Hospital baby bag - is 0-3months ok?

Hobby2014 · 02/07/2014 20:28

Is it ok to only take 0-3 months vests and baby grows to the hospital?

Or should I really be going out and buying newborn, first size, one month etc?

Trying to save money so I can get the most use from things but also what if I buy, and wash a load of newborn etc and I have a big baby?

Will baby look ridiculous?

Ok, definitely going to buy some smaller stuff. They're not expensive I guess and will be much better if baby is small. And if baby is mahoosive and doesn't wear them, I'm sure I'm not going to care.... I'll have a baby to coo over to take my mind off of the wasted clothes lol thanks everyone.

Wow lots of tincy tinie babies on this thread. Take at least one suit in size 0-3 as if your baby is on the slightly heavier/longer size they won't fit in newborn. We tried to put dd in the newborn suit and we couldn't even do the poppers or get her legs in. Newborn wouldnt fit a baby anywhere near 9lb in my experience.

People will give you loads too, especially if it is your first! Even if you don't really like the stuff, if it's clean, it's fine.

If anyone asks you about needing anything, don't be shy about asking for specific sizes (or prime your mum or close friends).

MrsAtticus · 02/07/2014 23:29

Well I took newborn stuff for DS2, which was huge for DS1, but DH had to go home and get 0-3! So I think 0-3 is a good bet as it doesn't actually matter if they wear something too big for them until someone can pop to the shops and get a pack of newborn or whatever, and the baby will grow into the stuff you've bought so nothing will be wasted.
With DS2 I had enjoyed buying a few new bits of newborn stuff for him, which we couldn't afford with DS1 so it was all second hand, so it was a bit annoying that it was all wasted as he never wore it!

CustardFromATin · 03/07/2014 03:08

Like others say, just a couple of newborn things and then you'll see what size they are and be able to go into 0-3 pretty soon (or if they're really small, you'll need to buy a smaller one). If you're a bit skint, it's worth mentioning to a couple of close family or friends that you don't have anything for newborn, my mother in law and my best friend were so excited to have given ds1 his first outfit ever and his going home outfit respectively! Not that many people give newborn clothes as gifts otherwise, as they know how fast they will grow out of them.

QuickQuickSloe · 03/07/2014 09:31

My 9lb DS did not fit newborn clothes- I think he was too long for them. I had lovely washed and aired all these teeny tiny vests and sleep suits and they were all too small!

they are now stored carefully increase we have another one who is a bit less leggy

QuickQuickSloe · 03/07/2014 09:32

Ps. Marks and Spencer seemed to measure smaller than the rest so the 0 to 3 months things fit beautifully.

randdom · 03/07/2014 09:35

Our son ended up basically going straight into 0-3 as he was long and. 9lbs. The woman next to us in recovery had been told her baby would be big so only had 0-3 and then a 6lb baby and it really didn't fit. We had some newborn stuff so lent her a baby grow (as it want like we could use it) and that was still big on her.

If you are looking to save money you could look at second hand newborn baby bundles on eBay. It is what we did and we got maybe 5 sleep suits for a couple if pounds so was no harm done when he didn't fit!

OhGood · 03/07/2014 14:27

Hospital had to lend me some Blush because DD (6 pounds something) just vanished into my 0-3 clothes. She was a Tiny Baby.

DS was 7 pounds and long but was still in newborn.

Good luck OP! Great question btw I had no idea, didn't even cross my mind to ask - I mean it said 0-3 right? Though I do remember holding a 0-3 baygro up against my bump and thinking 'Good God, how am I going to get something that big out of me?'

So maybe worth getting Tiny Baby just for reassurance!

ShineSmile · 03/07/2014 20:12

I needed tiny clothes. I would take newborn personally.

januaryjam · 04/07/2014 11:12

I've haven't bought any newborn as they only roughly go up to 7 and half pounds, but have bought 'up to one month' instead (from next and a few other places) as these are a good in between for newborn and 0-3 and go up to 10 pounds!

Sirzy · 04/07/2014 11:14

Don't pay any attention to the weight. DS was over 11lb before newborn stopped fitting him

SpawningSalmon · 04/07/2014 20:28

Go to Primark OP. Their babygros and vests are really cheap and IME they keep their shape and wash better than most. My 5 week pls is just growing out of his, which were handed down from older DD and they are still in great condition. Unlike some of the more expensive ones that have lost their shape after 2 washes.

Also Tescos are v good and come up small so you may get away with 0-3 in those. Stay away from Next if you want to use 0-3 at the start- they are huge!

SpawningSalmon · 04/07/2014 20:29

*old not pls

TwoKidsAndCounting · 04/07/2014 20:34

Newborn definitely, I've had 4!

mummybare · 04/07/2014 21:02

Take both. DH had to run to a nearby supermarket after we realised that long 9lb 9oz DD wouldn't fit into any of the newborn stuff we'd brought.

MrsWombat · 05/07/2014 07:38

Definitely buy newborn, but you don't have to buy anything fancy or too many. Supermarket cheapies or a bundle off ebay will be fine. If DH or your first visitors (new grandparents?) have easy access to a supermarket they can always pick up some more on the way in once you know the birth weight.

When DS was born I believed all the people telling me not to buy the newborn size, and to go straight to 0-3 months. So I only had a newborn starter set with three outfits (vest and sleepsuit) that I saw half price from Woolworths, and felt guilty about that! Turns out they absolutely swamped DS and he was a sicky baby who went through outfits like anything! I was very glad when MIL turned up with more.

Cuppachaplz · 06/07/2014 00:00

I'd take both.
I was told DS was small, based on my birth weight of 4lb2, my weight gain with him of less than stone, and my non existent bump.
He was 9lb, but gained weight very fast. The NB and small baby stuff I had taken never fitted, luckily it was baking hot so he didn't look too drafting only a nappy whilst DH went on emergency clothes run...
Incidentally, we put him in Terry's once home, so the 0-3 m stuff only lasted a week. I gave it all new to SIL

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 07/07/2014 22:41

DD was induced at 37 weeks and I'd only packed 0-3 months so I had to send OH out to the shops the night before she was born to buy some First Size stuff. It still swamped her! I'd get first size or newborn. She's 12 weeks and still very comfortably in 0-3!

littlejohnnydory · 13/07/2014 14:20

ds was 8lb 7 and the newborn size was still big on him. dd1 was 10lb 4 and did fit the 0-3 month clothes but only for a couple of weeks before going into 3-6. dd2 was 8lb 12 and did fit the newborn size for a good few weeks.

Boogles91 · 14/07/2014 19:14

For us they were fine :) our lil boy was 8lb10oz and they are still quite big on him bless, unfortunatley as we were both so excited about meeting him we only packed on baby grow lol and that night he had it coming out all ends and i ended up going through 5 sets of clothes, borrowed from the hospital :) and the ones they bought me were 3month ones absolutly huge lol but i found at least he had room to manuver in em, as hes a lil wriggler and loves kicking those back legs about :p x

CalpolOnToast · 14/07/2014 19:33

I got a few Newborn bits and mostly 0-3 and ended up sending DH out for Tiny Baby stuff. Good idea to get a pack of Newborn and even Tiny and if the 0-3 turns out to be OK you can return the smaller sizes.

I thought DS would be about 8lb based on his 36 week growth scan where he was about 6lb 6 but he was only 7lb 1 when he was born.

redexpat · 15/07/2014 15:12

Take some of each in your hospital bag.

Heatherbell1978 · 16/07/2014 07:56

I've only bought newborn and 1 month for my hospital bag. I'm expected to have a small to average baby. I've asked friends if they want to buy me gifts to stick to 0-3 months so I have a few of those for later.
I have 3 friends who had babies recently ranging from 7lb 4 to 7lb 14 so very average sized, and all of them drowned in the 0-3m. Next do an up to 1 month size (which most of mine are) which they all recommended as a good size.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 16/07/2014 09:35

I got 0-3 months thinking no point in spending loads of NB that will last 5 mins. They were definitely too big and DH had to pop to the shops first thing Mon morning (DD born Sunday afternoon) to buy some newborn sleep suits and vests. I wouldn't get loads though.
