Waterbirthers, did you wee in the pool?

Planning on having a waterbirth at home but the thought of clambering out of the pool and walking to the toilet for a wee and possibly having one or two contractions on dry land doesn't really appeal so I was thinking about just weeing in the pool because:

It will be diluted urine anyway from all the drinking I'll be doing.

It's going to get even more diluted from the volume of water in the pool, which is going to have water added and taken away throughout the course of the labor to maintain the temp.

I will probably be pooing in it, waters breaking in it and bleeding into it.

Urine is sterile.

So do you think this is gross? Have you done it? Did the midwives mind?

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 10/12/2013 19:57

yep, and poo'ed the midwife had a little colander thingy and discreetly scooped out the poo into the loo.

openerofjars · 10/12/2013 20:00

Weeing isn't the half of it: you will be advised to buy a sieve. A cheap, disposable sieve that you never have to lay eyes on again.

Also, your waters might go in the pool (she said, changing the subject brightly).

I loved my water birth, seriously, and cannot recommend it highly enough. I wanted to keep the pool forever.

All the best and good birth vibes to you. When are you due?

stargirl1701 · 10/12/2013 20:02

I have no idea. I was in the zone. Grin

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 10/12/2013 20:05

Not intentionally, but I quite possibly did without noticing. That said, I went to the loo before, was only in for about 40 minutes and had to empty my bladder after to budge the placenta, so possibly not.

capercaillie · 10/12/2013 20:06

Yes I did. Midwives said it was fine (and actively encouraged - I had a baby sitting on my bladder and causing all sorts of problems in that area!

ChoudeBruxelles · 10/12/2013 20:07

Probably. No idea really. You really aren't that bothered at the time

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 10/12/2013 20:11

Don't think so but was only in there for an hour at the very end

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 10/12/2013 21:37

Great that's good to know cos I really don't think I'll feel like getting in and out once in.

openerofjars Thanks, I'm due on the 16th it's my 3rd baby but never done it at home in water before (but always wanted to) midwives not totally happy as I've had a previous c-sect so classed as 'high risk' now but this time im doing what I want and a home waterbirth it is!

Not intentionally though they wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Water births are fab. I didn't feel the sting of DS' head crowning or have a single stitch after a 3rd degree tear with DD. Good luck op!

misskatamari · 11/12/2013 14:21

This is good to know as I'm planning a home water birth and have been a bit Confused at the thought of climbing our steel stairs for a wee! Pool it is! Grin

AmandaCooper · 12/12/2013 06:22

I would have if I'd needed to go; I wouldn't have got out! I'm pretty sure I didn't though because when I went to the loo shortly after the birth I weed about 6 litres!

AphraBane · 12/12/2013 06:28

You will pee. You might well crap. The midwife will sit there with her sieve and blithely sweep any - ahem - bits away. And this is the key part - you will not give a shiny shit. Seriously, water births are great. However, follow your instincts; for my first birth I was in the pool and suddenly felt the urge to get up again and walk around, which I did between every contraction until the birth. Second birth I stayed in the pool. Every birth is different - the pool is an option, it's not mandatory.

lolalotta · 12/12/2013 06:35

I didn't, I was only in there for 15mins before DD arrived! Grin

BettyMacdonald · 12/12/2013 06:37

Oh yes! In fact the midwife told me to. She said they'd be far worse in the pool by the time of finished. And there was Grin. YY to the sieve! Good luck, I've had 2 home water Keith's and they were fab

BettyMacdonald · 12/12/2013 06:39

Um. That'll be birth. I've not had 2 home Keith's Blush. There is a preview message button for a reason........

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 12/12/2013 06:44

I wasn't aware though my waters did go in the pool, the mw told me. I was determined not to get out of the pool but actually did go sit on the toilet during transition as it was so comfortable! Tmi alert - D&V in early labour pretty much cleared me out of everything so although I felt like I wanted to wee to ease the pressure there wasn't really anything there!

On another note, which pool are you using, OP? I am looking for a home birth this time and thinking of hiring a pool so recommendations welcome!

misskatamari · 12/12/2013 06:55

I'm trying to decide which to get at the moment too. I'm leaning towards hiring a hard sided one that comes with heater and filter but we did look at inflatable ones at nct class this weekend and they were much sturdier than I imagined so now I'm not sure.

Hiring a hard one is pricey but then I think - this isn't exactly something I want to scrimp of in the grand scheme of baby related things. You can also fill them in advance as they keep the water filtered, so you can use it prior to birth for relaxing in etc.

misskatamari · 12/12/2013 06:57

this site had some different options

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 12/12/2013 07:33

I LOVE the look of the heated filtered ones but I'm not sure I can justify the expense...

BeansAndCheese · 12/12/2013 08:06

Glad to read this thread as I was hoping it would be the case. Last time I could not pee at all and it made the pain so much worse! Midwife put a tube in to help. Then later on I just wet myself and really didn't care (transition). Was hoping warm water would make it easier!

Seff · 14/12/2013 08:21

I don't know if I peed actually. Not sure I would have noticed. I didn't notice pooing, although I was the one that spotted it!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 14/12/2013 10:34

Jellyandcake if you can stretch to a heated pool then I'd say definitely get one. I've got an inflatable one (la bassine) and have used it three times this week because it's sooo lush and relaxing but it's such a faff filling it up and emptying it each time that I really wish we had invested in a heated pool. And this is with a water pump.

This being my 3rd and last baby I couldn't really justify the cost though! However I'm determined now, after experiencing the lushness that is wallowing in a hot pool of water that when we come to extending our living room I'm not just having a conservatory with bamboo furniture (oh no) I'm having a hot tub installed! Bliss!

Wee will be the least of what goes in the pool! Have a bucket and sieve handy Grin

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 14/12/2013 10:53

Breastmilk, it's my second and last and my first was such a quick labour (5.5 hrs) I am really doubtful about spending the money on a heated pool. My mum had her second baby in 90 mins! It would be SO lovely though, especially in the days leading up to labour. A hot tub in a conservatory sounds like a dream!!
