Did you feel the ring of fire?

Because I don't think I did when DD was born and I had no pain medication at all. Am I deluding myself and have just forgotten about it?

No, for me the transition was the worst bit both times. By the time crowning happened I was too focussed on getting the baby out to notice the ring of fire thing. Had a second degree tear the first time and a smaller one the second time.

Nope (very similar experience to bot )
I had gas and air for an hour while in active labour, then nothing for pushing, I was very numb down there. When his head came out, it felt like pressure and stretching and my tummy when down when he came out!

The needle they injected me with after to get the placenta out hurt more and the injection in my leg - she stabbed me it bruised so much!

Weeing hurt loads to after. Pregnancy changes your body so much , the shock of what you look like after giving birth e,g saggy tummy , hurty bits, took my mind of what I had just done lol.

PattieOfurniture · 22/07/2013 09:43

Yes I did, I tore too and he was only a titchy 6lb 4oz

Ouch!
But thankfully it didn't last too long then he was out

2nd ds was emcs

Lorelei353 · 22/07/2013 10:54

I felt it stinging but it wasn't as bad as the pressure of the contractions before it and it was only short-lived, followed by amazing relief as he came out. Was a water birth though.

CuppaSarah · 22/07/2013 11:11

I remember it, I remember thinking 'if this is just the ring of fire what's pushing her going to be like?!'

Then she was plopped on my chest a second later. I was given a catheter and once that had done it's job she literally flew out in one push. I was a bit in shock.

BellEndTent · 22/07/2013 11:12

I have had two natural births and definitely felt it both times. iI had gone into a strange, altered state by this time where I was very aware that it was hurting but my mind wasn't completely concentrating on feeling it iyswim but I still know that it bloody well hurt! Perhaps this is what happened to you?

YokoUhOh · 22/07/2013 11:16

YES it was the worst bit of the whole thing - I was so relieved when the MW offered me an episiotomy! And then not so relieved when DS turned and gave me a 3a tear. He was only 6lb 7oz...

Jo1984uk · 22/07/2013 11:59

Can't say I remember that either... I did have a vontouse delivery though if that makes any difference?!

To be honest, I can't say I remember any pain during delivery (no pain relief) only remember pain during the contractions around transition (with gas and air, amazing stuff that!) Then again, after pushing for 3 hrs I just wanted her out Smile

justhayley · 22/07/2013 13:52

Sweet Jesus yes! You've made me just tighten my lady bits thinking of it lol. That's got to be one of the worst bits of labour. I had no pain relief not even gas and had a 5lbs 3 baby. The thought of pushing out a normal size one freaks me out because of the burning

PickleSarnie · 22/07/2013 14:13

Yes. Stung like hell. No pain relief though and a child with a head above the 99.4 percentile line. Was bound to smart slighty.

rosyryan · 22/07/2013 21:18

I am weeping at the emergency spaniel

Badvoc · 22/07/2013 21:25

Yep.
With both.
Actually felt myself tear with ds2 with his 38cm head

Jojay · 22/07/2013 21:32

Yep ,and I felt myself tear too. Niiiice Grin

Hashtagwhatever · 22/07/2013 21:35

No pain relief with any of 4 dc but my god yes, thats the worst bit. Was like someone holding a blowtorch to my fanwar.

PoppyWearer · 22/07/2013 21:37

Not first time - had to have an episiotomy against my initial wishes because DC1 got a bit stuck (big head).

DC2 I did indeed, and then some (big nose - midwife said that was what did the damage).

Owwww!

eccentrica · 22/07/2013 21:41

nope. dd weighed 6 lb 4 and was born under water. no burning. just her bony head!

bigkidsdidit · 22/07/2013 21:43

No, I didn't really feel pain as such, just overwhelming pressure. A bit Chinese burny but not bad. I had a massive second degree tear that I didn't feel either. DS was 9-10 and back to back which seems to have ended up with pain free but pressure. Weird. For a week after the birth I couldn't wee without thinking my bum was going to fall out Confused

quertas · 22/07/2013 21:53

Ok, maybe I'm weird but this was the bit of labour I most...well not enjoyed obviously...but felt most WOW!!!! about. I had it worse with dc1 but both times once I've actually felt the head moving I've been blown away by amazement. For what it's worth I swear I felt ears both times, so maybe I was a bit out of it! Grin

BillStickersIsInnocent · 22/07/2013 22:01

Arf at emergency spaniel. I dread to think what my spaniel would have made of the delivery room Grin

Oh god yes. With DD (9lb) it was awful. Thought I was being ripped in half. DS (10lb 4) was better. I was really dreading crowning after my first birth but it wasn't as bad. Had a third degree tear with him though but was stitched up under a spinal so didn't feel a thing. Unlike 2nd degree tear with DD, done under a local. Excruciating. And the MW calling DH over to have a look and tell her "where this bit goes" did not fill me with confidence I can tell you.

BurnThisDiscoDown · 22/07/2013 22:07

Yes - it made me giggle because I'd watched US OBEM previously and there'd been a lady screaming "oh my god, it's like a burning ring of fire" with backing music of Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash (and I was a teeny but hysterical by this point). When I felt it the song popped into my head and made me laugh. I think the bit I remember most is DS actually coming out, it felt really weird but lovely because I knew he was nearly here.

MrsShrek3 · 22/07/2013 22:10

you've made me cross my legs. ds1 yes massively. ds2 for a few seconds and by number three no need as everything was stretched to buggery anyway and she was my smallest...

Oh pleeeease can I have an emergency spaniel?
DCs1&2 just felt their bony heads filling entire pelvis for hours in and out they went - urgh. Swear I could feel their bony noses getting stuck (yes I know, but that is what it felt like!) .
With DCs3&4 I definitely felt it... They came out much quicker and I didn't have the bone grating feeling, just the 'pull your bottom lip up over your head' stretchy burny owwwwww feeling.

curlew · 24/07/2013 06:22

Of all the dogs you might choose in an emergency- spaniel does not come top of the list.........

janey68 · 26/07/2013 09:35

At NCT classes we were taught to prepare for this bit by putting a finger in each side of our mouth and pulling sideways. When it started to burn, our teacher said 'now imagine if your fingers continued to pull....'

Yes, I felt it both times, though first was the worst, big baby and no pain relief. I felt like I was tearing in two (actually I did tear skin and muscle so I guess I was!) and honestly thought I'd die.

Have to say it was very empowering too , and I distinctly remember feeling after dc1 slithered out that I would never again feel fear, having lived through that experience
