Did you scream during labour?

I'm wondering how often women scream in labour - did you scream during labour?

OP posts:

With DC1 I screamed like a woman possessed. He was back to back and forceps delivery, so episiotomy and with only gas and air for company. So yes, there was screaming when they yanked him out.
All much calmer with DC2!

Thestral · 24/03/2019 21:32

Yes, but my scar was rupturing.

MW told me to be quiet and that the noise wasn't helping anyone. Hmm I wished bad things upon her (although non-verbally, because I couldn't talk in actual words at that point).

Fantababy · 24/03/2019 21:32

Definitely a moo from me. Lots of moos. Baby was back to back so epidural before it got totally unbearable.

Applesun · 24/03/2019 21:33

How can I make a post please

Awks · 24/03/2019 21:34

No I moo'd like a cow 😂

DramaAlpaca · 24/03/2019 21:34

I was more of a moo-er than a screamer.

OhWifey · 24/03/2019 21:34

Yes very much so both times. Really didn't think I'd be a screamer. Back to back. Actually found it helpful during transition. Helped me focus. No way I could have stopped it even if MW had told me to though.

Babdoc · 24/03/2019 21:35

No. I delivered both my children in my own labour suite (I was an anaesthetist) and didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of the midwives I worked with!
The pain was pretty severe with my first, who was occipito-posterior (back to back) for almost the whole labour, but I had a tens machine and some entonox for the final couple of hours, so managed by gritting my teeth and groaning under my breath!

chocolatelog · 24/03/2019 21:35

Oh god yes, 5 babies here and the 5th was the worst funnily enough. I screamed with all of them when the ring of fire was happening 🙈

With my 4th they had to get her out quick and I was cut and I heard the snip and the pain shot through me 😬

I remember the midwives telling me to shhh but I couldn't control it, it was happening and I didn't realise I was even doing it 😬🙈

MagicalPinkUnicornFlower · 24/03/2019 21:35

I screamed towards the end. Before that was very loud yelling from around 8cm. Was back to back, felt like my spine was being cleaved in half just above my hips, and gas and air did fuck all for the pain. I had no urge to push at all, I probably could have shaved a good hour or so off labour and a lot of pain if somebody told me to just goddamned push. Screaming attracted the head midwife who threw me straight up into stirrups and was all over very quickly after that. Pushing helped with the pain and I stopped screaming at that point.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/03/2019 21:36

Not screaming, but quite noisy with plenty of 'ngggggh' type of noise and frustrated 'arrrgggghhh' occasionally.

My midwife told me to stop wasting my energy by making too much noise. I had no control over it.

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 24/03/2019 21:36

Definitely a lot of mooing, not screaming. Just a deep, carnal moo. Wincing and quiet wimpering for the first few hours and then my body started to turn itself inside out so MOOOOOOOOOOO. DH was rather spooked.

spugzbunny · 24/03/2019 21:37

Back to back labour. I agree on the moo. It reminded me of a water buffalo! Very primal and completely out of my control.

BillyAndTheSillies · 24/03/2019 21:37

Frustrated groans and definitely some mooing.

Someone told me that screaming wastes energy so I kept it in the back of my mind to try not to scream.

DoctorDread · 24/03/2019 21:39

Yes definitely a moo-ing rather than screaming. It's a low sound that builds up from inside and radiates out.

LadyKylieShagworthy · 24/03/2019 21:39

I started to scream as I thought it was sort of what you should do but the midwife told me to shut up and "save my breath for pushing". I ended up with a forceps delivery but that comment has stayed with me for 25 years.

TrySinging · 24/03/2019 21:40

I was a moo-er too. It's not a screamy type pain I don't think, because it builds and then fades.

Jinglejanglefish · 24/03/2019 21:40

No, just deep breathes and moaning

Izzy12345 · 24/03/2019 21:41

Grunting screaming and one pint crying 😁

RogersVideo · 24/03/2019 21:42

Yes I did. Back to back baby who was badly positioned, wasn't able to push him out. The midwife told me not to waste energy on screaming so I did my best.

I got the impression from some of the midwives comments that I was the loud one on the ward, so I guess most women don't scream?

mineofuselessinformation · 24/03/2019 21:43

My voice won't go high enough to scream, so no.
I tried not to make any noise with dc1 (bad idea).
With dc2 I let rip and discovered my ability to yodel! I got told off by the midwife - but carried on anyway as it made me feel better. Grin

BusySittingDown · 24/03/2019 21:43

No, I didn't scream at all, in either labour - I never swore either which is bloody surprising as I have a mouth like a marine the rest of the time!

BeeMyBaby · 24/03/2019 21:44

I moo'd with all my 3 too. It's not a noise you can choose to not make, it just happens. Moo. I wonder if people from other countries make a different noise? (Like we say a dog woofs but the country my husband is from says 'how how'). But with guttural birthing noises.

Sexnotgender · 24/03/2019 21:46

Deep guttural moo/moan rather than scream.

Mamabearx4 · 24/03/2019 21:46

First two no, more mom's
3rd I screamed the place down, she came really fast
