Disposable knickers?!

First time pregnancy and actually never planned on having children so I knew very little before all this - I'm about to start packing my hospital bag now I'm 27 weeks pregnant and wondered what everyone's thoughts on disposable kickers are post partum?

What are they like? Any better brands I should buy? On a tight budget so looking to get as much value for money as poss!!

Any advice would be amazing. 😊

I had some seamfree black shorts-style knickers anyway, and I just wore those.

I didn’t actually go up a knicker size - I assumed I would, but I didn’t. My pants are all quite stretchy and full-coverage anyway though, I imagine if I wore lacy little things normally I would have needed to buy new ones.

I just bought cheap thongs from Primark

I bought some disposable knickers. I tried them on but found them really uncomfortable so wore cheap Primark ones instead.

One thing in case you haven't thought about it (I hadn't). The clothes I went to hospital in to give birth all ended up getting thrown away by the doctors or widwives because they were pretty much destroyed. That was because something went wrong in my case (all worked out fine) but I had no spare clothes except my nightie (which I had planned to change into to give birth). So bring a spare change of clothes and make sure it's stuff you don't mind getting ruined just in case!

I wore disposable ones for a bit and would not recommend. They are uncomfortable and badly made, occasionally I would try to get in to a pair and they would just be too small even though other ones in the pack fit.

A doctor told me to get underwear 2 sizes larger than normal. I am usually size 10 and got size 14 full briefs from asda, 2 packs of 5. That was went I went back to hospital with an infection/haematoma thing in episiotomy. Not caused by disposable pants though I don't think!

Those massive pants are so comfy I still use them 6 months later. I never bled that much anyway so didn't get any stains on my underwear or have big spill ages or anything like that. I thought the bleeding would be torrential. I even got tena lady pants which I never used. Gave those to my grandma though.

Bengalcat thongs?? Nope, can’t imagine pulling some of them on with the stitches I had 😂

Cheap cotton knickers, massive full coverage ones, that fully cover your bum and can be hooked up over your tummy, probably 1 or 2 sizes bigger than normal.

3 years postpartum and I've still got a few pairs in my knicker draw that I now use on period days so well worth the cost IME.

I'd recommend getting enough pairs so you can reach for a new pair rather than having to worry about washing them, as the first few days/weeks are a bit of a blur with a newborn and there's enough to be doing without having to think about boil washes for your pants.

There is something so comforting when you haven't slept, brushed your hair and are covered in baby sick/poo/colostrum etc when you can reach for a brand new clean pair of knickers.

Tesco ultra slim maternity towels were amazing last time. Really comfy.

Tealer81 · 17/04/2018 18:29

Thong??!! Crikey! I couldn't wear those before getting preggers let alone after 😂😂

I bought cheap cotton granny pants... But nothing beat those disposable mesh ones from the hospital! Really hold the pads in place!

newmumwithquestions · 17/04/2018 21:38

Against the flow here but I was glad of my disposable pants. For baby 1 anyway. I bled a lot and was kept in hospital for observation as a result. I got through a lot of pads which didn’t really contain it properly and was very glad to be able to throw disposables away rather than having to take pants soaked with blood on home to wash. (Sorry if that’s TMI!)

Haha I bought disposable knickers in quite a large size. When it came to wearing them after enduring rotational forceps and an episiotomy they were too small! As if childbrth had not traumatised me enough, I also had to accept that my arse was the size of Jupiter. Get yourself some cheap comfy cotton knickers and maternity pads. You need all the comfort you can get :-)

wfrances · 17/04/2018 23:12

black knickers and pj bottoms
as long as youve got maternity pads you should be fine.

Cottipus · 19/04/2018 09:24

Towards the end of my pregnancy I bought the multipack massive full briefs in black as I wanted knickers that went over my bump to give some support. I went up 3 sizes!

These were absolutely fine to use after birth and for a few weeks after. I had a pack of disposables (as recommended by all the hospital bag lists) but as PP said the sizing was inconsistent and they weren’t comfy at all.
