How many people were knackered after birth?! How many people were so tired they just wanted to sleep?

You see, it was so different for me - both times.

First one was a 2 day jobbie after being induced, and second was 7 hours start to finish.

Yet.... BOTH times, I wasnt tired..... complete opposite. I was buzzing - on a total high. I would love to do it all over again one day!

Come on then - your verdict, am i weird?!

I didnt sleep for about 2 days after dd was born because I was too excited! I should have made the effort though, getting breastfeeding established was a nightmare for about the first week so I didnt get much sleep then because I was trying to feed.

Angeliz · 29/11/2006 20:28

I couldn't sleep after all of them.
Too excited.
Infact i was buzzing for weeks.

colditz · 29/11/2006 20:33

I was just like you, JARM, 42 hour labour, induced with first, when he finally arrived I became convinced that if I closed my eyes for a millisecon he would explode.

DS2, 5 hour active labour, not a great deal of pain before active labour, and afterwards I didn't feel the urge to try to go straight to sleep because i wasn't at all overwraught about having a baby, and knew I would physically be able to sleep later.

Flamesparrow · 29/11/2006 20:34

First - buzzing all night, but it was a shorter labour. The second, I'd been away for most of 25 hours (started with contractions about every 10 mins, not strong enough to do anything, but too strong to sleep) - by the time everyone finally buggered off home, and I could crawl into bed, I just passed out!!

figgypud · 29/11/2006 20:38

Hi JARM

I too was induced and had a 43 hr labour! Was actually falling asleep between contractions at the third stage but the Sec DD was born was on such a high Didn't feel at all sleepy!

MKG · 29/11/2006 20:38

I was induced due to high blood pressure so the night that I went in for the prosteglandin, they kept coming in every 3 hours to check my bp. So didn't sleep. Was in labor all the next day with visitors popping in and out. Pushed for two hours (fell asleep between pushes) after ds was born and we got our initial bond, he was taken to the nusery and I went to bed.

octobermum · 29/11/2006 20:42

Not tired at all, i had a back ache labour but i thought it was just because i had been sewing. had a good night sleep, woke up was bleeding no pains, went to the hospital was already 8cm was given petherdine slept for another 4hours, then 10min later had dd.

so in 24hrs i probaly slept for about 17 hours.

mamama · 29/11/2006 20:44

Far too excited to sleep. I just sat and watch DS for hours on end. Took me 3 or 4 weeks to feel exhausted. Not sure I've recovered yet!

whatwouldjesusdo · 29/11/2006 20:47

JARM - I did sleep after ds2 was born, and then felt incredibly guilty, anyone could have nicked him! But he had kept me up all night

Cakehead · 29/11/2006 20:56

Jarm/Figgypud - was like you. Two-day labour, fell asleep on my feet mid-contraction in the last few hours, but then could not get to sleep at all. Flying like a kite! I've heard that prolonged pain in labour releases extra endorphins, and I've always thought that's why. I told DH off when he asked if he could go home at nearly midnight, five hours after she was born! LOL.

JARM · 29/11/2006 21:03

cool - so im not weird then lol

I love that buzz - wish i felt like that everyday!!!

I was like that JARM, especially after ds3. DH kept telling me to sit down, I started tidying up the labour room whilst he gave ds a cuddle. He kept laughing at me and saying I looked glowing as if I'd just been on holiday!. Pity it's worn off now.

laundrylover · 29/11/2006 21:53

I was having regular contractions from Weds night til I had DD1 on the Sat morning and then lay awake all Sat night thinking 'this is my 4th night of no sleep.....'.

I was at home 3 hours after having DD2 and think I still lay awake watching her. Can't really remember as haven't had a decent night's sleep for 8 months now.

BTW I am going to spend this Sat night at a posh hotel with 3 other mummies and my breast pump - hurrah!!!! Please, please let me sleep!

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 29/11/2006 22:02

I was on an absolute high and quite hyper. I rang my best friend at nearly midnight as I had no concept of time and suddenley realised I hadn't phoned her and started panicking!!! She said to me afterwards that she'd thought I was joking at first as I sounded so awake etc but then I began rambling and she realised I was jsut excited!!! I spent most of the night trying to sleep but just keep peeking and poking and smelling and cuddling and talking to myself!!!

Miaou · 29/11/2006 22:10

Oh I was the same after dd1 and dd2 were born - even though both times I had missed a whole night's sleep! Ds was born at 2.15am so again missed a night's sleep - however I had to be transferred to a bigger hospital two hours away as I had a retained placenta a few hours after he was born - and amazingly I slept in the ambulance on the way there AND on the way back!! Despite the fact I was still having contractions on the way there! I seem to remember my last waking thought was something like "hmm, retained placenta, might die then" - still went to sleep though

2nervesnapartridgeinapeartree · 29/11/2006 22:22

Miaou can you really die from a retained placenta?

I had same and if above is true I am shocked that I did not know this and have not been making the most out of my near death experience with DH!

Miaou · 30/11/2006 10:18

Not directly 2nerves - it was my slightly addled brain going into overdrive! But if you have a retained placenta that needs surgically removing then afaik you have more chance of suffering post-partum haemorrhage which in itself could be life-threatening. However in the end mine did not need surgery, just a good old-fashioned tug

ComeOVeneer · 30/11/2006 10:24

Totally exhausted both times but couldn't sleep, like others said I was buzzing. DD was a 71 hour labour (back to back with cord around neck twice), ds was 14 hours but over 10lbs so a real effort to get out, and both were born in the early hours of the morning.

Piffle · 30/11/2006 10:24

nope had mine during office hours very quickly
Never can sleep 24 hrs post birth, you just stare at them...
Then regret it and say next tiem I'll sleep straight after the birth when the baby does.
Ho hum we'll see!

2nervesnapartridgeinapeartree · 30/11/2006 20:20

Miaou I did have surgery to remove! Now I can talk about the time I nearly died in childbirth!
My DH is not going to like this. Ha ha ha. [evil emotional blackmail emoticon]

popsycal · 30/11/2006 20:22

Not tired at all - two short births (one extremely short)

LoucheWoman · 30/11/2006 20:24

mine were all early in the morning following (what passes for) a nights sleep, so no. wide awake and revelling in my own accomplishments, i was

youre not wierd. not in that respect anyhow

3andnomore · 30/11/2006 21:08

JARM, yeah with all my 3 I wasn't tired, and they all were complete different Births...or, well, I was tired, but far to excited and buzzing to be able to sleep!

3andnomore · 30/11/2006 21:09

Oh, and with es and ms I only had entonox for the last hour, other then that it was drugfree, and with ys I had a Emergency C-section, so had a spinal block etc...
