What is a fast birth?

ladybug92 · 14/12/2017 11:47

I am wondering what is normal for firsttime mums and whether my birth was fast/slow/normal?
I was induced after PROM, 2hr45min first stage, 38min second stage and 10min third stage.
What are your experiences? Am I likely to go quicker with bub 2?

I was induced..pessary..

My labour was 2 hours 19 minutes from when waters broke.
.

rednsparkley · 14/12/2017 22:30

My first was just under 3 hrs from 1st contraction to "hello baby"
No2 was 90mins for the same
No3 was also 90 mins for the same
No4 was 40 mins - again for the same

I had No1 in hospital but the other three were very positive and well supported home deliveries.

I have no idea what the various stages were but I guess all 4 count as fast labours Grin

Isitwinteryet · 14/12/2017 23:32

I can't believe how fast all of your labours were! From contractions to delivery I was in labour with my first for 45 hours! Shock

sycamore54321 · 14/12/2017 23:34

Hi OP, it sounds definitely on the faster side but I wouldn't have thought it is fast as to cause concerns in future pregnancies.

For my first, induction with two rounds of gel morning and late afternoon, nothing happened at all. Waters then popped spontaneously on the stroke of midnight, contractions began shortly afterwards and baby delivered by ventouse around 4.30. I was told to hold off on pushing for a while as the heart rate was dipping with pushes and so I was asked not to push while waiting for the consultant. A tightly wrapped cord several loops around the neck turned out to be the cause, after a safe delivery by ventouse.

My second induced at 37w0. No gels, drip started at 9.00 am and I didn't feel a thing until my waters were broken at 1.30 pm. Baby born less than two hours later, with a few minutes of pushing (three contractions-worth).

Cakescakescakes · 14/12/2017 23:35

I had two inductions so 6-8 hours first stages. But my second stages were 4 mins and 2 mins. Apparently I really know how to push!

DragonMamma · 14/12/2017 23:39

First labour was B2b an was recorded as 6hrs45. Second stage was 30 mins or so.

Second was a planned HB. Recorded as 3 odd hours with a 10 mins second stage.

Shinygoldbauble · 14/12/2017 23:40

My first was around 4 hours from first minor twinge to delivery, second was around 2.5 hours.
Like a previous poster said it happened so fast that i wasn't aware of distinct stages.
I have often thought that of all the things people told me about childbirth and warned me about no one ever mentioned the possibility of it happening so quickly the first time around.

KatnissMellark · 14/12/2017 23:42

I was induced with a pessary and nothing happened for 24 hours, then when it did start, took about 3.5 hours to go from 3-4cm dilated to baby out- does that count as quick?

FucksakeCuntingFuckingTwats · 14/12/2017 23:43

1hr ten with first, 45 mins with second. Woke up with my body pushing with my third.

minipie · 14/12/2017 23:47

GrinGrin at "delivered by DHL" sounds nice and painless!

Tbh since you were induced first time it may not be a great guide to how second time will go.

I had PPROM both times, DD2 was pretty fast - I woke at 3am when my waters broke, went to hospital about 4.30, spent ages in the bloody waiting room and triage room (another midwife who didn't believe it was moving quickly...!) and she was born at 6am, just after I got into a labour room.

PinkAvocado · 14/12/2017 23:49

From 0cm to delivery of the placenta-15 minutes. It was frightening.

OlennasWimple · 14/12/2017 23:52

Better delivered by DHL than Yodel or Hermes - they would probably leave your baby behind next door's wheely bin Wink

Ninjakittysmells · 15/12/2017 00:05

I had a fast labour too - 4 hours from waking up feeling a bit weird, to baby in arms. I actually second what @overrunwithlego says, it was actually horrendous. I couldnt get to grips with what was happening at all, and ended up going into shock. I genuinely thought that me trying not to push / 10cm level pain was early stages, no one believed I was in labour and I had no time for pain relief of any kind.

I had that thing where they go over your labour with you afterwards when you have PTSD, and the midwife said going forward if I had any other births I would be able to get induced at the hospital 2 weeks before due date, just to ensure it was managed (can’t give birth at home for medical reasons)

Batterseapark · 15/12/2017 05:42

"@ladybug92" My waters had broken first the day before so there was a 24 hours "deadline" regarding higher risk of infection.
So, I was fully dilated (under epidural). Staff followed protocol which is to wait and see if baby descends more. They help you onto a left lateral position. Unfortunately for me, after an hour (the recommended time for first labour under epidural) there was no progress. The obstetrician was called in. She tried the ventouse but it failed. A second (more senior) obstetrician came in and said they'd try the ventouse again. It failed. They were left with no other option than episiotomy and forceps. My baby was safely delivered. By contrast I started haemorrhaging and suffered serious injuries.
I'm glad your birth was OK. It does sound like a "good" experience.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 15/12/2017 07:13

Isitwinteryet, my first was a two-and-a-half-day epic ending in an unceremonious hoiking-out with ventouse :) Middle one was just under 5h from waking up with the first contraction. It wasn't the speed that was the problem there but the misleading lack of intensity - all very nice and manageable until the very end - I only went to hospital (on public transport, FFS) because I had a monitoring appt for being overdue anyway. I was 9cm when I got there and he arrived half an hour later.

My speedy third was an induction - gel in several hours previously, nothing nothing nothing, then I started getting a pattern of twingey contractions for an hour or so. When they said I was 2cm I was rolling my eyes and thinking I could settle in for a long afternoon. We set off on a walk round the hospital and bam. As dh was helping me back into the labour ward a doctor came the other way and asked if he could help. I still feel guilty for roaring NO at him Blush We just about got back into the ward and me onto a bed when she arrived. I felt the waters bulging (they never went) and thought if I pushed I could break them and help things along. Out she came in the caul. The doctor who had come running to help me onto the bed (and looked about 12) was in shock.

Anditstartsagain · 15/12/2017 07:22

Ds1 induction 19 hours all in delivered with forceps in theatre.
Ds2 4 days slow labour then induced as he stopped moving much then 28 hours from induction to c section.

I have no idea about individual times I couldn't care less after a while.

15 mins?! Shock

PinkAvocado · 15/12/2017 08:10

Mrs Pringle-yep. It was really scary. I had no first stage at all then two pushes and a baby (straight to intensive care). Thankfully I was being monitored in hospital at the time.

MrsPringles · 15/12/2017 09:20

Oh wow, that must have been scary 😘

Argeles · 15/12/2017 09:33

1 hour 30 minutes for my first birth, but it would’ve been even quicker if I could’ve got the hang of pushing! I just couldn’t do it.

My family are currently betting on how quick my second labour will be.

Despite attending all my midwife appointments and NHS birth preparation classes, no one told me that you have to push long and hard through your arse like you’re shitting. When the midwives were telling me how to do it, I just couldn’t for ages - might explain why I take a long time on the toilet...

Booboostwo · 15/12/2017 10:45

Delivering home alone is high risk for the baby and the mother but my friend didn't plan it that way! The first time she was aiming for the hospital but the baby arrived so fast she realised there was no point trying to make it to the hospital 30 minutes away so she called an ambulance. The baby still arrived before the ambulance - she and her DH had a bit of a shock. Fearing a repeat they arranged a home birth but again the baby arrived before the MW.

Aki99 · 15/12/2017 13:15

3 hours start to finish. Came on naturally and only just made it to hospital. My waters never broke - they had to break them

Aki99 · 15/12/2017 13:16

First birth and our bags were still sat in the car when baby arrived(brought food/ipads/books etc)

Aki99 · 15/12/2017 13:19

I had no idea what times were for the separate stages - I went from feeling a bit weird to being in agony within minutes - shouting at otherhalf to take me to hospital - too busy ringing the labour line to be told they would ring back when there was a midwife free - fucking useless line

Isitwinteryet · 15/12/2017 13:43

HeteronormativeHaybales, not fun is it! I was in labour for a whole weekend! 😂
