Absolutely fine. Lean forward when you wee as it can sting ... Some people squirt themselves with warm water while they wee.

Drink lots of water so your first poo isn't made more difficult with constipation. Some people hold their stitches with a sanitary pad.

I've had two births both with second degree tears and it was fine. You'll do both gingerly for a few days, but just relax - the reality isn't as bad as the fear.

welovetopsyandtim · 11/12/2013 06:55

Not as bad as you expect.

SpottyChristmasCakes · 11/12/2013 07:03

I had a forceps delivery first time round with episiotomy and extended second degree tear. It honestly didn't hurt at all. If you're worrying then take some lactose to soften it. I didn't feel any stinging when having a wee either.

The only thing I did feel was pressure on the stitches but not painful.

Congratulations Smile

Scoobyblue · 11/12/2013 09:54

Honestly, it's fine. Don't stress abt it (easier said than done I know). Congrats!

JoinTheDots · 11/12/2013 09:57

I had a poo about 20 minutes after giving birth and it was honestly just like normal. I was a little more careful when wiping though. And wow, these are words I never expected to write on the internet, or indeed tell to another person!

whereisthewitch · 11/12/2013 10:00

Use a warm facecloth on your fanjo and pee in the shower if you can.
I was so scared to poo that I ended up severely constipated....don't make that mistake! Drink lots of fruit juice and lactulose if needs be!

princesscupcakemummyb · 11/12/2013 10:18

it really wasent that bad at all it didnt hurt tbh

Doctorbrownbear · 11/12/2013 18:24

I was terrified and felt loads of pressure on episiotomy qnd stitches. It took ages and I was nearly crying with fear. I held a flannel on the stitches and they did sting a bit more afterwards but it wasn't quite as bad as I imagined. I would recommend running a bath to get in afterwards in case of stinging.

OneMoreThenNoMore · 11/12/2013 18:36

Lactulose is your friend, especially if you've been taking anything codeine based for pain relief as that can make you constipated.

Take your time. I never read on the loo but my first few times after birth I always take something to read to help me relax!

I've had two forceps deliveries and had an episiotomy and a second degree tear each time, and the fear of going for a poo was much worse than actually doing it! It was uncomfortable and I felt a lot of pressure, but it wasn't painful as such anal fissures a couple of weeks later smarted a bit though

I expected wees to be really painful too and took a little jug into hospital with me for pouring water on myself whilst weeing but it actually didn't hurt at all.

It'll be fine. Smile

Bad 2nd degree here with lots of stitches. Wee didn't hurt at all, poo was terrifying but absolutely fine. I found it helped to push back over the stitches with a pad so I was confident I wasn't falling apart (not that I would have! ).

Grotbagstwin · 11/12/2013 18:51

Poo was fine, I struggled to wee as I was very swollen so had the have a catheter, sadly mw didn't believe me about my 3 poo's in the 12 hours after the birth as I couldn't wee she thought I was fibbing!

yourcruisedirector · 11/12/2013 18:52

Bilabial stitches here. I poured warm water with a drop of tea tree oil over me and it was magic. Not that bad, but not particularly joyous either. It is my favourite pregnancy/labour tip learned from MN.

Congratulations by the way Grin

WeWishYouAWelliesChristmas · 11/12/2013 18:54

stitches here. I held a san pad to my nether regions and eased.

No midwife told me that mind you, MN was the education I needed

Topseyt · 11/12/2013 18:55

I found that dabbing sudocrem over my stitches before having a wee worked well.

I would say it wasn't too bad in the end, but the thought of it was more scary than the event.

spilttheteaagain · 11/12/2013 18:59

I had a nasty graze which meant the best way to wee was either in a shallow bath or a running shower for the first 10 days otherwise it really stung.

Poo wise, I seem to recall being terrified and feared all my insides would fall out somehow if I pushed, but they didn't. Just do it gently and for goodness sake do all you can to not be constipated! I was munching dried fruit like it would save my life Grin

laura2323 · 11/12/2013 19:45

Sorry in advance TMI warning!

I had forceps delivery with 3rd degree tear. Had catheter in for 12 hrs after delivery. I couldn't go by myself for a further 12 hrs but when I did it was heaven! Didn't sting one bit!

As for the first poo, the MWs at the hospital had me dosed up on lactulose (4doses a day) because of the tear. When I finally managed to go think "deli belly" but again it was heaven. The relief of going! Was a bit scary thought was emptying out (you did ask for the TMI stuff!!!). Like others have said I had sanitary towel against my stitches (thanks MN!).

Just relax and let your body do it on its own, don't force anything! Good luck! Xx

It was fine, I got given some fybolgel (there is probably other similar stuff) , it er...well, makes it all soft and you don't feel a thing, you also do not need to 'help' it out at all which is good when even the smallest bit of movement causes you rather a lot of pain (not that it is that bad after every birth...and anyway it turned out that I needed some slightly stronger pain killers than the ones that I had been given...).

I've also avoided codeine with DC's 2 and 3...

StarsAboveYou · 11/12/2013 22:30

The thought of it is worse than actually going ime.

I had a 3rd degree tear and was extremely worried but it turns out it was a bit of a non event.

As some PP said though I was given fybogel and lactulose which will definitely have helped.

Just try to relax and it will happen when your body is ready. I sound like I'm talking about labour there don't I?! Xmas Grin

Hope it's not to bad for you OP.

pickledsiblings · 11/12/2013 22:39

Pee in the bath just before you get out and then stand up and rise yourself.

Damnautocorrect · 11/12/2013 22:44

Why did I not get warned about the constipation?!?
I had a c section and literally didn't poo for a week.
Think it took as long as the labour and weighed as much, sorry!

FriendofDorothy · 11/12/2013 22:45

I had a second degree tear and found peeing really painful. For odour two weeks I stripped off all my clothes from the waist down and peed in the shower.

Pooing was ok. I also used the pad pressed against the stitches trick and it works well.

bluebeanie · 12/12/2013 01:38

2nd degree tear here Smile Peeing was fine. Did it before stiches. Pooping was fine - did it after and took full advantage of the local anaesthetic!

JollySantersSelectionBox · 12/12/2013 01:43

14 stitches here.

I wee'd in the bath the first time. The hot water was very relaxing.

I did rinse it well afterwards.

I used baby wipes for a while to wipe as I was a little tender in the undercarriage area.

MrsCakesPremonition · 12/12/2013 01:47

It was fine.

Witch hazel soaked on your pad is very soothing and will help the healing.
