home births seeem to be getting more common but I am still afraid I will have difficulty getting supoort in my decision to have one, had two home births already but with independent midwife which isn't an option for me. I am on housing waiting lists for places all over rthe country so not sure where I will end up or even if I will get a move before the abby is born but wondering how common NHS home births are in different areas.

Ive had 2 homebirths in Plymouth and am having one in Portsmouth in May, hope it helps.

CKMUM · 15/10/2006 17:04

thanks, i know i am allowed to wherever I am, but I had a fantastic birth last time and am worried about the birth being spoilt by the presence of a midwife who isn't as enthusiastic about home births as I am

DS was an unplanned home birth in Hove 3 years ago. Hoping for another next time. There's a very strong home birth team in Brighton and Hove - I'm told it's 1 in 8 births,(possibly highest home birth rate in UK?)

Tommy · 15/10/2006 17:08

am planning one in Southampton in Feb - very supportive midwife team at Surestart

treacletart · 15/10/2006 17:12

some national stats here

gigglinggoblin · 15/10/2006 17:14

i think its down to individual mw, my hospital (lancashire) is supposed to be really good but my mw has been really negative so far, she says all the right things but keeps making up problems and you can tell she doesnt like the idea. last time i had a mw who tried to persuade me to go for a hb, same hospital but different mw

tessasmum · 15/10/2006 17:16

Had one in Luton last year. Community midwives VERY, VERY supportive. Was a hospital-based midwife who was there when I delivered, had only turned up 10mins before though as all very quick so didn't really get to know her!

QueenPeaHead · 15/10/2006 17:29

north wiltshire. but my community midwives completely disinterested so I ended up getting a fantastic independant midwife (best decision I ever made)

motherinferior · 15/10/2006 17:31

Lewisham. I had bog-standard community midwives who were totally unquestioning of my decision to have a home birth.

Highlander · 15/10/2006 20:23

very popular in Newcastle (so my midwife tells me!)

Spidermama · 15/10/2006 20:24

Two in London. Two in Brighton.

CrocodileKate · 15/10/2006 20:29

Lancashire, midwife was very supportive.

holidaysoon · 15/10/2006 20:38

Havn't had one but even had my GP trying to encourage me to do so this time round! (SW4)

holidaysoon · 15/10/2006 20:39

Should probably add that midwives are really in to them too.

MummyPig · 16/10/2006 01:20

Try looking at birthchoice.co.uk to find out home birth rates for each hospital or maternity unit. You could also ask about specific hospitals in the areas you might be moving to.

I had a home birth in Kingston but that was with an independent midwife as Kingston Hospital is notoriously unsupportive of home births. I also had a hospital birth in Chelsea and Westminster although booked for a home birth - the community midwives were very supportive of home births but sent me into hospital when my blood pressure rose above their 'safe' line. Unfortunately I didn't know enough/wasn't pushy enough to go back home, and ended up staying in hospital for five days and being induced. I wish I hadn't but can't change it now...

sydneygirl · 16/10/2006 06:40

Blackpool, Lancashire. Full support of midwives.

LadyTophamHatt · 16/10/2006 06:56

2 in Surrey. Well, actually it was London borough of sutton but my address was surrey, justto conmfuse you!!
1 was an unplanned HB, the other planned.

Having another in january in East Sussex.

throckenholt · 16/10/2006 07:30

I have friends who had them in south Lincs, Loughborough, Norwich and south Norfolk (all probably 6-2 years ago - so not sure what it is like now).

Flamebat · 16/10/2006 08:02

Bournemouth were lovely - I went in all guns blazing, said I wanted a homebirth and she said "Sure"

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 16/10/2006 08:04

oh heck - just looked at that birthchoice website - and that figures don't look good for homebirths in my area.........and that's what I'm hoping for this time round

mamaofmany · 16/10/2006 15:30

Cambridge - they seem to actively encourage it here - I would also recommend it to anyone, my best birth experience by far!
