Urgent Lochia Question

Hi,

Am 12 days post delivery and just passed a large clot - think salad tomato.

Have had a feeling like my vagina has a dead leg (achy, dragging, heavy?) since delivery but otherwise feel ok.

I'm a FTM so have no idea if this is normal...

Am bleeding relatively heavily - bright red blood all day - have covers maybe a 1/5 (in area) of a pad in 25 mins.

Thoughts?

Sounds fairly normal to me! Congrats OP!

Tottie · 03/04/2019 00:19

Have you been discharged from midwifery care? Has your community midwife asked you about your blood loss at any of your post natal checks?

absolutehush · 03/04/2019 00:22

Not been discharged by midwife, no...

Not been asked either!

Am glad to hear large clots are normal, haven't had any clots so far so was surprised to see this one!

12 days post delivery seems like a long time to be passing such a large clot. I would contact your midwife or GP and ask for advice, just to be cautious.

Tottie · 03/04/2019 00:23

I would call the hospital/birthing unit you delivered at and just explain what's just happened and that you're hoping for some advice. Is the heavy, dragging feeling still there since passing the clot?

Tottie · 03/04/2019 00:24

That is rather a large clot though. Have you kept it by any chance?

absolutehush · 03/04/2019 00:25

Heavy dragging feeling still there - slightly worse if anything.

I think I'll ask midwife tomorrow. Don't want to risk it but also suspect this is within the range of normal!

OP posts:
absolutehush · 03/04/2019 00:25

@Tottie yes - in a ziplock bag in fridge!

It doesn't sound normal to me. Anything larger than a fifth pence piece is a concern. What is the reason for you still being under midwifery care? Is it routine in your area? I would definitely call the ward and ask about it. They're open 24 hrs/7 days!

Tottie · 03/04/2019 00:30

Well done for keeping it. Is your cmw due to come and see you tomorrow?

weirdbutok · 03/04/2019 00:33

Wait, salad tomato. I was thinking cherry tomato! That's a big clot op. Best ask the professionals.

absolutehush · 03/04/2019 00:34

Still under MW due to timings of clinic for final weigh in, rather than any specific reason....

I'm actually going to see her, and having my stitches checked (oh joy)

Definitely not normal to pass such a large clot at day 12. Does your lochia smell offensive? Let your midwife know

Tottie · 03/04/2019 00:50

I see. I would still call the post natal ward/Labour ward now and just mention it to them. Would you say its larger than a golf ball in size? Remember to take your tomato with you tomorrow Wink It might have a piece of membranes or placenta within It, although your amount of blood loss sounds normal. Are you breast feeding? Sorry for all the questions!

absolutehush · 03/04/2019 00:53

Poor midwife! What a joyous freezer bag I'm going to give her Shock

No smell or anything, just the funny dead leg feeling and the clot plus bleeding which isn't heavy - just heavier than I'm used to!

I've given into my worry and called 111 but am suspicious as I feel like everyone ends up in a&e with them due to the super low risk approach!

OP posts:
absolutehush · 03/04/2019 00:54

Oh and yes @Tottie I'm BF - actually DD just had a looooong cluster feed. Could that have released the tomato?!?

Why can't this stuff happen at 10am when I can just call the MW?!?

OP posts:
Itsalwayssunny · 03/04/2019 00:59

Can you call your out of hours midwife number? That likely take you through to your maternity unit. A salad tomato is quite large. Had you been sitting/lying down for a long period prior to it passing? I found clots worse after that, although I don't think I was still passing clots on day 12.

absolutehush · 03/04/2019 01:03

@Itsalwayssunny yes, had been sitting for a couple of hours, feeding DD and watching TV.

This is my first clot - if I'd had a few before this then I probably wouldn't be bothered.

I think the consensus is not normal, phone for advice which I'm doing with 111 and I will speak to midwife tomorrow as well...

Same thing happened to me at 12 days pp 2 weeks ago, phoned midwife and she said that anything up to the size of a satsuma was normal as long as I wasn't showing any signs of infection ( nasty smell, pain etc) . It's worth mentioning to your own midwife but I'm sure it's nothing to worry about Smile

Tottie · 03/04/2019 01:11

Yes Bf absolutely could have released the clot! You CAN call a midwife now! Were you given contact numbers for midwives and PN ward when you were discharged from the hospital? I work in maternity and we have mum's and dad's call at all hours to ask questions regarding breast feeding, lochia and unsettled babies etc, its our job to answer the calls and questions! The midwife isn't going to care about seeing a blood clot, they see all sorts of stuff, to be honest she may want to see it to check it is just blood and not placenta etc.

Tottie · 03/04/2019 01:13

Congratulations on your newborn by the way Flowers

Smotheroffive · 03/04/2019 01:19

It is normal, have also passed same. Unlikely to be a blood clot, as that would be super huge. More likely a gathering of liquid and left behind membranes being brought out with blood. If you put it on a tissue it will disappear, unless it is all blood.
If it is all blood, I think you should double-check, especially you have dead-leg feeling in your vagina Shock.

Have you already mentioned that to your MW?

Smotheroffive · 03/04/2019 01:20

Oh and yes, huge congratulations for you and new baby Smile. Flowers

myboysaremyworld135 · 03/04/2019 07:50

Win remember the dragging feeling from both my boys- mine was always worse when I'd done too much too soon. Could you be overdoing it?

Farmerswifey12 · 03/04/2019 07:54

I was always told with mine that nothing bigger than a 50p was to be left and I was to phone in.

I just took a photo of it once to show the midwife
