How do I stop labor?

DH has the flu, I'm coming down with it, I'm 39+3 and I've got mild surges coming ten minutes or so apart.

I'd really rather put the whole thing off until we're feeling better. Suggestions?

Morning! I'm not sure you can stop it if it's the real thing, just take it easy and hope that you're just having a practice run. I'm 37+5 2nd pregnancy and have been having 10 minute apart "twinges" every night for about a week now so doesn't mean it's going to happen straight away. If you do go on to have baby soon you may find DH suddenly gets better and your body will have other things to think about so the flu may not develop. Good luck!!

ChubbyScotsBurd · 23/07/2007 06:00

Here's the big question - does your DH have the 'flu, or is it man 'flu? If it's man 'flu then I'm sure you'll be just fine, if it's not then at least they have good drugs in hospital

I've never yet seen a thread about putting labour off - something different indeed! I hope you feel better soon and baby picks an optimal moment to arrive, all the best.

PrettyCandles · 23/07/2007 06:12

If it's actually statredm then I dson't believe it's possible to stop it. But, as BW says, it could still be days befoe anything really happens. Whyt not try a long, deep, warm (body-temp) bath? After all, you're not supposd to get into a birthing pool until a certainstage in labour, in case it stops everything. You could try visualising labour stopping, and wanting it to stop very much (that may sometimes delay labour starting, though I don't know if it can stop it) but that may be a little dangerous, as, if you do go into proper labour, you need to be in the right frame of mind to work positively with your body.

Take some paracetamol - not for the labour, but for the flu, so that yo feel a bit better.

DivaSkyChick · 23/07/2007 08:23

Thanks for the advice. I'm well and truly into it now, tho. Am throwing up with rather painful contractions now. So much for the paracetomal I just took. oh and the oatmeal I ate. (tmi!)

DH woke up feeling a lot better and he's being a star right now. This is a home birth but I'm thinking omg if this is the early stages how on EARTH will I cope???

ugh.

I've got some vague memory from biology lessons that you can't stop it when it starts - its some cycle of hormones, one being released causes the contractions, which causes more/something different to be released and it all carries on making it stronger each time.

DivaSkyChick · 23/07/2007 08:31

woweeeeee ouch.

Llewsmum · 23/07/2007 08:42

Have you tried a warm bath? Good luck - I'm sure you'll be fine

Llewsmum · 23/07/2007 08:42

Have you called the MW?

lulumama · 23/07/2007 08:48

you can't stop it ! call a friend for labour support

call teh MW too

sip water or raspberry leaf tea with honey to replace the fluids you are losing

vomiting and retching can help you dilate

take it as it comes, go with the flow and concentrate on your needs

DivaSkyChick · 23/07/2007 08:49

Called the midwives - they don't get in for a bit, didn't bother paging them bc it's such early days. My doula lives nearby so she's going to drop by for a bit.

I really feel great in between surges - except for the panicky feeling about the next one. I am supposed to be meditating or something - I am a hypnobirther! I'll get it together.

OH HERE IT COMES AGAIN

OP posts:
DivaSkyChick · 23/07/2007 08:50

oh yay! lulumama! Soooo happy to see you here!

OP posts:
Llewsmum · 23/07/2007 08:53

Just take it easy & don't panic, try to relax as much as you can and keep moving

lulumama · 23/07/2007 08:54

try to meet each one like a wave..if you stand firm, it cant knock you down

if you need to get in your hypnobirth zone, go for it xx

DivaSkyChick · 23/07/2007 08:54

I took a couple of paracetamal about two minutes before throwing up. Can I take two more? Have no idea if they came up or not...

What about sending DH out for some ginger biscuits/tea?

DivaSkyChick · 23/07/2007 08:56

Ohhh he can make me some fresh ginger tea... I mean, we have fresh ginger... how do you make fresh ginger tea?

OP posts:
eleusis · 23/07/2007 08:59

No idea. I think I'd cut up the ginger into chumnks, and drop it in boiling water. Then add a bit of sugar or honey. Might help curb the vomitting.

eleusis · 23/07/2007 08:59

I can't believe I'm giving advice on a homebirth thread instead of working.

Good luck!

Jojay · 23/07/2007 09:02

Good Luck Diva!!!

You'll meet your little angel very soon!!

NorbertStanleyFletcher · 23/07/2007 09:04

Oh - good luck.

And don't worry - I have a friend who had flu when she gave birth and she said she completely forgot that she was ill during labour, and felt much better straight afterwards

EffiePerine · 23/07/2007 09:07

Best of luck

DivaSkyChick · 23/07/2007 09:26

Thanks!

Okay, surges coming three minutes apart but lasting only 30+ seconds...

OP posts:
Llewsmum · 23/07/2007 09:55

Mine were like that - hope you're coping well - is the doula on her way?

PrettyCandles · 23/07/2007 10:10

Oh I'm so glad you're getting into it! You'll cope, you'll see. Do't worry about keeping us posted here on MN - go into your zone and concentrate on yourself. No panic, OK? Each contraction brings your baby closer.

EffiePerine · 23/07/2007 11:37

Any news? Spunds like you're on your way
