What is a fast birth?

I am wondering what is normal for firsttime mums and whether my birth was fast/slow/normal?
I was induced after PROM, 2hr45min first stage, 38min second stage and 10min third stage.
What are your experiences? Am I likely to go quicker with bub 2?

first and third were standard (24 hours and 8 hours)
With the middle one I went from 'nothing is happening, you are 2cm and not having any contractions' I was on a monitor as had gone in for induction- I will go and get someone to talk to you about drugs.

They left the room, I got a sudden urge to be sick/poo. Ran to a bathroom, baby fell 'down' inside me, they arrived back 7 minutes later to me holding onto his head sat on the loo.

I was induced early with my first and it took them 3 days, should have used DHL Grin

Second birth much faster but later on at 39 weeks and not induced.

I'm glad it was DHL, even glass things marked fragile glass here get chucked 6 foot over the wall with Hermes. Though didn't your DH wonder what you were doing breathing heavily in the kitchen with the DHL man?

Induced with first - 4 hours from start to finish.

Waters broke with DS2 and was 45 minutes. 15 minutes in the hospital, just about had time to get undressed and was being told to push Shock
I lay there afterwards going 'I've just had a baby'!!!! I preferred the first birth as it progressed in manageable stages where the second was a mad dash to the hospital screeching at DH not to stop at the traffic lights to be handed a baby less than 20 minutes later. DH nearly missed it as he was parking the car and getting the bags.....

1st 5hrs from waters breaking, but only 3hrs from start of contractions

2nd 2hrs from waters, 1.5hrs from start of contractions

mizu · 18/01/2018 07:14

1st 12 days over. Induced. 12 hour labour.
2nd 10 days over. Induced. 6 hour labour.

Impressed people know how long they were in labour for each stage, I have no idea!

Hayze80 · 18/01/2018 09:52

First, 6 hours stage 2 - 1.5hours
2nd, 4 hours, stage 2 -16 mins
3rd, 2.5 hours, stage 2 - 3 mins

The 3rd took me by surprise. Arrived at the hospital 8cm dilated. 10 mins later shouted that he was coming. They took a look and the head was out on the next contraction. 1 more and Baby was there. 14mins in the hospital. Had a natural 3rd stage which took about 40 mins, then home in time for dinner. Considering a home birth for the next one. Nearest hospital is 45mins away.

My labour was 51 hours from waters breaking to delivery. All started naturally and ended up with induction, episiotomy and forceps. Little one is now 14 weeks old and I'd do it all again (but very much hope that the next is quicker to arrive!) x

Total labour with DD1 from first contraction to delivery of placenta was 3 hours 10 minutes. With DD2, my water broke, but I didn't go into labour for several more hours and from first contraction to delivery of placenta was an hour and a half. Lots of stitches with both of them, due to being narrow across the hips and having fairly big babies.

I decided against more babies after that, but it was nothing to do with giving birth - more to do with the practicalities of having 2 children when not being particularly maternal.

Fartootiredtobeawake · 18/01/2018 10:34

Wow, I’m really amazed at speedy births. I was induced at 40 weeks on medical advice, went it on due date on the Monday. On the Wednesday morning my waters broke, but labour wasn’t progressing told to walk around. Still nothing on Thursday, at 18.00 they told me as I wasn’t progressing my baby needed to come out in an by emergency c section as my waters had gone more than 24 hours previously.

GreyMorning · 18/01/2018 10:40

My first was fast, my second was even faster, not sure of exact timings but no.2, despite getting stuck, arrived an hour after we got to hospital, I arrived fully dilated when I arrived. It took all of us by surprise, a Home birth would have been wrong for us as both times the fast labour has distressed the babies.

My waters haven't broken in advance either time, second time I was happily getting ready to leave the house to go to hospital as contractions had been 13 mins apart about 20 mins earlier when I'd called and BOOM, felt the urge to push, narrow windy bumpy country lanes are not fun when you're in labour!

We are stopping at 2 but if we planned a 3rd I'd have to ask for an elective C section as it could have easily ended in disaster.

GreyMorning · 18/01/2018 10:41

Dc3 - under 30 minutes, delivered by DHL in the kitchen.

😂brilliant, I might get mine from DHL too!

HappyLollipop · 18/01/2018 10:46

My DS was born in 1hr57min! They were shocked how quick it all was and told me if I ever have another to call in as soon as I have a contraction Grin

Quartz2208 · 18/01/2018 10:57

DD was an elective C section due to placenta praevia. DS was 2 hours from start to finish it was quick. I was relieved that DS was child number 2 as I am not sure I could cope (he got distressed as well as it was so quick)

ToftheB · 19/01/2018 06:59

Wow. I have found my people!

I had my first baby last month, waters broke but nothing happened for 24hrs so I had to be induced. I was told it would take ages - they were going to re-check my cervix after 24hrs and then give me something to start contractions. I was on a ward with women who had been being induced for days with no obvious progress.

Within an hour I was in a lot of pain, and it was coming in waves that felt like contractions. I was told that it was pre labour and that I could have some pain relief when actual labour started - like a previous poster, I was terrified because I obviously couldn’t handle pre labour so couldn’t even begin to think how bad it was going to get.

After about 90 mins I was fairly sure I was having contractions, but they still thought I was just making a fuss! Eventually someone hooked me up to a baby heart rate monitor to put my mind at ease...baby’s heart rate was dropping with every contraction - the emergency cord was pulled and a dr (eventually!) checked my cervix. I was fully dilated and my babies head was visible! They told me to push and he was born 3 mins later.

From start to finish, the whole thing took less than 3 hours. It was better than a long drawn out labour - but I did find being repeatedly told I wasn’t yet in labour properly terrifying. I really wish I’d read this thread before giving birth.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 19/01/2018 21:55

DC1 = 5hours 20
Dc2= 2 hours 30
Dc3= 1 hour 15

All of these where from first contraction to baby in arms.

DailyMaileatmyshit · 20/01/2018 01:36

My labour was actually 21 hours, but they thought it would be much, much quicker as my contractions immediately started fast and strong, 3 in 10 from the get go and lasting 45-90 seconds each. They never got closer together or more painful (thankfully) but I was denied pain relief as it was 'nearly over' and 'it wouldn't have time to kick in'. Whilst I can appreciate I speedy labour could be alarming and traumatic I certainly didn't get the build up people expect of a longer labour.

passmethewineplease · 20/01/2018 01:54

DHL Grin😂

My first was 4 hours from waters breaking, she would've come sooner but she got stuck in the U bend so had to have keilands forceps.

Second was 2 hours in a birth pool. Grin

Third was way too quick, woke up at 4.30 she was here by 5.. we made it to the hospital with 2 minutes to spare thankfully.

Ahh the joys.

Love a good birth story.
