My friend gave birth to one of her twins a few days ago after her waters broke. Her cervix is now closed and the other twin is still in there going strong (non-identical so they have their own placentas and amniotic sacs).

Apparently it's pretty unusual but has been known - normally the other twin is born 2 or 3 days later but this has been over a week now.

Isn't that incredible?!

OMG! You mean she has to do the whole of labour, twice within a fortnight? I thought with twins, that even though you had to push two babies out, at least you only had to do the first stage once! Obviously not...

And looking after a newborn while you're still 9 months pregnant too.

SoupDragon · 06/09/2004 18:42

Wow!!

Does that mean the first twin was born at the end or August and will be in a different school year??

fio2 · 06/09/2004 18:44

thats amazing, has she sold her story yet?

wishingchair · 06/09/2004 18:45

I know - twins with different birthdays. And that's exactly what I said about having to go through labour again so quickly - ow ow ow!

The baby is very small though as about 3 months premature so is in intensive care ...

fio2 · 06/09/2004 18:46

awww I hope the baby is okay

SoupDragon · 06/09/2004 18:49

So the second twin could be nearly 3 months younger?

Miaou · 06/09/2004 18:49

Keep us posted, wishingchair - I'm amazed, never heard of that happening before! My heart goes out to her!

Tessiebear · 06/09/2004 18:51

Wow, you must let us know when the other is born!

wishingchair · 06/09/2004 18:58

I will keep you posted - send lots of positive thoughts into the ether for them all

I think it's likely the other one will be born soon - they're keeping a very close eye on them both because of the risk of infection because the cervix has opened. Plus the placenta from baby number 1 is still in there ... they didn't want to risk pulling it out in case it was somehow attached to the other one etc.

And apparently no to the school year question soupdragon - they're not in the UK so it's not the same timing, but if they were, in theory, they could be ... amazing!!!

What an amazing event wishingchair. Please let us know how she gets on. How is your friend feeling- has she got awful post birth hormones raging whilst being pregnant. And how is she getting on with feeding?

Demented · 07/09/2004 14:20

Wow, amazing, hope everything works out OK. Just to echo everyone else please let us know what happens.

smellymelly · 07/09/2004 15:23

How amazing - I have never heard of that happening, I just assumed they would come at the same time, although I know they could have different birthdays if one was born just before midnight and one after.

I'm 23 weeks pregnant with twins, and I am a little concerned about them coming too early, I really hope they are both ok, 3 months sounds so early.

smellymelly · 09/09/2004 17:32

Any news yet?

kkgirl · 10/09/2004 09:05

God thats amazing.
Has the other twin been born yet? It must be really worrying for your friend.

Also congratulations Smellymelly. Twins can come up to 6 weeks early, and unfortunately sometimes before. I have 8 year old twins, who amazingly were a few days early, and were really well, and healthy. A lot of my friends had their twins 4-6 weeks early, the midwife should explain this to you, but you might want to try and find a twins club, because I find it so supportive being able to speak to girls who had experienced labour, birth and afterwards, I could't have coped without.

smellymelly · 10/09/2004 09:43

Thanks kkgirl - I really must get myself organised into contacting the local twinsclub.

I have been advised that they could come early, I'm even more worried as my dd threatened to come at 28 and 30 weeks (managed to go full term though in the end). But no-one has a crystal ball, so we have to wait and see. They have told me that they will induce me at 37 weeks though.

Would love to know how wishingchair's friend's babies are.....

kkgirl · 10/09/2004 09:52

Smellymelly

Try not to get yourself too worried, but it is best to be prepared and know what could happen.

Your comment about inducing at 37 weeks made me smile as I remembered my midwife being adamant that I wouldn't go past 36 weeks, and I was nearly 40 and there were going to let me go on. The morning of the day I went into labour I said to dh that I couldn't go on, I was so big and uncomfortable, and he laughed and said you have to etc. My waters went at lunchtime and that was it.

Good luck

linnet · 10/09/2004 10:04

Wishing Chair, this happened to a woman in Glasgow a few years ago. She had one twin then her cervix closed up and the other twin was born 28 days later.

SmellyMelly, my friends twins arrived 2 weeks late!

wishingchair · 13/09/2004 08:59

Just wanted to give you an update - baby 2 is still hanging in there ... baby 1 is doing really well too.

OP posts:
pupuce · 13/09/2004 09:06

I wondered if number 2 would be a section because they need to get 2 placentas out ? Do you know ?
Great news though
Thanks

whizzz · 13/09/2004 09:11

Pupuce - never thought about that and the placenta. Think at the moment they're expecting her to go into labour naturally - but interesting thought ... how would they get the first placenta out. It's weird because she's not had any bleeding or anything so maybe it's still attached and 'alive', in which case maybe it'd be delivered once the second baby is born. No idea but will let you know!

OP posts:
Cam · 13/09/2004 13:48

That is defimitely an amazing story - can't say i envy her though but better for baby 2 to hang on as long as possible, I guess. My sister's twins were late, she had a normal delivery and in total the two boys weighed over 15 lbs (yes she was enormous at the end and could barely walk)

willow2 · 14/09/2004 09:53

How's it going? Been following this thread and am so hoping everything goes ok for all of them.
Can't imagine what it must be like to have one small baby to look after and still be soooo pregnant!
