Throwing up during caesarean

About to have first c section the week after next. Worried about vomiting during it.

Did it happen to you? How common is it? What can I do to prevent it?

No vomiting during the section but very sick once in recovery. After they figured out what drugs worked to make me stop I was all good.

YouCantBeSirius · 18/08/2018 23:05

I vomited during and after my section. I think it was because my blood pressure dropped quite low and also I was giving morphine which always makes me sick. I was given anti sickness meds that stopped it quickly.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 19/08/2018 00:15

2 x emcs. No sickness during but I refused the anti-emetics for my 2nd and threw my lunch up (there is a definitely a lesson there).

Wacadu · 19/08/2018 00:18

I vomited and my blood pressure dropped and I almost fainted. They sorted me out quickly though.

shirleyschmidt · 19/08/2018 00:35

I had a quick unexpected throw up. It was only a small amount, I had an EMCS but hadn't eaten prior. I remember suddenly announcing to DH 'gonna be sick!!' And the anesthetist quickly held a little cardboard bowl thing for me to turn to the side and puke into. I found it mildly stressful as you're on your back, and numb from the neck down so it's almost hard to do. But not something I'd worry about, I never gave it a second thought until I saw this thread!

elliejjtiny · 19/08/2018 00:35

Not with my elcs (maybe because I hadn't been allowed to eat or drink anything) but with my emcs I had been drinking water and Lucozade so I puked it all back up during the section. It was horrible puking and not being able to move. And I wished I'd had the time to give my hair a good brush and tie it back properly before going into theatre. Thankfully I hadn't drunk very much as I was trying to avoid needing to use the commode so I only puked 2 or 3 times. I was pretty out of it by that point so not sure if they gave me drugs to try and stop the puking or not.

BertieBotts · 19/08/2018 00:38

They can give you an anti emetic proactively if you've had a sickness reaction to anaesthetic before.

JoanFrenulum · 19/08/2018 00:48

I threw up six times during my csection. It felt very weird, because you can't feel the bits that are heaving because of the anaesthetic, but they're heaving nonetheless. Someone held a bowl for me to throw up into. I vaguely remember the new bug being surprised and the seasoned surgical team telling them it is a thing that happens.

I threw up more or less continually all through labour though so by the time we got to the emcs it was just annoying.

I'm still a bit sad that they said to me "Do you want to hold your lovely new daughter?" and I said "I'm BEING SICK" (retch retch) so they gave her to her dad instead.

SomeKnobend · 19/08/2018 00:57

I was sick, they told me at one point "this is the bit where people are usually sick" and someone had a cardboard bowl ready before I even felt sick, then all of a sudden I vomited and then was fine again!

FixItUpChappie · 19/08/2018 01:20

well, I don't know if this helps but I barfed all they way through both of my sections. The anesthesiologist will fiddle with the meds to try to help. IF it happens just turn your head to the side, get on with it and remember - this to shall pass. Everyone will be very professional regarding OP.

Willofthesimpletons · 19/08/2018 01:24

I had an emergency c section and felt very sick after, but wasn't as they were very good about the meds. The worst thing I suppose was not wanting to hold the baby as a result.

Sidneythecam · 19/08/2018 01:25

I was sick right after they scooped him out. Emergency section after twelve hours of labour. I couldn't feel a thing but the anaesthetist was at my head talking away to me (lovely man) I said "oh goodness I think I'm gonna be sick" and he grabbed a cardboard bowl, I could do nothing but turn my head. It was fine. Sick a few times in say, five minutes and then was handed my wee son

Good luck!

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 19/08/2018 01:28

Elective cs and I wasn’t sick. Felt very weird though and had a bit of trouble with breathing properly but after a bit of oxygen was fine.

30hours · 19/08/2018 01:32

I vomited during my (hour long section).
Someone holds your bead back and sucks it out with a tube. They don’t let you eat beforehand.

JKCR2017 · 23/08/2018 18:10

No vomiting with my first section. With my second I started vomiting soon afterwards (i was told it was really common to be sick). They give me an anti sickness injection and the sickness stopped!😊

Butternutissquashed · 23/08/2018 18:18

No sickness with my first. With my second I felt a bit dizzy and sick as my blood pressure dropped. They popped something in my cannula and I felt instantly fine. No sickness after, just insane itching.

AppleKatie · 23/08/2018 18:33

It was fantastic. I had HG was sick throughout pregnancy.

Then I felt sick during my CS the anthesist said ‘don’t worry’ and put some magic drugs down the drip. Honestly AMAZING. Where the man was for the previous 9 months I’ve no idea.

bloodyhouses · 23/08/2018 18:55

I was really really worried I would be sick.
I panicked about it so much that the anaesthetist gave me anti sickness medication into my cannula before they had even started.
I wasn’t sick once and didn’t even feel queasy.

Kewqueue · 23/08/2018 18:59

No, I didn't. I felt a bit queasy when I saw them doing the incision so decided not to watch!

Angeliki159 · 28/08/2018 23:27

I felt sick. Was given anti sickness drug and was fine after.
Wasn't sick at all.

TurquoiseDress · 29/08/2018 01:19

I've had two ELCS and didn't vomit with either of them.

Did feel nauseous a few hours after the second one, though no throwing up, but it may have been due to the 30+ degrees on the post natal ward!Confused
