Hi all,

So something that actually pissed me off today ! Me and hubby went round to see the mother and father in law. I’m currently 30 weeks so the topic of discussion was all about baby. Then my mother in law comes out with I think because your small you will have to have a c section! I just replied well my nan did it 4 time, my mother did it 5 times and my two sisters have done it once. She said what c sections! I said no natural births !!! Urhhh !!! I’m still angry now. All women in my family are 5’2 and under and they have been fine. I get yes I may have to have a c section but it’s the whole because your small thing that gets me.

Any other shorties out there who have given birth no problems? And what were your babies weights ?

Thanks xxxx

I’m 5’. Two home births (first unplanned!) - both under 4 hours start to finish. No pain relief (and no need for). No tearing - and honestly don’t understand what all the fuss is about.

DC1 was a month early and was over 5lb 2oz. DC2 was on time and was 7lb 2oz.

I was also told by some I would definitely have to have a c-section given my size (though not by anyone medically qualified!).

Good luck - don’t worry about the birth - just the next 18 years!!

BusySittingDown · 06/10/2019 20:47

I'm tiny, 5'3 and hover between 7.5-8 stone.

DD1 was 8lbs7.5 and 57cms. DD2 was 8lbs3.5 and 54cms. Both vaginal deliveries!

nuggles · 06/10/2019 22:27

I'm 5ft and usually a size 6/8.

Have had two vaginal births and expecting the same with 3rd this week.

I got told the same from my ils, just ignore them although I know it's frustrating. Our bodies are amazing made :)

CmdrCressidaDuck · 06/10/2019 22:29

5'2" and size 6. Two full term babies. Completely uncomplicated vaginal births and I didn't tear either time. Baby one was just short of 8lb.

She's talking bollocks basically.

annlee3817 · 07/10/2019 03:20

5ft 1, size 8, didn't have a c section and all was fine

Ornery · 07/10/2019 03:36

5’2” one CS (macrosomia) - she was scanning at 9lb6oz and they said she could be a pound heavier (she was a pound lighter). Two vbac (8lb7oz and just over 9lb). I’m shit at childbirth though and not allowed to vb any more. (One back to back almost emcs and one brain damaged baby). The size wasn’t the issue though.

dotty12345 · 07/10/2019 03:50

5ft, 3 vaginal births 5lb 2 (6weeks early) 6lb and 7lb 6 (2weeks early) No tears, no stitches.

HirplesWithHaggis · 07/10/2019 04:03

Five feet tall, weighed about 7.5 stone when I conceived, shoe size 2.5/3 (do they still ask that?). Both dc at least 42+, dc1 bang on average at 7lb 12, dc2 8lb 3. Dc1 needed episitomy and forceps, dc2 needed neither though it was a close call and I had fantastic support from an Australian trainee midwife. (The things you remember so many years later...)

I also have two shortarse sisters. One has three dc, all CS, her first was "trial by labour" and consequent emergency CS, subsequent dc elective. Other sister has five, no CS, no major issues though tbf she's the tallest at 5'4.

PixieDustt · 07/10/2019 06:54

5'2
DS vaginal delivery with no interventions. 7lb 2oz ☺️

Marmite27 · 07/10/2019 06:58

5’2”. DC1, normal birth 6lb 13oz at 38+2. I had cold and burst my warrens coughing.

DC2 6lb 11oz at 35+1. She was a section, because she was sick, not because I’m short!

angelopal · 07/10/2019 07:05

Just under 5ft and had a 9lber with no problems. 8hr labour with gas and air. Had tearing but no worse than with my 5lb baby.

katmarie · 07/10/2019 07:21

5ft 2 and delivered an 8lb 5oz with just a small cut and 3 stitches. I'm due next week with DC number 2 and it's been measured as likely to be over 8lb again, and midwives are quite happy for me to deliver naturally. It's nothing to do with your size, whether you can get the baby out or not.

Beckyboo123 · 07/10/2019 07:23

I am 4ft11, DS1 7.6lb vaginal birth but did tear and recovery was very long (1 day early)
DS2 8.11lb (5days early) emergency c-section as he went back to back and got stuck, tried for such a long time to get him out but he was really stuck, I probably would have died had a carried on. Having said that recovery has been better this time, I do still have a few issues but I felt more able sooner than the first time, maybe just because my pain was managed better. My DS2 is 9 weeks old.

ameliathomas84 · 07/10/2019 09:34

To be fair my sil is 5" and brother 6"5 I honestly thought she would have to as she's tiny! Not just in height! However she delivered just fine 7-12, however she didn't take offence by it caus does it really matter?
Just laugh them off and say well we will see!
Everyone has an opinion when your pregnant (rightly or wrongly) about everything and anything , take my with a punch of salt don't let it get to you!

ShippingNews · 07/10/2019 13:48

When you think of all the countries where the women are normally very tiny - they don't all have c sections. You'll be fine - your height has nothing to do with your ability to have a baby naturally. Your ILs know nothing.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 07/10/2019 13:51

5’2”, dress size 8. Four vaginal deliveries, first one ventouse due to OP position. Babies weighed 8lbs 1, 6lbs 15, 8lbs 1 and 8lbs 4.

My friend who is a fair bit taller and dress size 14-16 had a 5lb baby at term. Figure that one out!

RandomMess · 07/10/2019 16:13

5' on a tall day, size 6-8 hips DC1 7lb 6oz, DC2 10lb 6oz.... no stitches or tears!

Cookit · 07/10/2019 17:40

This would make no sense really. How tall are you? It’s not remotely unusual for a woman to be 5’0 up etc. People were shorter historically too. Most women can give birth vaginally and have done throughout history.
I think that sometimes the pelvis size and shape can hamper your chances but often that will not be because of being short it will be because the pelvis is not in its natural shape eg from specific dance training from an early age (I know someone who had this issue) or because of food deficiencies and things so not really an issue nowadays.

Most C sections won’t be done because the woman can’t give birth vaginally. I came very close to one last time and it was because it all went a bit too fast and the baby got distressed, so they wanted her out immediately. Other women I know who have had them or come close etc - because of breech baby, because of age, because of placenta issues, because of induction and body not favourable to going into labour at that time...

turnthebiglightoff · 07/10/2019 17:49

5 foot 2 here. Natural (ish - forceps) birth. She's talking out of her arse. Good luck :-)

MeredithGrey1 · 08/10/2019 05:48

5'3, just under 7 stone when I conceived and had a home birth. Baby was healthy and 7.5lbs

EscapeTheOrdinary · 08/10/2019 09:01

5ft2 size 8 pre pregnancy. Gave birth with vontouse due to exhaustion to a 7lb baby. Unless it's a medical professional saying it I would recommend ignoring it. I had lots of people telling me how my bump was all baby and he would be closer to 9lb Hmm

Whitecandle · 08/10/2019 09:15

I'm 5'2 and size 6/8, 8 stone 3lb pre baby.

Vaginal delivery 9 months ago, 5lb 15oz baby. No tearing etc, no assisted delivery.

Was 'back to normal' downstairs after about 2 weeks. And back to 8stone 1lb now 😊

People chat shit x

Wherearemyminions · 08/10/2019 09:27

5'2, 4 babies, all vaginally, 2 were early so around the 4lb mark, first baby was 7lb 10, and last was 7lb 5, size 8-10 for all babies. An elderly relative told me that foot size was a good indicator of pelvic width, ie small feet, higher chance of section. I think this is bollocks tbh, I'm a size 5 so average but my Mum was a 4 (and just over 5') and had 3 babies vaginally, my aunt is a size 3 (4' 11")and had no problems with having her son.
The worst comment I had about being so petite (all over) was ex MIL who told me that I was cruel to breastfeed as my baby would starve as I had no boobs. Hurt at the time but sad that she had so little idea about how it works looking back. That baby was ebf and is now 6' and built like the proverbial outhouse :)

Gretais · 08/10/2019 11:21

5 ft 2 or 3 isn't that small i didnt think?

RancidOldMeatbag · 08/10/2019 11:23

I am 5ft 3, had 3 vaginal births, first two were 8lb 10, third was 9lb. No problems
