Holymoly321 · 27/04/2007 13:04

Am thinking of trying for a VBAC with second baby, but am terrified of giving birth. How much would a doula cost? Has anyone tried hynotherapy to get through preg and labour? Did it help?

doula uk
have a look on there for doulas in your area, prices do vary !

hertsnessex · 27/04/2007 17:26

chk out doula uk, (as lulu said)

there are doulas who are also hypnobirthing practitioners (sp?!) and others who know how it works, what cds you can use etc (im in the last group!)

there is a great book re vbac you can buy from aims.org.uk - also chk out there website as it has some fab vbac info.

dont be terrified, every labour and birth are different, if you go into this one with a really positive outlook it will help.

Smiling,
There's a few doulas on here, where abouts do you live, as one of us may beable to help at least with names etc!

Holymoly321 · 27/04/2007 20:24

I live in Northampton - any advice gratefully received! What kind of price do they charge and what are the benefits of having a doula?

lulumama · 27/04/2007 20:29

oh...too far from me

well, apart from around 50 % less chance of a c.s or instrumental delivery, shorter labour and more satisfaction in the whole experience,,,,what else??

seriously, a doula can be your one on one emotional support , find out useful information , be there for you, to support you , whatever you decide , not to tell you what to do , but to empower you to make the decisions that are comfortable for you, to help you get the best birth experience you can get......

a trainee can charge up to £150, and fully qualified ones vary ...

where is northampton????

MKG · 27/04/2007 21:31

smiling,

I haven't had a doula, but I'm a big fan of hypnobirthing. "Hypnobirthing:The Mongan Method" by Marie Mongan is a great book, and a CD comes with it. I have to say that with hypnobirthing I pretty much slept through labor and delivery. i'm told that while pushing ds out I would wake up to push, and then close my eyes and sleep. The only part I remember is the end when his head came out.

CorrieDale · 27/04/2007 21:43

My doula (I'm in the West Midlands btw) is £450. I interviewed another who charged £300. So far, she's been great, very positive and supportive (I'm planning a home birth because the htought of giving birth in hospital scares the crap out of me.)

I too have bought the Marie Mongan book - I didn't want to spend tons on a course, being a not very touchy-feely visual person. The book is interesting but the CD is knock-out! Literally! I don't sleep well in pregnancy, but the CD can generally put me out, even if my restless leg syndrome is starting up. Frankly, it's worth the money just for this, even if I can't put it to good effect in labour. I'm getting DH to record a couple of the visualisations for me so I can practise them, too.

I also have the Birthing From Within book and Stand and Deliver. Both details good ways of coping with pain. Don't know how effective they're going to be, but at least I feel as though I'm doing everything I can to prepare myself for this, and that in itself gives me confidence.

Whoops.

Klaw · 27/04/2007 23:56

Smiling, haven't time to post much just now,

Don't be terrified, although I do understand how you feel. You have had great replies so far and I can also send you loads of links to do your own research on VBAC, if you want. Email me at klaw at macmail dot com (no spaces) if you'd like.

Many women have successful VBACs, VBA2Cs and even VBA3Cs. The trick seems to be that you are determined, educate yourself about childbirth and make informed decisions.

Having a Doula should help you enormously! I have heard anecdotal evidence that hypnobirthing is also very helpful and have a copy of the VBAC CDs but haven't actually listened to them yet.

I can also recommend quite a few books that I wish I'd read before my emCS.....

But Lulumama is here more often than I am so she will probably give you faster replies to any questions!

vixma · 28/04/2007 00:12

Wow, they can do that now....really....does it work?

MadeForIt · 28/04/2007 00:22

is that cost per day?

hertsnessex · 28/04/2007 08:18

that cost is prob for 2 or so an visits, the birth and a postnatal visit.

cx

lulumama · 28/04/2007 08:24

i include phone and email contact with my package, as imagine others do to

also i find out information, about specific worries or concerns, good websites or books to look at, and just general support !

also, your doula is on call from 38 - 42 weeks, and will be there for the birth, however long it takes!

a doula can be flexible and will adapt to each lady, as each woman's needs are different

cheritongirl · 28/04/2007 09:40

hi smiling, sorry you are terrifed - would definitely recommend a doula to help with this (!) i had one when i had my first LO at home a few months ago and she cost £500 - this included 2 long antenatal sessions, the birth and a postnatal visit, as well as lots of worried phone calls and emails from me! She was very experienced and wise and may well have done hypnobirthing too (didn't ask abou that.)
She is based in the East Mids and may well cover Northampton, the website is www.birthwisdom.co.uk (hope i am allowed to post that, sorry if i am not MN!)
£500 seems like a lot of money (it was for us) but in the big scheme of things it is worth every penny IMHO. All the best to you

MadeForIt · 28/04/2007 10:49

wow, i think that is actually really reasonable! I was thinking that was cost per day! I had a pretty awful birth 1st time around and considering trying for another, so this would be a definite option.

Sorry, not my thread i know! But V.Interesting all the same!

lulumama · 28/04/2007 11:25

read this link , if you have suffered any birth trauma

J20BABY · 28/04/2007 11:40

MKG and corriedale ~ can i ask when you got the book and cd from please?

MKG · 28/04/2007 12:31

J20BABY,

I got mine when I took the pre-natal hypnobirthing class, but I've seen it in bookstores here in the US.

This link may help you

Hypnobirthing

J20BABY · 28/04/2007 15:14

Yhank you mkg

mghealth · 02/06/2007 13:24

Smiling,

Hi I am a Doula in Northampton. If you would like to have a chat then please contact me or go to www.mummiesbirthbuddy.co.uk

Hope you can feel calm about your birth.

I had a colleague support us for our VBAC baby born in 2005. It was brilliant.

Best wishes Claire

yogimum · 02/06/2007 14:17

A friend of mine had an independent midwife with her through her hospital birth. Not sure how much it would cost? Probably a lot more than a doula.

yogimum · 02/06/2007 14:18

I could let you borrow my hypnobirthing book and cd if like.

DaisyMOO · 02/06/2007 15:10

Hi smiling, when are you due? I'm about to do my training to be a doula (although I have doula'd for women in the past unofficially) and after that I will have to doula as a trainee for 5 women, when I will only be charging expenses. I live in Cambridgeshire, so will probably be able to cover Northampton. I've had a VBAC myself, so I'm particularly interested in supporting other women in this situation. Let me know if you're interested, but I do of course understand if you'd prefer to have someone more experienced.

DaisyMOO · 02/06/2007 15:11

PS Used hypnobirthing for my VBAC and it was really helpful.
