35 weeks & waters have broken. Please may I have a hand hold?

I'm 35 weeks today & this morning my waters broke. I've been in hospital since this morning & so far, other than the odd tightening, I've had no contractions.

I've had a steroid injection & they've started me on antibiotics.

I've had an ultrasound this afternoon which revealed no water behind baby's spine (spine to my left - limbs to my right) but a reasonable amount around baby's limbs.

If I go in to labour, I've told them that I want a c-section (was supposed to be booking the date for 39 weeks at my consultant appointment this morning but I was obviously "otherwise engaged")

Baby seems fine (feels like it's doing riverdance in there!) But I'm missing DD1 (staying with her Grandparents) & DP is stuck in USA at work until Saturday at the earliest.

Fortunately, I have my Mum on standby to be with me IF anything starts happening or I need to go for a section.

What no-one can tell me (don't worry - I'm not expecting anyone to get their crystal balls out & start trying to guess - although tomorrow night's EuroMillion numbers would be great!) Is how likely it is that I'll go in to labour or what is likely to happen.

I guess it's just a waiting game now.

Oh goodness, sounds like a lot going on. These babies like to time things well too! Hopefully things can stay put until DH can get home. Have you been advised to have an induction at all? I know several 35weekers who are all doing really well.

CountingToThree · 14/06/2018 19:31

My waters went at 35+2 with no contractions. They gave me a couple of days in hospital to see if I went into labour naturally. I didn't so was induced. She was 6lb 1. Had to stay in a few tivtest blood sugar levels (I think) and then had to go back in a few days later as she was jaundiced. All was fine really - she was our first so didn't have anything else to compare to and no other children to consider. Second was a bit of a shock, 8lb 5 and in less than 18hrs.

DustyMaiden · 14/06/2018 19:36

I would have thought it almost inevitable you will go into labour. When I had DD they didn’t leave you for longer that 24 hrs after water broke, but that was a long time ago.
My DD was 33 weeks 4 days 7bs 4 oz and no problems.

Best of luck

My mum's waters broke at 32 weeks and she had my sister 2 weeks later at 34 weeks. That was the early 80s and she was fine after a couple of weeks in hospital.

Mine broke at 37 weeks with my first baby and they wouldn't let me go longer than 24 hours because of infection risk. Baby was born naturally within a few hours.

Second baby was planned c section at 36 weeks. I also had the steroid injections but baby was fine.

Both of them were on the small side and jaundiced but no serious problems. Best of luck.

Thank you all. I was born at 35 weeks almost 30 years ago so am some what reassured that baby will be okay - bar the possibility of needing a stay in SCBU.

I had said previously to this that I don't want to be induced again - I had a failed induction resulting in a C-section at 38+1 with my first & the induction process was horrible. I never want to go through that again. I really don't know what to hope for tbh - that things stay as is & baby stays in or that I go in to labour & get to meet them!

I had a section at 35+2 in April.

I’d had steroid injections the day before and she came out screaming. She went to neonatal for 24 hours and had a blood transfusion (but that was to do with the reason they delivered her early).

Other than A LOT of photo therapy for jaundice she’s grand. Weighed 6lb 11oz! Her sister was 6oz 13 pz at 38+1.

We did have to stay in a while on a transitional ward (9 days) and being away from home and my toddler was the hardest part. But it did mean I was well recovered from the section by the time we went home.

Good luck x

I had my son at 35 weeks he was tiny at 4,6 down to 4. He had to be tube fed but were kept in for 5 days and he thrived at home! Good luck

Aprilshouldhavebeenmyname · 14/06/2018 20:22

I had ds by emcs at 35weeks. Didn't need sc and bf within 24 hours.
Try and relax.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 14/06/2018 20:25

35 weeks isn’t worryingly early is it?

I have friends who have given birth around then and came home almost immediately.

elliejjtiny · 14/06/2018 20:42

This happened to me twice. First one born at 35+3 and stayed in neonatal for 4 weeks. Second born at 36+6 and spent 5 days in neonatal and then 3 days on the postnatal ward with me. Now aged 5 and 4.

KitKatCHA · 14/06/2018 20:49

My son was born at 34+5 and 5lb1, a week in SCBU and he was home. Now a strapping 7 year old. Great that you've had the steroids, I was told they really make a difference. From what I understand, now your waters have gone they will be looking to deliver baby in the next 48 hours to reduce the risk of infection. All the best Flowers

Geordiegirl1988 · 14/06/2018 20:52

This isn't that early and baby should be fine and may not even need scbu . Good luck and hope all goes well

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 14/06/2018 20:58

My waters went at 34+6. I was told that they'd keep me in hospital for 48 hours but let me home after that if nothing had happened. I started early labour just as I was about to go home! Ds arrived at 35+1 weighing 5lb12oz. No need for SCBU and we were home a day or two after the birth.

GettingAwayWithIt · 14/06/2018 21:00

My waters broke at 34 + 5 with no contractions. Spent 24 hours in hospital and had two steroid injections. Also finished a cross stitch pattern for the baby's room while I was in there Grin I was sent home after the 24 hours as nothing was happening. Had a number of scans over the next few weeks with induction planned for 37 weeks. My little girl arrived at 36 + 2. She was tiny at 4lb 7oz. I had to have an emergency csection and we were in hospital for a week as she needed IV antibiotics, but she is now 10 weeks and two days old and is thriving, feeding like a champ, sleeping well and is surprisingly strong!

There is still water around baby so you might end up like I was and carry on for another 10 days. Maternity pads came in very useful as I didn't stop leaking fluid every few hours for those ten days! Good luck with it all Smile

My waters broke at 32+5. I spent a couple of days in hospital then they sent me home. I went into labour at 35+5 and had a C-section as baby was breech. Baby had a little bit of difficulty regulating his temperature and blood sugar so he was put in an incubator in my room for a few hours but he didn't need to go to special care or anything like that. We left hospital two days later. He's now a thriving 18 month old.

SomeKnobend · 14/06/2018 21:17

My waters went at 36 weeks. They induced after 24 hours of contractions not starting, due to infection risk. Baby was in a hot cot for jaundice for 2-3 days but otherwise perfectly fine.

Levithecat · 15/06/2018 16:10

DS was born at nearly 36w and didn’t need SCBU - we stayed in for 5 days, but that was to treat jaundice. He was SGA, but again nothing to do with being 35w.

Very best of luck. I imagine they’ll want to get things moving pretty quickly given risk of infection once waters go. I think they told me they’d give me 48hrs.

mommybear1 · 15/06/2018 16:29

Handhold OP this happened to me. I had no other symptoms but baby's movements slowed on the evening (water broke at 6am) I was booked for a ELCS and had CS the next day. Good luck OP thinking of you Thanks

mommybear1 · 16/06/2018 10:24

How are you today @TiggeryBear ?

Moonflower12 · 16/06/2018 11:02

DD4 was born at 34/35 weeks by ECS and was tiny but absolutely perfect. She didn't need SCBU. She's sat watching CBEEBIES as I type!

Moonflower12 · 16/06/2018 11:02

Hope all goes well and update us Thanks

TiggeryBear · 16/06/2018 17:30

Sorry for the lack of update - baby was born this morning via EMCS at 35+2 & is currently in SCBU as baby is having difficulties regulating blood sugar levels but aside from that is doing very well.

Sadly DP missed the birth as he was stuck on a plane so had my Mum with me, which was actually quite nice. (Obviously not the same as having DP, but you know what I mean).
