yes, when I was in labour with my dd, the mw was asking me to push and I was ignoring her, I had decided I wanted to go to sleep and get up the next day and try again... when she asked me to push I pushed her and my dh with my feet, not very dignified labour.... I did eventually push, but I really didn't want to... it was so bloody painful.

I really don't remember having an overwhelming urge to push, although DD was OP and i do remember contractions being so painful I couldn't push, so maybe I was fighting against it? Got told off by MW! Ended up with episiotomy, 2 tears and ventouse delivery in theatre.

This time I'm having a CS (next Tuesday).

Kathyis6incheshigh · 23/06/2007 20:52

yes cos I was still in the car and hadn't got to the hospital.
got there with a couple of mins to spare....

yes or i would have had DS2 whilst getting stuck in between 2 sets of doors in maternity! made my way slowly to delivery suite with my legs crossed, my hand on my fanjo holding him in, staring at the ceiling glad it was the middle of the night

with dd i was sure i didnt get the urge to push, all i wanted to do was curl in a ball, midwives then coached me when to push, it was horrible. With ds the midwife told me to turn onto all fours when i started curling up into a ball, only then did i get the urge to push!!!

musicianswidowAKAmumofmonsters · 23/06/2007 20:56

must add that as the midwife was examining me when i got on the ward that DS2s head was visible and by then i couldn't not push!

twoplusone · 23/06/2007 20:58

I couldnt fight it once the proper urge came I just had to push, even though mw told me I would be pushing for hours and hours.. .....

3pushes later ds landed at the bottom of the bed..

LadyTophamHatt · 23/06/2007 21:01

yes I did, with ds4.
My head was saying keep him in there but my body was pushing him out.

This is why the birth was so horrific....God it was the scariest experince of my life.

LunarSea · 24/06/2007 07:39

ds2 arrived with so little warning that with the first noticeable contraction (and no actual pushing) his head was crowning! So dh was on the phone to 999 and relaying instructions not to push and try to keep him where he was until an ambulance could get to us. Fortunately they weren't too far away, and I didn't really have an urge to push anyway (more like he just seemed to have an urge to crawl out by himself), so I did manage to keep him in situ until they arrived - and then it only took two pushes and it was all over - 30 minutes from start to end!

i had really good labour with ds was doing really well then wanted to push, mw said push when i was ready, it hurt like hell so i tried to cross legs decided that i didnt want to do it (had epidural with dd) mw pushed my legs apart (witch) and out he popped.

MW told me not to push with DD1 as she "wasnt ready!"

Too late mrs, me thinks - 2 pushes and hey presto!

mamijacacalys · 24/06/2007 13:46

With DS consultant told me to 'try not to push for half an hour or so' to see if the head would turn enough for him to be able to position the forceps. Was the weirdest thing ever! As everyone's said, contractions/pushing just happen so can't really control them.
(BTW DS born with episoptomy/forceps after said half an hour of 'not' pushing, did have a bit of a graze on his head from the forceps so don't know if it made much difference to his position?!)

tryingtoleave · 25/06/2007 12:03

I felt the urge to push from when I was 2cm (my contractions were really just my body pushing) and was told that if I didn't control it I would end up with a cs. Very frightning and difficult It was 4 hours before the mw said I was allowed to push - which was such a relief. Pushing felt so easy after not pushing.

cheritongirl · 26/06/2007 15:03

i remember thinking "i really really really don't want to push coz its going to bloody hurt" but then something reminding me that if i DID push then this agony would be over sooner... and it was!

MascaraOHara · 26/06/2007 15:05

In answer to the OP.. I was told not to push, not pushing when I weanted to was harder than actually pushing for me.. although by the time they told me to push my contractions had stopped!
