my original research method is flawed by its biased title...so is there anyone out there who didn't see a consultant? I didn;t for dd2. (barely saw a midwife either, but that's another story...)

no consultants in two births with baby two i asked for a home birth, but midwife said after complications with baby one if i wanted home birth i would need to see consultant and she would say no! so i didn't bother

naughtymummy · 10/02/2007 21:06

No had midwife led care for both so no named consultant.

hewlettsdaughter · 10/02/2007 21:48

No consultants. Two home births.

Indith · 11/02/2007 11:55

A what what? Midwives all the way.

pupuce · 11/02/2007 11:59

You are not meant to see a consultant in any pregnancy if you have no particular problem.
In the UK the care for low risk/problem free pregnancy is midwife led.

eidsvold · 12/02/2007 03:35

saw consultant three times - standard for low risk pregnancies here in Aus. Most of my appts are carried out at the Gp's. I am doing what is called shared care.

See consultant after 20 week scan, around 30 weeks and then will see him again at 36 weeks.

I may see him for my c-section - but it may not be him doing the surgery. He did not do the surgery for dd2.

ghosty · 12/02/2007 05:16

I don't think I saw one for DS (born in UK) ... definitely didn't see on during the pregnancy and the bloke who came at 4am to do my emergency C/Section after a 55 hour labour may or may not have been a consultant. I think he may have been a registrar. I definitely didn't have a 'named' consultant.
With DD (born in NZ) I saw the consultant at week 40 for a scan, then when I was in labour he was the one to give the final decision for a c/s ... but it was still a registrar who performed the op.

started seeing consultants first time round in UK after being admitted with suspected pre-eclampsia at about 33 weeks (came to nothing)

the one I saw every time except one was worse than useless and TBH I was really pissed off to be transferred away from the midwives. he had no interest in my or my pregnancy and could barely remember who I was (or even read the notes properly). And was pretty rude as well.

AND when he came round to see me the morning of my birth, he told me all about how I was about to be induced in that boring we've-got-no-interest-in-you-but-we-have-all-the-answers-AND-the-power way that some doctors have perfected. Finally managed to get a word in edgeways to inform him that I'd already had 2 doses of prostin since the night before, as presumably he'd know if he'd bothered to find out....git

this time round (in NZ, moved here at 18 weeks) at nearly 39 weeks, have only seen the midwife (and the same one all the time plus meeting her backup) all the way through and it's BLISS. Probably contributing to why this pregnancy is going much better!

fuzzywuzzy · 12/02/2007 07:42

I never saw mine during the pre natal appointments, but he did appear to carry out the (failed ventouse) and then forcep assisted delivery, seemed to be a rather nice chap, but then I was rather high on gas and air and lack of sleep at the time of the meeting (also he was standing at completely the wrong end to have a conversation).....
Second time straight forward birth and saw no one but the MW's.

pooka · 12/02/2007 07:44

I didn't see a consultant either time. Just my group practice midwives.

mrschiefy · 18/02/2007 22:11

I didn't see a consultant despite being an older (turned 35 during pregnancy and suddenly had a label!) first time mum ... and being above the growth curve throughout. And I never saw a hospital midwife as had home birth. ;)

adath · 19/02/2007 13:26

I have never in 2 pregnancies met my assigned consultant at all everyone I know seems to have but I have never.
I did see a dr once for about 2 seconds when I had an app. wit mw but he read something never said a word to me mutterd to mw and left.

itsmeNDP · 19/02/2007 13:28

I had a named Consultant whom I never met - that would be because he retired 3 months before I conceived lol

I did see a registrar briefly during delivery. She muttered about a ventouse and gave me a time limit for my second stage. The lovely midwife told me to put that out of my mind and that she was damn sure I wouldn't be seeing the ventouse - she was right

I had an uncomplicated pregnancy and fairly straightforward deilvery so my care was midwife-led. I don't think seeing more of medical staff of any grade would have added anything to my experience.

yomellamoHelly · 19/02/2007 14:29

Saw 3 different ones with 1st pg and 2 with 2nd. (History dvts.) All regularly. Had very little to add to the whole process tbh and simply repeated what midwives had said. Feel the number of midwife appointments could have been drastically cut back on as well though tbh. Don't feel I was any better off for all the medical care. I trust my own instincts and would have sought help if I had felt I needed it.
Didn't see any consultants during labour (easy births), but did see one of them after both labours a couple of times with both. Again could happily have passed on these.

Tinker · 19/02/2007 14:30

Didn't for no 2, not sure for no 1, don't think I did.
