What was this pain?

I'm 40+6 had a sweep on Tuesday and registrar said I'd be back later or the following day because I was already 2cms dilated-however nothing yet, found the sweep really painful and had really bad period type pains for a good 6 hours afterwards. After some 'get the baby out' bd last night I'm convinced the semen (not being too rampant DH is very gentle)sent me into the same type of constant pain for another 5-6 hours-wouldn't describe them as b/h contractions because it was there all the time but it did hurt like hell. Any ideas what was happening?

well, the love making and the sperm can all trigger the release of the two hormones that can trigger labour....prostoglandins & oxytocin... which can lead to lots of contractions

if you had constant pain, can you describe it? not period pains, or BH....any fluid loss or show....?

SHHHH · 03/02/2007 17:03

Thanks Lulumama the pain was like period pains, low down at the front, can't say I've felt any b/h and no show or fluid loss. Had the same type of pain on Wed and Thurs but only for about 20-30 mins nothing I would describe as a contraction IYKWIM.

And thanks shhhh just been reading your sweep or not to sweep thread, I was exactly the same as you post sweep, brain telling me to keep mobile but body wanting to go to bed.

maybe it is baby engaging? if you are concerned at all, give the midwife a call, hope you are holding your baby very soon x

fairyandbump · 03/02/2007 19:10

Thanks I think i'll stick to rasberry leaf tea and my bouncing ball etc but am now very scared of the real prostaglandins they'll be using when they induce me. Also, do you know why they induce you at night? I've got to go in at 7pm and be induced at 10pm I'm concerned that if it happens straight away I've already lost a nights sleep.

Fairyandbump - the reason they do that is that most people take more than one dose of prostin to get them going. So they give the first dose with 10pm drug rounds. The second dose may be given 6 hours later or at morning drug rounds (usually 8am) and it is this second dose, or the third one afterwards which does the trick for many women. When I discussed this with my Dr, she tried to sell it to me as an opportunity to get a good night's sleep before the baby comes. My response was "have you ever tried to sleep on a hospital ward?!"

Good luck with it all - I'm sure it will all be fine.

fairyandbump · 03/02/2007 19:21

Thanks i take it that DH will be sent home for the night then?

lulumama · 03/02/2007 19:21

has your induction date been booked?

our hospital does inductions in the morning....

also, you will be monitored after prostin has been administered...i would mention to the MW that you are concerned about over stimulation .....it might well be you go spontaneously before then

or if you do get induced, you might not need prostin if you are already dilated enough to have your waters broken

Plibble · 03/02/2007 19:42

At my local hospital unless you are in established labour you are on the ante-natal ward, so partners have to go home.

lulumama · 03/02/2007 20:07

same at mine.......

SHHHH · 03/02/2007 20:17

see thats one thing that worries me if I need an induction..I imagine a situation where medication is given at night (or whenever) and they expect it to take a while so send dh off home for me to then go into labour and he's rushing to get back....

Although atm I don't think I could care less if dh was there or not. Today everything he is doing is winding me up. Its as though he seems hell bent in p1*s1ng me off..... I just wish I could bugger off and have this baby on my own.

lulumama · 03/02/2007 20:18

go and have a bath, light some candles and breathe...and visualise......take another flapjack !

SHHHH · 03/02/2007 20:24

visualise what lm..?? Killing him slowly while enjoying it.?!

Just off to make a brew to have with the flap jack..mmmmmmm.

lulumama · 03/02/2007 20:34

no !!! the birth !!! or whatever you like, if it makes you feel better ! LOL!

SHHHH · 03/02/2007 20:39

yeah I think my suggestion will make me feel happier .!

fairyandbump · 03/02/2007 20:45

Yes I'm booked in for Wed 7th at 7pm I can't sleep before 1-2am anyway so the thought of being woken at 8am Shhhh also have visions of it happening in middle of night, middle of ward and things happening too fast for DH to get there or staff being too busy to phone him or him not even hearing the phone....need I go on ? I'm not a mad pg woman honest.

OP posts:
lulumama · 03/02/2007 20:48

tis a worry...sneak your phone into the ward !!

SHHHH · 03/02/2007 21:03

good suggestion lm..!!! must admit I did have my mob when in with dd as I wasn't prepared to pay their call charges.!! also more privacy by texting.

lulumama · 03/02/2007 21:05

my Dh was texting from behind the bed as i pushed !! a friend congratulated me on being so together ! i had to break it to her i was a screaming harridan at that point !

fairyandbump · 03/02/2007 21:06

Will do - think I'll take some flapjack too!

OP posts:
SHHHH · 03/02/2007 21:08

yeah I also remember dh texting people while I was labouring..before baby had even arrived !! did annoy me sightly as I wanted his full attention !! Men 'eh ! They have an easy task and they appear bored...BORED...I would give my right arm to sit there supporting while my dw was in labour and I would never text ANYONE lol..! .
