Anyone given birth naturally to a child over 91b 9oz??

Ok just looking for some advice from anyone who has given birth to large babies.
I'm TTC no3 and I literally cannot put into words how terrified I am of childbirth, large babies and possible c sections. I am terrified of having a large baby because the possibility of a c-section is just horrifying for me, and it sounds ridiculous but the thought of someone slicing my stomach open has me literally shaking.

My first was 8 1b 13oz delivered at 39 weeks and naturally.
My second was 9 1b 9. She was born within one hour and half of me being in labour. Naturally. With both I had episiotomy. The pain of birthing my dd still haunts me, I am not exaggerating when i say I can still feel the pain of her coming out. She's 2.5years old and it has not gone away.

Now my thinking is dc3 is blatantly going to be big, and In all likelihood much bigger than dd.
What happens then. What if he's ten pounds will it even be possible to do it naturally so quick? My labours have been scarily quick.
Has anyone here managed it?
I was wondering if they would offer me an elcs on the basis of my history of large babies? I don't want one though but if im likely to need an emcs I'd rather have it planned I guess. Do you have to be awake?

I hope someone can advise me, and you would think after doing it twice I wouldn't be like this.

DS was 11lb 7oz.

He was a forceps delivery in theatre, with a spinal (as they suspected they may have do to CS). I had attempted to have him at home in a pool, but the bugger wasn't shifting after early 4 hours of pushing.

That was a far, far nicer experience than my induction with DD, where I had an epidural, forceps, and tore.

I don't think his size was the issue (he wasn't stuck as in shoulder dystocia stuck) but I was on my back pushing after 4 hours (so MW could see what was happening, despite that not being the optimum position for getting a baby out!) and the MW suspected he was transverse, which he wasn't, but he was in a crappy position.

I'd do it again, happily. His birth was massively cathartic after DD's, despite ending up in theatre, with forceps and an episiotomy.

I haven't but my bf has and she's about 5'4" and quite slim. She gave birth in the pool at the local birth centre.

I think it might be beneficial for you to have a look at the birth trauma association to help you come to terms with your last birth. It might also be worthwhile looking into getting a debrief too.

I don't think you are being silly over an section either. The thought of it really didnt appeal to me either, all of my friends had them and I have recovered much quickly too. Although I would have had one if needed obviously. I've also read somewhere that it is more beneficial, in most circumstances, for the baby to go through sone labour, even if it is delivered by c-section in the end.

Iris1 · 16/01/2013 12:17

Thank you both.
Wow 11lb 7oz vaginally is some achievement. Knowing this has made me feel better.
Thank you for the link jilted I will have a good look.
See giving birth naturally scares me, especially since I know what it's like with zero paid for relief and I know that's gonna happen again. I I can literally just about Get my head round doing it. The thought of a c section though makes me want to cry, and has me shaking with fear as if I was going to be killed by it.
I would want to do it naturally and I have been debating home birthday as my labour was shockingly quick, I guess I just couldn't imagine a baby any bigger than my last fitting out without complications.

DD was only 9lb 14oz (never thought I'd say that but after reading that...) and I had her pretty naturally (tens plus g&a) - I know what you mean about still feeling baby coming out.. It was a pain like no other, but having pushed for 2 hours with DS (9lb 7oz) before I ever felt the urge (they told me to) and then had an epidural/episiotomy/forceps delivery I'd take the natural 'listen to my body and push when I feel I want to' way of doing it every time.

I would strongly advise you do some reading on the tension-fear-pain theory and learn about breathing techniques (I did in through nose for a count of 4, out through mouth for as long as I could) if not listen to a cd on natal hypnotherapy. Your body (usually) knows how to give birth, especially if you've done it before, you just need to let it. I imagined I was blowing the pain out through my mouth with each contraction, got to about 5cm dilated before asking for the g&a. I actually enjoyed the experience as I felt empowered and in control. I wouldn't have thought that possible after DS (back to back, strapped to the bed etc) but it's true, I was determined for things to go differently and so I focused on trying to relax. Good luck, there's every reason you can do it if you want to

NewYearNewBoo · 16/01/2013 12:21

Hi, ds2 was 10lb 3.5 oz, natural delivery with just gas and air (and a few stitches). Really it was ok, I was told that when you push a little baby out it can move back in after each contraction but big 'uns stay where you put them so can actually be delivered quicker.

Try not to worry, I am pregnant again too, and not too concerned about baby size.

Sparkleandshine · 16/01/2013 12:22

had DS1 at 9lb 2 and DS2 at 10lb 6

had no issues with DS2.

Moominsarescary · 16/01/2013 12:24

Ds1 was 11lb 2, I had a vb with forcepts and a spinal. It was fine although uncomforyable afterwards as youd expect

When I had ds2 a women across from me had a10lb I think 6oz vb without needing forcepts

SirBoobAlot · 16/01/2013 12:28

I second the suggestion of speaking to someone about birth trauma. Go through your notes, with someone qualified to help you.

Also, try to change the way you're thinking about this. You're going in thinking "I'm going to end up with an EMCS", and that a DC3 would definitely be bigger, when there is no certainty of those, and that in itself will add to your nerves. Have a look at Birth Without Fear, do some hypnobirthing and look at contacting a doula if you can.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/01/2013 12:37

Agree with Sir, also try to concentrate on why you are doing this Smile

Fianccetto · 16/01/2013 12:37

DMIL and 2 DSILs gave birth to (in total, between them) 8 DCs, all over 10 lbs, all naturally.

Mine were the other extreme with size, but I did have 2 emergency c-sections. For the second one, I was awake. It was amazing.

I am completely with you over elective X-sections, it isn't something I would advise choosing to do. However, in the event of an emergency, a c section is life saving and having a small scar along my 'bikini line' (side to side, they never do it up/down now) is a small price to pay for being alive and having 2 healthy children.

My guess is, the fear is your mind preparing you for natural birth. Use it, and be stronger for it. If, in the hospital, they say you need to have a section, you will do it.

Fianccetto · 16/01/2013 12:40

Obviously, I didn't have a x section. Can't type for laughing now.

HeyHeySaturday · 16/01/2013 12:49

Sorry for quick post.
Ds1 was 9lb 9 oz epidural, episiotomy, tear, forceps, lots of stitches etc 12 hrs
Ds2 was 8lb 3oz (back to back) natural just g&a small tear, no stitches 4hrs
Dd was 10lb 6oz natural just g&a tear, couple of stitches 2 hrs

I truly believe that for me avoiding the epidural was the key. I felt in control and one big push and she was out. The benefit of big babies (assuming a good lie of course) is that gravity really helps. I was in the shower and having a cup of tea within 30 mins. I was clear with the midwives about my wish to minimise intervention and they really helped me. I have no lasting damage from my three dc's although wouldn't trust myself on a trampoline

Nooneelseisallowedafergus · 16/01/2013 12:56

Ds2 was 9lb 11. Easy birth, no tears.
Ds1 was 7lb 2. Fairly easy, but grade 1 tear.

I am 5ft 8 and slim build.

lljkk · 16/01/2013 12:59

I know a lady who had a baby who was over 12 lbs vaginally. That was all fine. The next baby who was about 8.5lb was a problem and ended up being born by CS. You really can't tell.

Branleuse · 16/01/2013 13:02

my ds2 was 10lb exactly and born on my living room floor, with no pain relief and no stitches.

I certainly felt that one!!

annelid · 16/01/2013 13:04

I have 7 dc, and thought I would add my experience for you, in the hope of it helping.

These are my dc birth weights (g,g,b,b,g,b,b)

8lb 3oz, 9lb, 9lb 10oz, 11lb, 9lb 1oz, 9lb 12oz, 10lb 12oz

I'm 5'4", size 10, never had any problems delivering. I had a couple of stitches with my second. Longest labour 8 hours, which was my first, they then got quicker!

For me it was important to stay upright and active during labour. I usually end up delivering whilst leaning over the top of the bed.

MacaroniAndWalnut · 16/01/2013 13:11

Yes three times

From what I understand the size of te baby bares little relation to the difficulty or ease of the birth.

Fwiw my first was long and awful. Second and third a breeze (10lb 5 and 10lb 8 respectively

I myself am not large although I'm tall I'm quite narrow

HecateWhoopass · 16/01/2013 13:12

yup.

2 x ten and a half pound babies.

My second could have walked out, I won't lie to you Wink

HobKnob · 16/01/2013 13:13

DD2 was 10lb 6 and only took about an hour.

They kept telling me not to push and I didn't- but I could feel her moving down anyway. I only pushed for the very last bit, and didn't have a single tear, scratch, graze, anything.

So my advice would be to let your body do as much as possible.

MrsMiniversCharlady · 16/01/2013 13:13

I had a 10lb 13oz baby at home in a pool with no other pain relief (after 2 cesareans - eeek!!)

HobKnob · 16/01/2013 13:14

macaroon love your description of yourself as tall and narrow, you sound like a Victorian chest of drawers. Grin

PeachActiviaMinge · 16/01/2013 13:16

My first was 10lb 4 I was in labour for 3 hours had 2 stitches and just gas and air. I'm pregnant again and under a lot of monitoring this time for size but honestly I'm not that scared as everything just went so well the first time around Smile Just relax your body knows what its doing you've done it twice already so its old hat Smile

BlueStringPudding · 16/01/2013 13:17

DC3 was 10lb 4.5oz and although he did briefly get a little stuck due to shoulder dystocia, they did the McRoberts maneuvere and he came out quickly. I was surprised when they said how big he was, as it was fine. Just gas and air, no tear or stitches..

firsttimemama · 16/01/2013 13:21

First was 7lb10oz epidural and ventouse 12 hours second was 9lb 10oz Gas and Air and Metfib (Sp?) 7 hours.

fivesacrowd · 16/01/2013 13:22

Dd1 was 7lb10oz at 37 weeks and was nightmare birth, ds whopping 10lbs fired out after 3 hours labour, dd2 9lbs 7oz far too much fluid and sailed out whilst flooding labour ward! My boy was the easiest and I was told at the time that bigger babies build up more momentum and so delivery is easier. Hard not to worry, but I was prepped for cs with third and asked if I could at least try myself so they let me and I managed on gas & air. Good luck
