twin waters broken at 27 weeks, any info on survival rates etc.?

Hi, My best friend's sister's waters broke this morning at 27 weeks. She is having IVF twins. She went to hospital and starting having contractions but these have been stopped with drugs. She is now on a ward but babies will be delivered in a few days. One is 2lbs and the other just under 2lbs.
Does anyone know anything about babies born this early? My friend doesn't know what to say for the best. Her sis is calm as docs have said that the babies look good and they have delivered babies earlier then this.

My friend had a dd at 26 weeks 6 years ago
her dd weighed just under 2lbs and was singleton.
Friend had placental abruption and it was emergency c section so she had no drugs to prepare her babies no advance warning
Her dd was born very poorly, but recovered amazingly well. She is now 6 and has had some minor developmental problems but is doing ok in school etc
It is incredible what size babies can live from these days, some babies are real fighters

Thats good to know Piffle. 2lbs just seems so tiny. they weren't due till nov.

I once knew a woman who gave birth to twins at 25 weeks after being in a car crash. The twins were tiny (I can't remember the weight) and were kept in hospital for a time but grew up to be lovely, healthy girls.
Hope it goes well for her.

I know a little girl who was born at either 23 or 25 weeks (think it was 23) weighing less than 2lb. She is 3 now and apart from getting to somw physical milestones a bit later, she is fine .

A friend of mine had a 1lb 12oz little boy at 26 weeks (singleton). He has completely caught up, is now 10 and while on the little side, is absolutely fine.

While dd4 was in special care I saw lots of very early tiny babies. Many of these well under 2lb and I can honestly say while we were there every one of them was thriving. Neonatal units are amazing and so many babies are surviving at very young ages. Send her big hugs and lots of prayers from me xxxxx

I had IVF twins 2.10 years ago, the doctors do like you to reach 30 weeks, whatever pregnancy but, the twins are viable now (sorry! horrible word) and have every chance of survival, your friends's sister will need alot of support though, but trust in what the doctors say, they HAVE delivered much younger babies, try not to worry, I know thats hard to say!

I have a friend (like me, now in his 40s) who was one of a pair of twins born exceptionaly early. He was just over 2 pound at birth.....this was over 40 years ago. He is totaly fine and now a father himself

Aaaah thanks everyone, you are all really kind and being very positive. My friend is visiting her sis now so when she's back I'll tell her to go on Mn and look at this thread. I'm going to print them out for the twins mummy. xx

BILs friend had twins at 25 weeks last year, a boy and a girl. I believe the little girl had a few problems to start with, but they both went home at 4 month old.

UPDATE> Hi, As both the babies have SOME water in each of their sacs they are not going to deliver her yet. She is to stay in hosp for 7 weeks or untill they come naturally.
She is pleased that they are not going to be born yet but is not looking forward to the long stay in hospital.
I told her sis all about this thread and she is going to pass it all on.

princessmel.... I'm so glad to hear that.

Tell her she's in my prayers.. her and the DTs.

Don't forget to visit her lots with trashy mags, illicit chocolate cakes etc. I did a 2 week stay in hospital.

I was so embarrassing when a m/w told me that the babies were fine to be discharged but I wasn't. I put my head under the pillow and howled. The Chief Registrar came down and released me lol So I know a little of how she feels. Still, at least she's in good hands.

My DD was born at 29 weeks after waters broke. She was in hospital for 6 weeks but is now a gorgeous 18 month old. She is tall for her age but cannot walk yet but she is an absolute treasure. God bless.

I had a baby of 27 weeks and was told 80% survival. A friend had twins the same age. All the babies are now 7 and are fine.

BTW My baby was lb 12oz, so under 2lbs. She is still little but not abnormally so (smallest in class by 1cm)

I had my twins @26+6 weighing 2lb & 2lb1oz. And they are now 5 and have been some of the healthiest children I know. I didn't get the steroids to mature their lungs either which should make a big difference for your friend.

I agree with the 80% survival quoted below but every day they can keep them safely inside counts...

I would recommend that your friend asks to see the neonatal unit where they will be so she knows what to expect. Not sure if all hospitals will allow this but if allowed would be good to put her mind at ease & prepare her for the sights & sounds if she does give birth in the next few days or weeks.

Deffo insist on having steriod injections for their lungs

{Make sure she keeps clean down below iyswim}

My DTs were born at 27 weeks after water breaking at 23 weeks and DS is about to go to senior school in 2 weeks time

UPDATE***

Hi, just thought I'd update you on my friend's sister.

She had the twins on tuesday. They will be 30 weeks on sunday.
They were delivered by c section while she was awake.
She had a boy and a girl. The boy weighed about 3lbs and the girl less than 2lbs. (She thought it was the other way round, large baby - girl, small, boy !)
They were taken to intensive care straight away, she didn't get to hold them or even look at them. Her dh took video though.
She has seen them a few times and touched them through the hole in the incubator.They have lots of tubes and wires in them etc. She is expressing loads of milk and the boy is feeding every hour so thats good. The little girl is too small for her milk at the moment and is being fed through a tube into her tummy.

She was very down the day they were born but feels a bit better today.
Docs said that the bigger one will need to stay till at least Nov and they don't know about the girl.

She saw all the messages you wrote before and really appreciated them. Thanks

Colleague had her twins delivered at 27 weeks due to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. They're 2 in a few weeks and healthy, happy mischievious little scamps.
Good luck to your bf's sister and the babes
