What were you wearing (if anything) when giving birth?

I didn't want to be stark naked last time, made me feel quite exposed/vulnerable and I ended up giving birth in an old dressing gown which I had to hold up around me.
Am hoping for a water birth but in case not does anyone have any suggestions of what to wear which gives a bit of privacy but won't get in the way?
Are eg old, big T shirts any good?

big nightshirt - same as big t shirt really.

Worked well as did not feel over exposed but easy access to all necessary areas!

SNOWBall4girlz · 07/05/2007 23:25

a big night shirt ?
or shortnight dress?
worn both

hana · 07/05/2007 23:25

wore a tank top and knickers - they came off when things got moving
honestly, your inhibitions just go out the window -

thequeenofcontradiction · 07/05/2007 23:26

I wore a plain black t shirt, fairly close fitting as baggy clothes make me sweaty. It did the trick and I was as comfortable as I could have been.

butterflywings · 07/05/2007 23:27

I didn't have a very large t-shirt so I searched every shop and charity shop in my town and the shire town, but I had no luck

I did, however, manage to find a really big baggy nightie and that was perfect.

It was easy to move around in and covered me from top to mid-thigh.

Good luck!

Pannacotta · 07/05/2007 23:28

Mine didnt last time, ie I really wanted something to wear, not keen on being minus clothes with people I dont know and this didnt change even in the middle of giving birth!
Will find some old large t shirts I think....

First time: nasty hospital gown with Laura Ashley style flowers

Second time: Dh's band t-shirt in many xxxs large!

I would like to say that wearing something slightly more 'me' made me feel empowered, but honestly wasn't even aware of it by the end!

But yes big t-shirt was perfectly practical. Or friend swore by cheap t-shirt style nightie from Evans.

themoon66 · 07/05/2007 23:28

a very thin tiny nightie from Mothercare.. although it was hard to tell what it was coz it was rucked up round my neck most of the time.

only knicks came off should have said!

Pannacotta · 07/05/2007 23:31

Don't really care if I look awful or not but just think I might feel the need to cover up a bit, like my privacy even though I know giving birth not the most private of events!!

Bizarrely a lovely white cotten night shirt from M&S. It was cheap and, due to birth circumstances, it didn't get soiled.

ravenAK · 07/05/2007 23:32

oh & hospital staff seemed quite pleased I passed on the gimp gown for dd.

With ds I had a terrifying midwife & just meekly put it on when she barked at me to do so - but you really do not have to.

Pannacotta · 07/05/2007 23:33

Not sure am brave enough to go for a white nightie!
Was thinking more along the lines of dark manky t shirt nicked from DH - or cheap as chips from Primark!

Big nightshirt from Primark, £4 to you mate.

Cheapest baby-related thing I bought

Sunyshineymummy · 07/05/2007 23:39

Cheapest I found and still lovely.

misdee · 07/05/2007 23:42

dd1 old nightie, dd2 i didnt take mt top off i was wearing till i gave borth, i went in in labour and didnt get much time really.

dd3 was wearing hospital gown under my own dressing gown, was much more confortable as was loose and not done up at the back.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/05/2007 23:42

Not a stitch. Twice in birthing unit and once at home.

I did buy a cheap and very large mans t-shirt to take to hospital but never used it. So nick one of your DHs or go shopping!

Busybean · 07/05/2007 23:42

I'v always worn a short nightie in hospital, but planning home water birth this time.

Hoping the "deep blue, nest-like environment" of La Bassine will allow me to be naked without a care

MKG · 07/05/2007 23:49

Hospital gown.
