hands up if you didn't see a consultant in pregnancy or childbirth...

my original research method is flawed by its biased title...so is there anyone out there who didn't see a consultant? I didn;t for dd2. (barely saw a midwife either, but that's another story...)

I didn't with DS1, saw the same highly obnoxious, ruse and patronising beeatch female Consultant loads with Ds2, she was very ineffectual and my worst fears were confirmed! Was advised to complain about her by a fair few midwives

Skyler · 07/02/2007 22:04

No, no consultant seen here with dd1.
Saw one with dd2 but only as I was being induced and he had to examine me .
Oh and he talked me through one appt after a scan. That was in Cyprus though and I guarantee I wouldn't have seen one here in the UK.

trice · 07/02/2007 22:05

a what? home birth me.

elliott · 07/02/2007 22:05

I didn't because I was booked for a midwife led home birth - not sure what your survey is trying to get at?

hunkermunker · 07/02/2007 22:07

I didn't with DS1 (actually, I might have done to discuss induction when he was overdue - wasn't actually induced though), but I did with DS2 (had gestational diabetes with DS2 and the consultants all wanted to have their say, it seemed!).

hatwoman · 07/02/2007 22:11

I just want some ammunition to support my argument with someone in rl that midwives are every bit as important as obstetricians and consultants. (I am taking it as read that virtually (?) none of us did without a midwife, but I should imagine a fair few managed without a consultant)

I did unfortunately. But wish I hadn't during labour

BUT I was assigned this consultant all through my pregnancy and despite ten appointments I NEVER met him during the antenatal period. I asked at each appt where he was and eventually a house officer sheepishly said: 'actually he doesn't do the antenatal clinics'.

'Umm, so why is he my named consultant then?' I asked.

'It makes patients feel more confident if they have a named consultant', I was told.

When I did meet him at the delivery, turned out he was an absolute tosser so I guess I should be grateful I got nine months without meeting him!

GreatGooglyMoogly · 07/02/2007 22:13

I didn't with ds1, and with ds2 I went once as I was worried he was quite big and that I wouldn't be able to get a waterbirth at the birth centre I wanted.

roisin · 07/02/2007 22:15

3 births. Didn't see a consultant for any of them.

DrumMum · 07/02/2007 22:20

I didn't... with my 2.. I thought you only saw a consultant if there was concerns for the baby or the mother?

gingernut · 07/02/2007 22:39

I didn't with either of my 2 (although had 2 a/n appointments at the hospital when pg with ds2, where I was told I would see consultant but never did, just saw registrars).

hana · 07/02/2007 22:40

only for one of three - complications wiht that one

wummin · 07/02/2007 22:50

I dont think the consultants are necessary and the emphasis on them takes away from proper midwifery care. I never seen my consultant and I refused to even go for ant natal checks at the hospital. I have only 1 child and I hired a doula for a natural homebirth. I had to fight for it all the way. Midwifes attended but only because they said it was the "law" they be there. they tried to prevent my partner from entering the pool to deliver with me but because it was a water birth it was hands off!!

No consultants with either of my births - one hospital, one home birth, both midwife led care.

Hello. First 2 pregnancies and births were completely midwife led - tbh didnt even think about involving doctors, or going to my GP to confirm pg etc. I was placed under a Consultant for 3rd due to very serious probs during ds2 birth. I only saw the Consultant 3 times in all and ended up having lovely midwife led normal delivery third time around anyway. HTH

cheritongirl · 10/02/2007 20:07

hi - i didn't see a consultant at all during my first (and only so far!) pg or at birth -which was at home. I only saw a junior doctor in hospital when i had to go in to be re-hydrated coz i had hyperemesis and was vomiting for Britain..

when i had to see a male GP for my postnatal check it felt weird after having been cared for only by female midwives etc for months!

Jelley · 10/02/2007 20:24

I saw m/w and gp for dd1, and the same for dd2. (Did see consulatant after her birth (crash section) and saw him once when pg with ds (VBAC)

MerlinsBeard · 10/02/2007 20:28

i didn't with either of mine. i was booked for midwife led and only ever saw midwives.

GreedyGecko · 10/02/2007 20:40

I didn't. Don't you only see one if there's a problem?

BettySpaghetti · 10/02/2007 20:41

No I didn't with DD ( with DS I saw one for all of 2 mins following a scan for low-lying placenta and a bleed)

Fillyjonk · 10/02/2007 20:59

never seen one in 2 births

didn't know you did for routine births, though i was booked for hbs both times ans ended up in birthing unit

WideWebWitch · 10/02/2007 21:01
