 24-48 hours if no complications. I was in about 36 hours (c section Friday night, home Sunday lunchtime) - this was an Emcs but no labour beforehand. I probably could have gone sooner but my twins were in nicu so there was no urgency to get me home with them still there.

aNonnyMouse1511 · 06/01/2020 19:11

One night. My mum kept the 2 year old for an extra night to let us settle in with the newborn.

Sleepycat91 · 06/01/2020 19:13

I made friends with someone on the ward to had an emergency c sec and they said she could go home after 1 night but she said she was a bit worried and struggling with pain still and would rather stay in another night and the hospital had no problem with that

cockcrowfarm · 06/01/2020 19:14

I stayed in for one night. With retrospect I should have stayed longer but it felt like a long time and I wanted to go home.

AloneLonelyLoner · 06/01/2020 19:15

My last one 4 years ago was 4 nights which I needed. I think 1 night is budget concerns as a bed is over £500 per night. It's a shame as (although hospital can be crappy) you may need more support and rest and it's often hard to get that at home with older children.

Good luck!

MuchTooTired · 06/01/2020 19:18

I had mine in 2018, and was in for 2 nights afterwards. Afternoon section, think we were kept in for slightly longer as my DTs needed their blood sugars monitored due to being slightly prem, and I had severe pe.

Littlebelina · 06/01/2020 19:18

2 nights, was itching to leave earlier but probably was right decision

Goldwispa · 06/01/2020 19:19

Went in for elective on a Friday morning, left at 4pm on the Saturday

LauraPalmersBodybag · 06/01/2020 19:20

5 nights first time, 2 the second. The baby may decide for you op. Dc1 was jaundiced and needed treatment. Good luck!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 06/01/2020 19:22

I've had two emergency sections. First one I stayed 3 nights because they wouldn't discharge me until dc1 could come out of NICU and my second, I only stayed one night. Our hospital is very keen on sending electives home after the first night unless there is a medical reason to keep you. I would ask if you are concerned if you can stay longer.

My recoveries were very easy with both so I definitely didn't need the bed beyond one night but I'm a bit weird as it just didn't hurt. Apparently getting out fast is linked to lower infection rates.

elliejjtiny · 06/01/2020 19:23

I stayed in 3 nights with my elcs. In my hospital it's 48 hours for a first c-section and 24 hours for a subsequent c-section of no complications. They let me stay an extra night because baby was in nicu.

holdthefrontpage · 06/01/2020 19:24

They offered to let me out 24 hours later, but that would only have been with paracetamol/ibuprofen and they wouldn't prescribe the oramorph to take home.

I still needed the oramorph at that time so stayed in an extra day.

Slight internal rant about new post-surgery mothers not the most likely to be hawking drugs on the street whilst lactating. The lack of trust irritated me.

5BlueHydrangea · 06/01/2020 19:24

I was told it's 48 hours. Had dd Thursday afternoon, went home Sat lunchtime so pretty much 45 hours. Felt about right. 24 hours seems a bit quick in my opinion.

Babypug · 06/01/2020 19:29

Had an emergency sections september 2017, and elective section may 2019 and was only in 1 night. I was convinced I'd be in longer following the first experience but it was a completely different experience and came home to an 20 month old running riot. Gotta day I would have hated to be away any longer, nice to get back to normality and helped me recover quicker too.

Racheyg · 06/01/2020 19:31

Just under 24 hours. I was desperate to leave. It was too noisy and hot on the ward and all the other patients were ordering take aways. It stank 😂

Racheyg · 06/01/2020 19:32

Should say my second c-section. The first was an emcs

Thescrewinthetuna · 06/01/2020 19:35

With both mine (one EMCS and one ELCS) I was in for just under 48hrs. I would have left as soon as I was up walking (approx 9hrs after first and 14 after second) if they’d have let me

PenelopePeachStone · 06/01/2020 19:35

I was out the next day .... I hate hospitals and was in for the week prior after a failed induction.... Hospital is horrible they couldn't have paid me to stay there Smile

custardbear · 06/01/2020 19:35

5 days with both mine, one emergency the other not. Would have gone the next day with non emergency but he developed jaundice so consultant kept us both in
Good luck

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 06/01/2020 19:42

OK, so very very varied. The Midwife was so abrupt about it today it made me feel like we are being kicked out. She said 'that's what partners are for'. Totally get they need the beds but I also don't want to go home to end up back in because my stitches have gone or something was missed in the 12hours or so after surgery. I guess I'm tainted by my my emcs experience

24 hrs with DS1. With DS2 I asked to transfer to a local midwife led centre the morning after he was born so I could spend some time with new baby and get some rest before going home to a demanding toddler. Stayed 3 nights there, physically I could have gone home sooner but it was so nice to bond with DS2 and control visitors for a while

RC10 · 06/01/2020 20:04

DS was born at 3pm on the Wednesday and we left hospital at 10am on the Friday
