Length of hospital stay after c section?

Klambert30 · 30/01/2007 10:18

Does anyone know how long the minimum stay in hospital is after a c section. When can you say I've had enough, I want to go home now? Last time I stayed in 10 days because my babies were in special care but if baby is fine when can you go home?

Current NICE guidelines say, you can leave after 24 hours, if you are not feverish. I left after 30 hours last time, but it helped that i'd had my CS before noon, and they count days weirdly in hospitals. (That being said, lots of hospital staff don't know about these guidelines, even though they're on posters on their walls )

You can check yourself out against medical advice, anyway. I did it after my first CS (stayed in for 48 hours).

I had DD on a Tuesday mid morning and was out by 10am Thursday morning.Very much depends on your consultant I think-mine knew I just couldn't wait to get home.

I do think they recommend 2 nights min.

Hi,
dp and I both had emergency c sections and we both came out on day 2 (we both had our babies on a Friday and came out on the Sunday - spooky..!). Neither hospital was particularly pleased but we wanted to go home and knew that we'd have good care at home.

I had my c section on a Monday and was discharged on the Friday - had a wound infection so that had to be treated before I left and DS was in SCBU - he was obviously going to be there for a long time though so quickly came to the decision that I would recover better at home (away from the dreadful food!!).

MegaLegs · 30/01/2007 12:21

I went home after two days although they recommended three. I'd already been in 11 days before he was born there was a heatwave and I had never been so uncomfortable in my whole life. Just wanted my own bed and bath and some quiet!

belgianmama · 30/01/2007 12:22

First baby, mums tend to stay in for nights. 2nd baby for 2.

lulumama · 30/01/2007 12:23

my em c.s was 8 pm on a friday, came home tuesday....was fine for me.....my milk came in monday night and i was quite feverish and felt unwell, so glad i was there !

bundle · 30/01/2007 12:23

4 days first time, 3 days second time

Nip · 30/01/2007 12:26

I had DS at 1.10am on the Friday and went home Sunday Lunch Time.

Aloha · 30/01/2007 12:27

I stayed in the night of the op, stayed one other night and went home the next morning. I wish I'd gone home after one night, tbh. Would have had more sleep!

lucy5 · 30/01/2007 12:34

I had an emergency section on the friday afternoon and went home on the Monday morning. I did everything in my power to get out. With hindsight I should have stayed in longer. For the first few days, I was on cloud nine and didn't really feel like I had had surgery. I basically overdid it when I got home, had my stiches out too early and ended up with an infection. Now 9 weeks on I am still walking round with 2 belly buttons My advice is see how you feel but don't push it.

chipkid · 30/01/2007 12:35

had an elective section on monday morning. Left hospital on Thursday morning. I was in longer after my natural delivery!!!!!!

yeahinaminute · 30/01/2007 12:37

Had CS on Thursday morning and was home by 10 am Saturday morning !!

saintmaybe · 30/01/2007 12:45

I checked out 'against advice' after all three emergency c-sections after about 18-24 hours. Not as dramatic as it sounds, and I had no real opposition, you just sign something saying you understand and take responsibility. I felt fine, had help at home and hate being in hospital, can't sleep etc. Obv. it'll depend on your own circumstances and feelings.

Highlander · 30/01/2007 15:00

48 hours. Sooooooo glad to get home, despite lugging DS2 half a mile in his car seat and hoovering next day.

Plibble · 30/01/2007 23:17

Where I was they liked you to stay for 3 "days" after the baby was born. Because of the way hospitals sometimes work (with a day deemed to begin at noon ), if your baby is born before noon, the afternoon of the day of the birth is day 2.

My baby was born at 12:20(ish) on a Friday. If she had been born at 11:59, I could have gone home on Sunday, but as she was 20 -odd minutes later, they wanted me to stay until Monday.
I was dying to get home, but with hindsight I should have stayed longer. The CM came on the Tuesday and shipped me straight back to hospital for the night. Ho hum.

5 days both time but I was going home to no help whatsoever..

this time round - hope to stay 5 days to get some rest before back to my busy life

Weegle · 31/01/2007 15:31

I was 5 days - would have been 4 but LO needed extra help because of blood sugar problems. I was so grateful for the electronic bed they had in hospital - I really missed that when I got home and had to use those oh so painful tummy muscles!

ProfYaffle · 31/01/2007 15:37

I had mine on a Sunday evening and was home on Wednesday morning. Friend of mine has just had her 2nd c/s and said she highly recommends a private room if they're available, much quieter.

danceswithnewboots · 31/01/2007 15:43

section monday morning, home wednesday. I should have stayed until the Thursday, I almost passed out in the car park!

First time, section Wednesday, out Saturday pm.

Second time, section Monday morning, out Wednesday afternoon. They would have let me go before lunch but the doctor who was supposed to sign me out went AWOL.

sexkittyinwaiting · 31/01/2007 15:59

I stayed 2 days both times. I couldn't rest and got distressed. it was much better at home.

fifiandtheflowertots · 31/01/2007 16:08

i had ds by emergency cs very early hours of sat morning, stayed in over night then came home sunday tea time.
Id asked to come home and they were reluctant as i had low iron count but ive always had that so i kept on at them and they let me out.
