Im pregnant with my first and quite like the homebirth option. But i live in the country and not sure if its silly of me. I would like to know how many of you needed treatment/aftercare after giving birth to your first.

First baby ideal labour and birth no stitches just grazing

Upduffered · 24/03/2019 22:00

First baby, foreceps delivery and 3 stitches.

Hunkyd0ry · 24/03/2019 22:01

I needed stitches and monitoring as waters went before labour started.
I’m considering a home birth for my second as wanted to be home ASAP but DH isn’t sure so will probably try and midwife led unit instead

Ribbonsonabox · 24/03/2019 22:02

I needed stitches with my first but I do think it's because it was a long drawn out induction resulting in an episiotomy....

HalyardHitch · 24/03/2019 22:02

For me first, i had a homebirth and lay on the sofa for my stitches while DH shined the torch so the midwife could see. It was bloody brilliant Grin

JoinTheDots · 24/03/2019 22:03

No stitches required just a graze.

olderthanyouthink · 24/03/2019 22:04

First baby, accidental home birth alone, no stitches (small surface skin tear, Midwife halfheartedly offered stitches I declined). I needed the placenta removed and us checking over, a Midwife refused to come out (I think there was confusion over where we were) so we were taken in, otherwise could have stayed home.

Rose198 · 24/03/2019 22:05

Forceps, episiotomy, sepsis in labour and an extended hospital stay for me unfortunately.

Byebyefriend · 24/03/2019 22:06

I had stitches with my first but he had both hands up so was wider coming out. Also had sepsis so was very glad to be in hospital for immediate help.

DramaAlpaca · 24/03/2019 22:07

I had an epidural after a long labour with DC1, which led to an episiotomy & a forceps delivery. I can't remember how many stitches, but it all healed quickly.

My next two deliveries didn't need any intervention & DC3 was a lovely, easy home birth. I wouldn't have considered a home birth for my first, though, it's too much of an unknown.

Horehound · 24/03/2019 22:08

Oh so midwives do the stitches?!

Rose189 that sounds horrific.

First baby homebirth, 2nd degree tear, stitches on spare bed with 2 MWs marvelling at how fast the labour had been. Twas fine.

Horehound · 24/03/2019 22:10

Yeh that's what I'm thinking dramaalpaca Maybe too risky and ive heard good things about the local mlu

2nd degree tear, stitches, no problems at all, was hardly aware of them.

Lwmommy · 24/03/2019 22:10

Hospital induced birth with 2nd degree tear and stitches.

I think there would have been less chance of the tear if i was at home because i would have had 1:1 care, whereas the midwife on the ward thought i was wrong about needing to.push and left it a while before checking so by the time she did.check i was crowning and the pushing was uncontrolled and rushed.

QueenOfThorns · 24/03/2019 22:12

I had my stitches done by a doctor (a very grumpy one), but the tearing was quite severe.

TillyTheTiger · 24/03/2019 22:15

First birth - episiotomy, forceps and stitches. I'm planning a home birth for my 2nd pregnancy though, as long as I remain low risk.

There is more info here, but around 45% of first time mothers opting for home birth have to be transferred into hospital.

I had a third degree tear stitched in theatre under spinal anaesthesia by doctors.

TeddyIsaHe · 24/03/2019 22:18

Stitches. Dd came out with her hand next to her face and tore me quite badly.

I had to stay in hospital for 24 hours after the birth as I had group b strep and dd needed to be monitored to make sure she hadn’t caught it during birth. She was fine (I had antibiotics during labour)

Oly4 · 24/03/2019 22:19

Stitches and baby needed resus and special care. I thought the hospital care we both received was brilliant

SospanFrangipan · 24/03/2019 22:25

First baby. His heartbeat kept falling with every contraction, and took longer each time to come back up. They decided to give me an episiotomy and use a suction cap to pull DS out. I had a fair few stitches afterwards.

Raspberry88 · 24/03/2019 22:25

Attempted homebirth for my first (and only.) I did have stitches as I went in an ambulance to hospital and ended up in an EMCS a few hours later. The idea of a homebirth is great...as long as you're close enough to a hospital in case of any problems.

BackforGood · 24/03/2019 22:25

I don't want you to be frightened of labour.
It is different for every woman.
I have 3dc. If I'd had home birth then dc1 wouldn't be here, and after dc3, I wouldn't be here.
No doubt someone will be able to find statistics to show that you are likely to be fine and not need medical intervention, but it isn't a risk I'd be prepared to take.

ineedaholidaynow · 24/03/2019 22:26

Teddy DS came out with his arm up by his head, which didn't help with tearing! Also had retained placenta, which needed a doctor to remove.

hazeyjane · 24/03/2019 22:27

Stitches in theatre with surgeon after dd1, stayed in 2 nights

Stitches by midwife with dd2....then restricted by surgeon...stayed in 1 night

ELCS for ds, quite ill after and ds in special care so in for 8 nights.
