Induction using prostin - any stories or advice?

babsie007 · 24/01/2014 20:28

Hi all, I'm 40+1 and they started the induction process with me tonight after diagnosing me with preeclampsia yesterday.

I have just has the first prostin pessary inserted nearly 2 hours ago. Since then just a slight bit of discomfort (I think this was from the vaginal exam more than anything else), and I have also experienced some tightenings.

Do any of you have any stories of how long it takes etc? Any positive or negative induction stories?

My cervix is soft, but closed. I have been told I will be given anoter internal in another 4 hours and may be given another pessary. The next stage would then be to break my waters in the morning and put me onto a syntocin drip.

I wondered why no one had answered you OP so thought I would. You're probably bored ridged but rest, rest ,rest. How exciting!!! I cant really help as My last born was 16 years ago but I was induced... But I am not going to tell you what it was like because every one reacts differently...you could be pushing now!!! Or it might take a day or 2. Any way I shall be thinking of you tonight and will log in to MN in the morning...If you can, keep me informed and if lounging around bored again tomorrow, I will have a 'chat' Oh.. I wont sleep now!!

Not to be negative, but are you planning to have an epidural? If so, I recommend discussing it with the midwife before they break your waters. My pain increased significantly when my waters were broken. You would definitely want it before the drip goes on!

Good luck!!

Marylou62 · 24/01/2014 20:54

And I really hope you DONT get any negative experience stories.

Josie314 · 24/01/2014 20:56

Just to say, I don't mean they will give you an epidural before breaking your waters. But it would be good to set out your expectations before you are in a lot of pain and getting set up on the drip.

babsie007 · 24/01/2014 21:04

I will keep you fully up to date marylou!!

I have discussed epidural Josie but I hoping that I can manag without it!!!! I do know that most people experience a marked increase in pain once the drip goes in. I believe their preference is to site for an epi anyway so at least it's in place if I need or decide to utilise it.

I'm aiming to get by without one as I know it can slow things down so was aiming to go with gas and air and diamorphine. The consultant did visit me this morning though and his suggestion was that because my pb is elevated that I should seriously consider an epidural as this will do more for my BP than diamorphine will.

So many options!!! No one discussed pain relief with me before today.

Hi,

I was induced for my wee one (through choice), she's seven weeks now, and it was fine. I'd read loads of horror stories - thanks Mumsnet! - but it was truly a positive experience.

Prostaglandin gel went in at 6pm, some niggles overnight, OB popped my waters at 8am and Syntocinon drip was started at 9.30am. Contractions started quickly but the pain was manageable, 5cm by 12.30pm, used gas&air as I progressed, and baby arrived at 3.07pm.

It was a fast and intense labour, and I think I was pretty lucky, but it was really fine.

It sounds naff but remember your breathing, it definitely helped.

Good luck!

babsie007 · 24/01/2014 22:27

Scotinoz good to hear such a positive story!! I have my next internal in am hour and a half so they will be able to check if I'm dilating any and they will decide if I need another pessary.

Hopefully this will work. My midwife suggested that people with elevated blood pressure tend to have a quicker labour too so fingers crossed!!

I am feeling some period type cramping but it's constant and more uncomfy than painful. Haven't had any more tightening a since the pessary first went in (around 6:30pm).

babsie007 · 25/01/2014 00:41

Midwife has just put the second pessary in. Again, cervix is soft and she can get one finger in but the back is closed. Apparently if it opens, they can oh ahead and break my water in the morning

I don't think I had prepared for the pain of this - unrelenting period pain with tightenings!!

That's great that you're moving on a bit. Make sure you get some sleep.

Looking back, having the midwife pressing on my belly to contract my uterus after delivery is what I remember as being the worst bit!

Focus, and breath, and you'll be fine.

babsie007 · 25/01/2014 06:45

I think I might make use of more codeine before being brought down to delivery! Although I haven't been checked yet this morning to see how dilated I am. Hopefully enough, keen to get the ball rolling

blackandwhiteandredallover · 25/01/2014 07:02

Good luck! I was induced with DD2. I just had the pessary to get things going and because I started contracting I didn't need the drip. Once things got going it was no different to my first labour and I didn't need an epidural.

Marylou62 · 25/01/2014 07:37

First thing I thought off when I opened my eyes this morning was you OP. Hope you progressing well and who knows, you might not be able to answer cos you're holding your brand new baby!!?

babsie007 · 25/01/2014 08:24

Sadly I don't think I'm as lucky blackandwhite!!

Still no further forward marylou :-( I have the period type cramping still but no one had been in to check if I'm dilated yet, to see if they can break my water. And I haven't had any codeine yet either!! Sad

blackandwhiteandredallover · 25/01/2014 08:37

Period type cramping is a good sign! Have they hooked you up to the machine to see if you are having contractions yet? I remember being surprised I was as it didn't seem painful enough yet.

It's a waiting game being induced, I remember how long and tedious it was. Good luck and keep positive.

IglooisnowinSheffield · 25/01/2014 08:52

Aww lovely you are having a baby this weekend! I've had two synto inductions, managed without epi. Took a few pessarys to get going but from drip insertion to delivery six hours both times. They usually give you an hour after breaking waters for things to kick start, good luck!

redcaryellowcar · 25/01/2014 09:10

i started reading your thread last night. as pg with dc2 and sleep often evading me! i was induced with dc1, it wasn't terribly comfortable but i don't think any form of child birth is. i had gas and air and diamorphine but no epidural, and think you can manage without, but saying that everyone experiences pain differently so i would suggest you go with the flow! best of luck today.

soupmaker · 25/01/2014 09:20

Hope you're holding a baby now OP.

I was induced with DD2. Pessary at 10pm, baby at 6am. Was very fast and furious so never got to hard drugs, just gas and air. Was sore, and a bit scary calling DH from the lift as I was being rushed to the labour suite to have her. He only made it by 20 minutes.

My experience was good.

Elllimam · 25/01/2014 10:22

I had prostin and started contracting a couple hours after 2nd prostin/sweep. I did have an epi but everything went smoothly. Hope your LO arrives soon :) xxxxx

Marylou62 · 25/01/2014 11:18

Just come back from a long walk with the dog and been thinking of you! No horror stories but my induction was quite long. but I was only 38 weeks. Just rest as much as you can. Sleep, eat well and rest. x

babsie007 · 25/01/2014 11:35

Thanks for all the positive stories and thoughts!

Still no baby and we are onto the 3rd and final prostin. Doctor said I'm 1cm but they would struggle to break my waters at the moment. I will be checked again at about 3ish (6 hours after prostin).

I have had some contractions with pessary but with this 3rd one they weren't as intended and have stopped now, just got the cramps. I'm really hoping this one works and I can have a go at vaginal birth - they have suggested a section tomorrow if this does to get her moving and it's something I would prefer to not do.

I'm going to try and get some snooze time in now in the hope they are able to break my water later!!

I will keep you all posted. She is as happy as Larry in mums tummy it would seem!! Envy

babsie007 · 25/01/2014 11:36

I meant the contractions after this 3rd pessary weren't as intense!! Autocorrect...

OP posts:
homeaway · 25/01/2014 11:53

Good luck op hope things get moving for you soon. Don't be too disappointed if you have to have a c section you will have done all you could to have a vaginal birth.

babsie007 · 25/01/2014 16:54

I've accepted the fact that I might need a section but hopefully it won't come to that!

They aren't checking me again this evening. After 3 doses of prostin, they have decided to leave me to my own devices tonight to see if anything happens spontaneously. If not, they will attempt to break my waters in the morning if I dilated enough. If not then it's into theatre.

The promising things is that it's been nearly 8 hours since my last dose of prostin and I have started having contractions!!! Shock could this be it I wonder....?!

Marylou62 · 25/01/2014 18:29

OOOOH! As I said before, soooo exciting! I really really wish you well and will log on when I wake in the morning..(I promise, I am not a stalker, just thinking of you.).xxxxxxx

RandomMess · 25/01/2014 18:31

Hope it goes well. I've had 4 inductions with protin, two I need ARM with two I didn't.

Once the ARM was performed things moved on pretty quickly!

Just focus on healthy baby, the "perfect" birth is a dangerous myth IMHO.
