Throwing up during caesarean

Wontbedoingthatagain · 18/08/2018 22:28

About to have first c section the week after next. Worried about vomiting during it.

Did it happen to you? How common is it? What can I do to prevent it?

I wasn’t sick at all, am terrified of being sick and was really worried about it, but was fine so it’s by no means a certainty. Hope it all goes smoothly for you Smile

Cardiganandcuppa · 18/08/2018 22:30

Um. I’ve had two and didn’t throw up at all.
Labour made me throw up though.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 18/08/2018 22:32

Had two. No spewing.

Ledehe · 18/08/2018 22:33

I was sick during mine, well heaving, after baby was out and they were trying to manually contract my womb. I think it was the morphine because I've been sick every time I've had it.

I've never heard of it happening to anyone else though

Stormwhale · 18/08/2018 22:34

I was very sick, but the nice doctor very quickly gave me an antiemetic through the cannula which stopped it instantly. I started being sick after dd was born, and they gave me the drugs to stop it immediately. By the time i was in the bit where you recover for a minute it had stopped. Also the morphine made everything just lovely and I didn't give a shit I was throwing up. Everything was just lovely. Grin

You are advised not to eat before the procedure and given medication prior to it to prevent reflux and vomiting.

Anythingforacatslife · 18/08/2018 22:35

I was sick during my first one but no one batted an eyelid. All the staff were very caring and understanding, in what was an incredibly stressful situation.

I threw up a lot (maybe ten times in quick succession) during my emergency section. Obviously you can't move so just turn your head to the side and they'll get you a cardboard bowl. It was just water as I hadn't eaten anything while I'd been labouring. They fiddled with the anti-emetic medicine and I eventually stopped. It wasn't like normal throwing up where you feel horrendous and its all chunks of carrot etc! I was very nauseous when I was labouring anyway so it wasn't necessarily the cs that made me feel sick.

My second section was planned, I had fasted except a few drinks. I felt queasy but mentioned this and they said the anti-emetic had just been administered and would kick in quickly. It really did and I don't think I was actually sick.

There's a lot of other stuff going on and the vomiting (if it happens) is a tiny tiny part of a busy and exciting time. And I would have thought it's more common in emergency cs rather than elective. Don't worry, you'll be fine! And congratulations when it comes!

Colabottle10 · 18/08/2018 22:36

I was sick but that's because I had HG. Said I was going to spew, gave me a bowl to the side of my head, I spewed. They gave me a drug and instantly better. In fact I remember them saying why the fuck couldn't I have had that drug for the last 9 months.

Sweetsongbird1 · 18/08/2018 22:36

I’ve had two and no vom

Elliss2018 · 18/08/2018 22:36

I was sick during mine, the staff were so lovely. It's such a weird feeling because you can't feel yourself heaving! Good luck you'll be fine Thanks

MissBax · 18/08/2018 22:37

What makes you think you'll us spew up? It's not at all common ?

Mamaryllis · 18/08/2018 22:37

Yep. Barfed. Totally. They did warn me it might happen. It’s the bit when they apply fundal pressure to pop the baby out of the cavity. Utterly gross. Yes. I was very sick. I think the pressure issue is pretty easily resolved (ie once they finish bouncing on you to pop the baby out, the barfing stops). But I also think if you are fairly squeamish, then the idea of someone rootling around in a giant hole in your abdomen and pulling stuff out while you are awake may not be a great idea.
It’s fine though. The sickness is pretty quick really. And you move in fairly quickly what with the whole baby thing Smile

Wontbedoingthatagain · 18/08/2018 22:39

So if it happens it’s not as awful as when you’re properly ill and throwing up?

Surely not much comes out if you’ve been fasting?

3 sections. No vomiting. Did have nausea due to nerves and with my 2nd they didn’t manage my blood pressure well (that’s the short version of a longer story) which caused terrible nausea. But no vomiting.

Babdoc · 18/08/2018 22:41

Hello, retired anaesthetist here. We keep a vomit bowl handy on the anaesthetic machine, and inject you with anti sickness drugs as required. Just tell your anaesthetist if you think you’re about to retch, and turn your head to the side a little so you don’t choke on any, or contaminate the surgical drapes if you chuck the stuff forwards!
It’s not all that uncommon- the rummaging can stimulate your vagus nerve, or a bp drop from the spinal, or pressure on your vena cava can make you nauseated.
Don’t worry about it in advance, the theatre staff are quite used to dealing with it. Just look forward to your lovely new baby! Good luck,OP.

DiabolicalMess · 18/08/2018 22:41

I vomited and passed out briefly in my first c-section, I think because my blood pressure dropped very quickly. Second c-section I was right on to the anaesthetist as soon as I had any twinge of feeling faint and queasy and he sorted it for me immediately.

HouseOfSix · 18/08/2018 22:43

No it's nothing like being sick from having norovirus or something. Not at all like that. If you feel sick let them know, they will give you the drugs and a bowl. Turn your head to the side. It will be completely fine. Also fast beforehand and your stomach will be quite empty anyway.

MsJaneAusten · 18/08/2018 22:43

Two sections. No vomiting.

The other thing to remember is that you will have an anesthetist sat right next to you. While most other medical staff are concentrating on your lower half, the anesthetist will be 100% focused on you. If you do have any sickness, they will deal with it quickly, or ensure someone else does.

shivbo2014 · 18/08/2018 22:49

Sorry to say I threw up a lot. I wasnt expecting it as i had an emergency c section so hadn't done any research. I think they gave me anti sickness stuff.. didnt work. It was a really weird sensation. I would still opt for an elective if i have another so wasn't that bad... Good Luck xx

WontBeUsingPassMyParcelAgain · 18/08/2018 22:50

Are you an emitophobe like me? This would really worry me, but in fact I was sick during both labours and it was simply not an issue. I don't really know why it wasn't, but it was such a small part of a big experience, that I just didn't have the energy to worry about it. DH knew that I hated the idea of it and any mess and was well prepped and did a great job of assisting me (and avoiding mess!) I was really proud of myself afterwards for being sick and not being terrified. I hope the posters above have put your mind at ease. It sounds as if the anaesthetists can really help to manage it too.

WoahBodyforrrrm · 18/08/2018 22:52

I was vomiting. My bp dropped but I’d also broken my fast as my planned c-section was cancelled due to lack of NICU beds, but then had to happen as one of my twins was in distress. I was quickly given a bowl and just turned my head to the side. I was immediately given drugs to stop the sickness which worked a treat!

CranberryLemonade · 18/08/2018 22:54

I’m an absolute wimp when it comes to sickness so I put that in my birth plan along with a request that if they had to give me anything or do anything that might make me sick to give me an anti emetic first. They had really taken that on board and gave me the anti emetic before the emergency section and even after they really monitored me she said a drop in BP might make me feel sick and corrected it as soon as it started so it didn’t happen. Happy to say I was totally fine. I know there’s a lot said about doing birth plans and their worth but I am SO glad I put that in mine!

Mustangsallyis · 18/08/2018 22:57

2 ELCS here and no vomiting. As pp have said, had to fast and was given an anti emetic ahead of the birth.
