hi. iv just been to see consultant and asked about me wanting a c section on ground of traumatic birth last time. he agreed. but i have to come back to hospital in 3 weeks for yet another growth scan as my baby is measuring too big.when i come then he says i will be given my date for c section. i am 34 weeks now so that will take me to 37 weeks. is it normal to wait that long. and anyone knows what happens from then on

That is grwat news Hayley - so glad it went well. I took a list of requests to the appointment at 36 weeks and they were really good about it all. things like wanting to bring my own cd for them to play (nothing cheesy, just didn't want someone elses favorite tune playing which I might hate!) I also asked about them leaving one of my arms reasonably free so that i could touch the baby while in theatre (hated this with the crash section - couldn't touch her as my arms were below the sheet). Have a ponder about what you would like before you go back. The beauty of an elective is there is no mad panic so things are calm and they can take into account some of your wishes.
I agree with Lucewheel, after a traumatic first delivery an elective is bliss!

RedFraggle · 09/08/2007 11:56

Hayley - take big pants! snacks for in the hospital, magazines for the wait and for afterwards. All the baby accoutrements - nappies, baby gros, blanket etc. A gazillion sanitary towels, nighties etc

I can't remember what I took and it was only 2 months ago!!

hayley2u · 09/08/2007 11:57

thanks can just get excite about meeting her now. i'll have to think about what cd to use.

Take your mobile phone and charger so you make calls without using that stupid extortionist patient line system. Some hospitals allow mobile phones. I was in Queen Charlotte and they said go on, there are no restrictions on mobile phone use.

ARNICA ARNICA ARNICA get the strong stuff and eat loads of it.

hayley2u · 09/08/2007 13:20

sorry if being thick but what is arnica

It's a natural aid to help bruising. Lots of people use it for c-section recovery and swear by it -- I'm one of them.

Will go look for link for you now....

MrsPuddleduck · 09/08/2007 13:23

Hayley2u - I had a c section second time around for the same reasons (I ended up having emergency c section first time around).

I was booked for my c section at about 36/37 weeks but didn't have it until 39 weeks - they book them in advance so they get the theatre space. I also saw my consultant again between booking and having the c section.

You also have to go up to the hospital about a week before and they do all these pre-operation tests (weight, blood type etc) and they go through eveything with you.

Don't worry too much about going into labour early. I was told that if I had the slightest hint of labour to phone the maternity ward and they check you out and if need be they do the c section early if it looks like you are going into labour.

Don't forget to ask who will do the op - my actual consutlant did it for me.

Be prepared for an early start - I had to be at the hospital for 8.00am - I think if you are booked in you go down first.

Hope it helps. I was trying to think of the things which worried me about having a planned section

hayley - i had dd by elective section as ds birth was horrific. they booked the section for 39 weeks exactly and wouldn't do it any earlier, even tho i asked because ds was born at 38 weeks and i really didn't want to go into labour. but it was all fine and she was born at 39 weeks by elec cs. they also reassured me that they if i had gone into labour earlier they would have done the section when i got to the hospital. you'd have to be at the pushing stage when you arrived at the hospital for them to make you deliver vaginally.

sambuca - i also had anti-e anti bodies which were from blood transfusion after having ds, only had a c-section because of traumatic previous birth tho - they would have been happy for me to deliver vaginally. so you might not have to have a cs if you don't want one

ginnypotter · 10/08/2007 19:52

oh and you can order arnica from holand and barrett (they have to order in the super strenght version!)

ScottishMummy · 10/08/2007 20:00

Good luck with your c-section, anytime from 39+ wks is normal protocol
take some
books/mags to read
ipod/music
mobile phone

to pass time as emergency c will get priority, so u might hang about

Flibbertyjibbet · 10/08/2007 20:15

My section was planned for a monday (my due date) after discovering baby was large and breech (not small and head not engaged, they had been feeling his bottom .
This was on the friday before my due date. I was told that as I was down for elective section, should I go into labour over the weekend I should phone hosp and turn up after basically one contraction, and they would be ready in theatre for me by the time I got there.
So presumably if your consultant has agreed to e-c-s that would be the case if you went into labour.

mozzybear · 10/08/2007 20:31

I had a list of complications as long as my arm (high bp, ++protein, extra fluid, breech baby etc) Was told I would probably be induced at 37 weeks, but that was before high protien and discovery of extra fluid round baby.

At 37+1 I went to see consultant. By lunchtime the next day I was looking at my DS

I was told that I could be given injections to help baby's lungs if he needed to be born early but they would like to wait till 37weeks.

Hope everything goes well for you hayley2u xx

hayley2u · 11/08/2007 11:52

thanks. yer i understand baby needs to be at least 39 weeksjust worried as he would not actually book me in thats al so scared people will try change my mind. he said if i still feel i want a c section then they will book it when i come in for a scan at 37 1/2 weeks.
having gluclose toleranc test on monday so which i' not looking forward to it. heard the stuff they give you is gross. plus we got to fast from 9 the sunday night, oh dear. any way will try mention it to doctor as well to re asure that i wil be booked in

"heard the stuff they give you is gross."

At St Mary's they gave me a brand new bottle of Lucozade. Unfortuately I think Lucozade is gross and was very very morning sicky at the time, so I struggled to drink it as quickly as I had to and to keep it down. But I think it's probably not so bad at all for people less whiny and spoiled than me.

Riss70 · 11/08/2007 12:07

I have had three children and the last two were by 'elective' c sections (almost lost DS1 during natural and ended up very ripped/torn with over 60 stiches.)

DD was done at 38 weeks and DS2 at 39 weeks. Had a spinal block with both and all went very well

Turned out that it was a wise choice for DD as she had tied a 'true knot' in the umbilical cord (not sure what the true part means by ob/gyn said it was quite rare and the chances of having serious complications should she have tried entry through the birth canal were very likely)

I was up and about that afternoon with both and standing straight that day - people often tell you horror stories but it wasn't bad at all - I was in better condition than after the natural delivery.

One complication - doctor was handed the wrong sutures after DS2 and I still have them inside (DS2 is 4 now) but it doesn't give me any trouble and if it ever does than I shall get them excised.

good luck and I hope you and the new bub go well
