Best maternity pads/towels

Hi, this is my second preg and am due in September.
For my first birth I bought maternity pads from Mothercare but I remember thinking they weren't great. After the first week my lochia was reduced enough that I used Tesco Mum range at 99p a pack of ten but these won't be suitable for the first week. I was lucky last time that the hospital gave me 2 packs of really awesome ones that I do not remember the name of >.<

So to sum up.... What maternity pads did you find where the best for the initial heavy flow after giving birth?

Thanks in advance

I used Morrison's own brand ones after I had my daughter although they are very bulky which in my case was quite nice as I had stitches from episiotomy!

I used asda own brand with my first and they were brilliant. I tried to get them for my second but they were out of stock so I got boots ones instead. I wished I had waited and got them from asda as I found them so much nicer. I only used them for about 4 days then went onto always night time pads.

Oops sorry posted twice- stupid phone. My stitches were fine with both but I felt more comfortable in the asda ones .

Watching this with interest as I was just thinking of asking the same thing. I'm expecting dc3 in September and remember the feeling as I soaked through a pad in the middle of a feed but can't remember what pads I used Confused

I'm currently using Tena lady pants (gave birth 4 days ago) and despite my original worries of wearing a full pants rather than pads I have found them amazing for after the birth and they were great when my waters broke too! My midwife was suprised no one else had ever thought of wearing them.

Artandco · 23/05/2014 19:50

The naturcare ones are good

I really liked the Boots ones, I found them really thick and comfy. I've already stocked up on a few packs for after DC2 is born and have also bought a pack of 5 mattress protector mats from the same range for only a couple of quid for in case my waters break in bed or to protect mattress from leaks after the birth.

PickleBiscuit · 24/05/2014 11:32

I'd second the Boots ones. They are thick yet soft enough to do a great job and don't feel like you've a whole duvet stuffed in your pants like some! Smile

Fruityflapjack · 24/05/2014 11:35

I bought some boots ones I think but ended up sending DH out for some Tenna ones. He spoke to the nice lady in boots and came back with big lads, not the full pants ones. They were fabulous! If I ever brave another I'd just get them, and probably the full knicker type for night times.

OnlyMakingMeStronger · 24/05/2014 18:28

Thanks for your opinions!!

The tena pants sound awesome for night time! I used towels and maternity pads last time but didnt feel 'secure' in bed for about 2 weeks!!

very helpful as always ladies, thanks

Sainbo's own are my fave.. Find tescos abit thin width ways if you know what I mean. Haven't tried any others.

OnlyMakingMeStronger · 25/05/2014 08:05

The Tesco ones worry me as I find they tend to bunch up in my underwear....
I'm doing this on a budget aswell! Tens pants seem quite expensive but I guess if one does all night it's worth it.

Found that if I put a thin always night time pad on first with a massive sofa-like own brand one from boots on top this made me feel so much more secure. Quite often I would only be changing the top one but if I did leak a little it would be caught by the thinner one that wrapped round my knickers. Also meant I could wear comfy underwear rather than those horrid paper ones or cheapo primark ones etc - I just found the elastic cut in dreadfully on those and made my poor undercarriage really sore!

Good luck x

beanynamechange · 25/05/2014 13:57

A vote for boots here! Thick enough to do the job, thin enough that I didn't feel like I belonged in Dreams..

BlueC2 · 28/05/2014 20:58

I seem to remember somehow putting two side by side and another along the middle on top to start with... Sooo comfy after stitches! I also then started using an always nighttime pad with a boots mat pad on top as someone else mentioned, still soft and comfy but felt more secure to catch any leaks. I found the boots own brand fine to start with though and at £1 a packet or thereabouts I didn't mind using several at once!

FlyLikeABird · 30/05/2014 19:30

Asda do a version of Tena pants and are great.

I was going to say 'tena' style pants too. They were brill in labour when waters went I just stuck a separate pad in as well and changed that more regularly. No leaks unlike first labour when waters went walking down hosp corridor!

Cariad007 · 30/05/2014 21:29

Sains and Boots own brand were fine and after about 10 days I switched to the slimline Boots pads and then, after a few weeks when my stitches had healed, to normal sanitary pads. But I didn't have v heavy lochia - tbh I've had periods that were heavier.

Tena were by far the best I tried. I sent DH for more pads and he came back with Tena by mistake. After that it was Tena all the way!

thereisnoeleventeen · 05/06/2014 14:08

I like the sainsburys or the boots ones. Boots also do a thin version which are a bit more comfortable.

spottydolphin · 05/06/2014 14:11

i researched this before having my baby 6 weeks ago and found lots of people wsaying tena pants, so that's what I got.

they.were.awesome!

seriously, i think i might use them every month now Blush

this was my 4th baby, so btdt plenty of times and can honestly say the pants are great. make you feel very secure and no chance of any leakage Grin

tryingtocatchthewind · 05/06/2014 14:47

I'm another one who had to use two side by side to begin with - yuk. I used a mixture of boots and morrisons, started with the lovely thick ones and then just used the thin ones.
