I'm term+10 today and being induced tomorrow, and starting to get a little nervous! Tell me it'll all be ok, please

(Oh and you can tell me that having a new baby with a 19m old ds is a breeze, too!)

induction wss not something that bothered me at all. had a membrane seep once, which is just like a smear, and a needle up me to break my wters, but because i was on gs and air at the time, didnt feel anything.
a 19 month age gap is hard work. becuse in essence you hve two babies. get in all the help you can. parents, mil, neigbours, dh, siblings, cleaners etc. anything to help mke your life that bit easier.
good luck

roseylea · 31/01/2007 17:24

I was induced with ds and it was fine.

I think the hospital staff and other patients must havethought I was bonkers because as soon as I was given the first gel I put my walkman on (pre-MP3 days, those! ) and danced up and down the coridoor in an attempt to get ds moving! So I kept doing that for a few hours and it worked because I was 3 cm.

I had to have a drip and after that I was not as mobile but I kept the music going (I love music) and it was fine. THe special thing was that I was able to deliver him naturally (my dd was ventouse and so I it was nice not having to have that with ds).

I wouldn't choose to be induced but it was still up there as one of the most unforgettable, amazing, special days of mylife.

what did your bishops score say today?

grouchyoscar · 31/01/2007 17:28

Get a good reflexologist....worked for me

2Happy · 31/01/2007 17:30

Thanks, Stitch and Roseylea , like you Roseylea I want to avoid a repeat of ds (forceps).
Lulu, I won't even be examined until tomorrow, so I have no idea! (Should I have been examined today??) Do you know if you always get G&A if they break your waters? From last time, I know there's no G&A on the ante-natal ward, only labour ward, so would I be through there for it? Can I go into the pool if they break my waters? (God you must be sick of my inane questions, I promise it's gonna be a while before I ever even think about doing this again )

ok..well, you are often examined before the date is booked to make sure you are favourable for induction. but as you are term +10 it might be less relevant

i had my waters broken and i didn;t need G&A.didn't feeel it. you might get going with that alone if you are already dilating..

don;t think you can get in the pool with ARM, as you will have to have your contractions started with synto if you don;t start within a couple of hours...and that requires monitoring...

erm....what else??

stay as active , upright and mobile as you can...
try to avoid being stuck on the bed for ages....

that will help things to progress and get baby right down on the cervix

you;ll be ok., you have done this before, you can do it !

and of course it will be a breeze

2Happy · 31/01/2007 17:43

Thanks Lulu, again!!
This time tomorrow.......

soooooooooo excited !!!

Skyler · 31/01/2007 18:43

2Happy - I had a great induction really. Waters broken without any pessaries as was 2-3 cm dilated, however this only gave me the most feeble of contractions. I was dreading the drip and so they actually left me 5 and a half hours (marching around up and down stairs) instead of the two they initially said, however when they got the drip in (I was still only 3-4 cm) it was only 2 hours until dd2 was born, no stitches and no gas and air (made me feel sick). I wish I had had the drip earlier in alot of ways. Good Luck. HTH
I felt 10x more full of energy when dd2 finally arrived. I was knackered carrying her around.

2Happy · 31/01/2007 19:43

Thanks, Skyler. Weird mix of excitement and reeeeally scared!! dh gone out for consolation pizza - after all, it can't grow any more now can it?!

Was induced with pessary for DS1 and it was fine. I had a very short labour (1.5 hours from first contraction to placenta) - prefereable to the 40 hours labour a friend of mine endured. Good luck X

percypig · 31/01/2007 19:54

I had slight leakage of hindwaters on the day before my induction so spent most of that day in hospital, had a few pains that evening then had just 1 lot of gel at 6am. DS was born at 6pm - so not too long for a first labour.

As ds is my first (so far!) I obviously can't compare it to a 'normal' labour but I did say to the midwives I'd see them again - so it can't have been that bad. The worst part was that there was very little break between contractions, which I wasn't expecting based on the info in books and antenatal classes, and I went from 4-10 cm very quickly, so quickly I was confused when I felt the urge to push. Despite that I would definitely say I had a good labour - just used gas and air for most of it with 1 dose of pethidine towards the end.

Actually as I'm thinking about it, I was monitored a lot because of meconium in my waters, the cord was round ds's neck and he ended up being forceps. I lost an average amount of blood but because I was already anaemic I ended up being quite unwell afterwards...and despite all of that I still feel like I had a fairly good labour and would have no worries about being induced again!

docket · 31/01/2007 19:58

I was induced with ds and it was ok. All over and done with in 7 hours from the first twinge. I think people say induction can make it more painful but I think it was less painful for me than dd who was not induced.
And there are 20 months between ds and dd and whilst I can't promise you it'll be a breeze it will be okay! I'm 7 months in and really enjoying it now!

margo1974 · 31/01/2007 20:01

Both my labours were inductions

dd1 - I was already dilated so didn't have pessary - waters were broken - had G&A for 4 hours then had epidural. She was delivered by ventouse

dd2 - had pessary - didn't need G&A - asked for epidural before having my waters broken. Was able to push dd2 into the world without any further intervention

I may have been able to manage without the epidural the second time around but I was too chicken to find out

2Happy · 31/01/2007 20:02

Thank you incy and docket. Percy, I'm not sure that story makes me less scared, but the fact you came away feeling so positive does
I'm off to have a shower and shave my legs (given up caring what my ladygarden looks like )

VoodooBiltong · 31/01/2007 20:02

the only good thing about my induction was I enjoyed the pushing bit as it was a huge relief from the contractions!!!

Its not that bad, just stay relaxed.

mears · 31/01/2007 20:03

2Happy - waters are broken in labour ward. The pool is usually used for women who go into labour themselves - each unit is different though.

kittylette · 31/01/2007 20:04

on day 15 of being over due i was induced at 6pm with gel, no pains until 2am when my waters broke, and i went into labour

5 quick hours later and no complications i had a beautiful baby boy

Skyler · 31/01/2007 20:08

2Happy. You may not need the drip, but if you do just be aware they have to carry it on after you have actually delivered to tail the drugs off in your system. I wasn't prepared for that and thought they would whip the needle etc out as soon as I delivered. That was the worst bit I think, that bloody needle.
Enjoy your pizza. It is so exciting. I was terrified too and cried in the car on the way to the hospital more than once. However, it will be over tomorrow and your baby will be hear. How wonderful that will be . Aw, I am taken back now and feeling broody again. I think I want my babies back though not another one....
Take care. Will be thinking of you.

Skyler · 31/01/2007 20:09

Um HERE not hear.

Catilla · 31/01/2007 20:22

Have you been having any Braxton Hicks? Mine were getting more and more frequent... I had gel overnight & waters broken in the morning... then things took off on their own so never needed the drip. 6 hrs from waters broken to delivery. Wouldn't object to that again this time, especially from the point of view of planning care for ds!

hollyandalice · 31/01/2007 20:23

Hi, my induction with my dd was brill. I was 12 days over, went into hospital after lunch. They gave me one prostin pessary and an hour later I was contracting every 3 mins. Got into birthing pool soon after that and dd was born 2.5 hours later!! If you get the chance have a water birth, they really help with the pain.

Don't worry, not everyone's induction stories are hellish!

2Happy · 31/01/2007 20:44

Thanks everyone.
Skyler - I still don't want the drip, but have definitely softened on it since 'speaking' to you!
hollyandalice - that's the sort of induction I want!!
Catilla - you're right, at least I've got my mum primed to look after ds tomorrow. I have been getting BHs on and off, though nothing especially spectacular (certainly I've never thought I was about to go into labour by myself )

Nemo2007 · 31/01/2007 20:49

hi
I was induced with all three of my children and it wasnt as bad as I was lead to believe. I was given 2 lots of prostin then put on drip and waters broken. Once my labours have started then all my children have been born within a couple of hours.

As for 19mth old and newborn I have a 3.3yr old, 13mth old and 4wk old and it has been surprisingly easy as long as you dont sweat the little things. House work will always wait so dont get caught up in worrying about it.

Nemo2007 · 31/01/2007 20:51

meant to add never had any interventions or tearing with any of them and both dds were born with no pain relief as I opted for primal screaming instead i.e couldnt keep the g+a in my mouth as wanted to shout..lol
