1-2-1 midwives Manchester

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 07/01/2014 09:32

My friend has just booked with them on the NHS in Manchester and is wanting a hospital birth.

I said I would ask on here if anyone had given birth with them in a Manchester hospital and how it worked.

Did they actually deliver the baby? What happened if the labour was long - do they send another 1-2-1 midwife out?

I think they can only go in as a doula for a hospital birth, they won't be licensed to actually deliver the baby there for her.

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 07/01/2014 10:39

Oh I see rock chick - they aren't independent mw though, are they?

As I understand it they are delivering nhs mw services in the Wirral, or am I wrong?

Will she have to pay them herself if they are acting as a doula?

One to One Midwives go into the hospital with you, care for you in labour and delivery your baby. They are independent but are commissioned by the NHS to provide care so they can delivery care in specific NHS hositals and you don't pay. Your friend is lucky, it is a fantastic service!

Bue · 07/01/2014 12:28

Actually I am not sure if they currently are allowed to deliver babies in the hospital, although I am sure they did at one time, at least in the Wirral. Nevertheless your friend's midwife would accompany her into hospital so she would still get continuity of care.

emsyj · 07/01/2014 12:43

They couldn't deliver you in hospital when I had DD2 nearly a year ago. I don't think they are insured. They will attend you at home in labour though, bringing gas and air, and will accompany you on transfer so you don't need to go through triage on admission. My midwife said she would stay with me at the hospital to advocate for me, but ultimately I had the baby at home so it didn't come up.

One to One is a fantastic service. You don't have to pay for any of it.

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 07/01/2014 13:26

Thanks so much for the replies - Emsy that is amazing to read they will bring gas and air to your home. So theoretically at least she could get quite far on in labour at home before going in - past 4 cm at least. I think part of the problem is many of us - including me - go into hospital too early and before real active labour.

My friend was hoping they could deliver the baby if she picked hospital - it's her first - so I think she will be disappointed about that bit, but very good to hear you found it to be great and that it's completely free!!

Emsy, is there anything else you think it would be useful for her to know about the service?

Will they try to encourage her to have a home birth?

Just reading the website now and it is full of home birth stories - lovely and I would love one next time, but I think she's set on hospital.

I am on the Wirral, so I don't know any of the midwives in Manchester but we are very lucky here to have fantastic, committed, lovely ones who go the extra mile. I was able to borrow a birth pool to use in labour too (you don't have to book a home birth to be loaned a pool, no charge for that either) - so you can have lots of stuff set up at home to be more comfortable.

They did ask me about having a home birth, but I said no - I was too scared (DD1 was crash section). I booked a hospital birth but in the end (in the throes of labour) decided not to transfer, and it was sooooooo much nicer to be at home. I wouldn't say they tried to persuade/encourage me either way to be honest. It's all about your own choices.

Here, they are offering free Hypnobirthing classes as part of the service - it books up very fast so tell your friend to ask about it if she's interested. And maybe tell her to get some cheap shower curtains and inco pads to stash away just in case she decides when in labour that she wants to stay at home after all. My parquet is irreperably blood stained (not too bad, just a few spots, and hidden by a rug) - the only negative aspect of the whole experience for me! Grin

Rockchick1984 · 07/01/2014 16:00

I'm using them currently and was told by my midwife that she can't deliver the baby if I transfer in, obviously she can if I have the home birth I'm planning!

Saucia · 07/01/2014 16:28

Mine in the wirral didnt even come to the hospital, shame because I had an awful birth. They did encourage a home birth

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 07/01/2014 16:57

All really useful info for her - thanks all of you so much.

Saucia, did you want her to come in with you and she refused?

Hi my doula (a qualified midwife) is now working as a one to ons midwife in Manchester. She was absolutely superb as a birth assistant. If they are all of a similar calibre they will be brilliant.

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 07/01/2014 23:02

Ooh that's lovely to hear Amanda - thank you!! I will tell her. She is thrilled to have got her gp to sign off on it.

39+4 in Cheshire and booked in with One2One

Just seen the midwife tonight at 7:00 at our house - it's great

Plan is to see how things go at home and then transfer to hospital if I want with the midwife acting as a doula as she can't deliver at the hospital I'm going to

This is DC2 and I think it's a fab servicea

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 08/01/2014 00:25

That's brilliant Gobbolino - tbh I'm starting to wish they had this in my area for when I get my bfp with dc 2!

I went into early labour and had phone conversations but got a good luck and not much else. It was great having a personal midwife through pregnancy but it was a bit of a let down to not be supported at the birth. The postnatal care was good, they visit for about 6 weeks afterwards.

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 08/01/2014 19:28

The postnatal care sounds good, Saucia, but the labour care doesn't sound ideal. I will tell her to ask about situations where she won't be accompanied into hospital, so she understands what she will be getting.

Spoke to friend yesterday eve - she has had her booking in appointment agreed and is very excited. We made a list of questions for her to ask including asking about what happens when going into hospital to give birth - will mw go with her for sure (thank you, Saucia for that info).

Sounds like a great service - thanks so much for all info everyone Thanks Thanks

Interestingly, just seen on Twitter that One to One are opening a birthing centre on the Wirral - so you never know, they may open further centres in the future? Would be an alternative to the current situation where you can only have full continuity if you have a home birth. Sounds like a great plan. Probably too late for your friend OP, but other readers on this thread may be interested.

WaitingForPeterWhimseyNow · 09/01/2014 11:34

That is really interesting Emsy! Hopefully people can then have a half way house between home and hospital too.

This is an old thread but just wondering if anyone has more recent experience of 121 midwives. I am 13+2 and considering transferring. Apparently they don't formally cover my area but I can still access the services.

Notmymonkeys · 06/10/2014 16:36

I'm in Leeds and I had a one-to-one midwife with ds2 who was born in February. I had a home birth (which was amazing btw), but had I needed to go to hospital my midwife would have accompanied me and acted as a doula/advocate. Your friend should have plenty of time in her antenatal appointments to discuss all the possible scenarios and to agree a birth plan. I was seriously impressed with the ante- and post-natal care I received. I wish they were available for all pregnant women!
