Anyone given birth naturally to a child over 91b 9oz??

Ok just looking for some advice from anyone who has given birth to large babies.
I'm TTC no3 and I literally cannot put into words how terrified I am of childbirth, large babies and possible c sections. I am terrified of having a large baby because the possibility of a c-section is just horrifying for me, and it sounds ridiculous but the thought of someone slicing my stomach open has me literally shaking.

My first was 8 1b 13oz delivered at 39 weeks and naturally.
My second was 9 1b 9. She was born within one hour and half of me being in labour. Naturally. With both I had episiotomy. The pain of birthing my dd still haunts me, I am not exaggerating when i say I can still feel the pain of her coming out. She's 2.5years old and it has not gone away.

Now my thinking is dc3 is blatantly going to be big, and In all likelihood much bigger than dd.
What happens then. What if he's ten pounds will it even be possible to do it naturally so quick? My labours have been scarily quick.
Has anyone here managed it?
I was wondering if they would offer me an elcs on the basis of my history of large babies? I don't want one though but if im likely to need an emcs I'd rather have it planned I guess. Do you have to be awake?

I hope someone can advise me, and you would think after doing it twice I wouldn't be like this.

My dc4 was 11lb and born at home with no pain relief. No stitches. I remained upright and walking around during the entire labour. It was my most difficult delivery, because of the sheer effort it took to deliver his head and shoulders, but the most wonderful experience. I had a scan at 36 weeks that said he was average sized, so no one expected him to be so big!

I am expecting dc5 and I feel confident enough for another home birth. I practiced lots of visualisation techniques, like blowing the pain away, and riding the waves Grin

I was told that a Cs would not be an option at all just because of previous large for dates, and that I might be offered early induction, (which I would refuse).

Mummabubbles · 16/01/2013 13:49

Ds was 10lb8oz, 1hour labour no pain relief no stitches. Next baby due in 9 weeks, looks like another whopper! Hope it comes out as easily.....

Iris1 · 16/01/2013 15:20

Wow thank you so much every one of you has really helped me feel better.
I feel better knowing how possible it is to have a baby over 10lb naturally and how many of you have done it without pain relief. I expect that's the situation I would end up in again. I really wouldn't want pain relief now though, and not after I have done it without and had the blessing of no horrible side effects.
I will definitely read up on birth trauma and try to deal with my fears. The advise about hypnobirthing is great ill be looking for as much information as possible. I'm also so glad to see those of you who have managed it at home as well as ideally that is what I'd like to do.
Looks like I need to do lots of preparing to make sure next time I feel more positive.
Obviously if it came to an emergency I would have section. I'm going to see what is can do about overcoming my c section fear.

DS1 was 11lbs.

Homebirth. No stitches.

AlphaAndEcho · 16/01/2013 17:32

Ds was 9.14 . G&A then had a dose of pethidine but was too late and he was born 10 mins later before the pethidine had kicked in . No stitches tiny superficial tear that healed on it's own .

DD was only 7lbs and I had lots of pethidine G&A and was pushing her out for over two hours and had second degree tear .

So ime size does not mean more difficult birth . Hth Smile

Floralnomad · 16/01/2013 17:38

My first was 10lb3oz , long labour ,normal delivery with an episiotomy . Horrendous recovery requiring blood transfusions and lots of fainting! I elected for a section with my second and it was fantastic , no problems post birth , out of hospital in 3 days ( same as with 1st) , driving at 2 weeks and doing everything normally. If i could have my time again I would have 2 sections !

blondiep14 · 16/01/2013 17:43

I also had a whopper naturally, DS1 was 8lb 1oz and DS2 was 10lb 1oz, both very similar, natural labours, g&a.
DS2 probably easier as once I'd sat on the loo to get him in poition, he more or less fell out! Also his head was only half a cm bigger than DS1's.

Had DD1 in September and she was 9lb 3oz so your DC3 could be smaller too.

blondiep14 · 16/01/2013 17:47

Oops, wasn't quite done!

I had hypnobirthing (Maggie Howell) cd in preparation, and a water birth for DC3. Was very sceptical beforehand, am now evangelical!
Made such a difference to my panic levels, pain threshold, everything!

mummysmellsofsick · 16/01/2013 17:51

DS was 9lb born naturally, but my niece was just under 11lb and was born at home with no pain relief, didn't cause even a tear (although she is my sister's 2nd DC and everyone tells me the second is easier)

LaGuerta · 16/01/2013 18:04

I would buy Ina May Gaskin's "guide to childbirth" which completely changed my thinking about the subject. I would also buy the most appropriate Natal Hypnotherapy CD for your circumstances.

BTW DS1 was 9lb 13oz hideous induction took every drug going, then finally an EMCS

DS2 was smaller although still a sizeable 8lb 9oz but completely natural VBAC. No gas and air. The natal hypnotherapy was very effective in helping me get over DS1's birth and prepare for a VBAC so that on the day I was very calm and not panicy.

A Mnetter suggested Ina May when I was expecting DS2 and I will always be grateful for that. Smile

My friend's DC3 was 10lb4oz and she managed with just a bit of gas and air. No tears/grazes. In fact she said it was her easiest birth. The amount of trauma you sustain isn't all to do with size. My DD1 was only 6lb3oz (at 34+6) but I had to go to theatre the next day for a bit of a sort out. I gave birth to her on my back/semi sitting and in a hurry as her heart rate was hovering around 40bpm. The next two I delivered on all fours. Both bigger babies and neither caused any tearing. That must say something!

Ushy · 16/01/2013 18:51

HeyHey you said "I truly believe that for me avoiding the epidural was the key" Do't you think it is more likely that you had the tear because it was your first baby?

They've done lots of research on this and epidurals don't increase tearing - in fact some research shows it slightly reduces it. First births, however, do definitely increase the risk of a tear.

Wouldn't want to scare anyone unnecessarily out of an epidural for a large baby because it can be excruciating and an epi might be needed.

Thanks so much everyone who has contributed here, it has really helped me.
There must be a lot of truth in bigger babies being easier to deliver then, and thinking about it being in labour for Only 90minutes I guess could have been down to size.
I have never heard about larger babies thinning cervix and gravity making it easier though so that's great information.
I do appreciate dc3 may not be bigger but I'm guessing it's very likely to be bigger or around a similar size.
I'm going to buy the recommended book and a hypnobirthing book and cd. I think it will really help me. I'm going to look into ways that you avoid tearing/episiotomy as well as although I didn't feel it, the sight of her scissors going near me definitely freaked me right out. I've now had two and hated them.
For those of you who have said you tore/were cut but then didn't with a subsequent birth was there anything you think you did that contributed to that particularly?

I had stitches for both DS's but not DD.
mw said that a water birth helps with not tearing as everything is more supply and stretchy, skin-wise!

Not sure if that is an option for you but worth considering if so.

marjean · 16/01/2013 19:26

12lb 13oz here. At home, just gas and air.Was no. 3.
No tears but suspect positioning (upright) and water birth helped.
Dont know if it has been mentioned before but bigbaby.org is a great website for those in search of information about birthing suspected big babies.
Best of luck.

Chocaholics · 16/01/2013 19:39

A friend had a 12lb 4oz all natural no epidural and no stitches required. She said it was all very straight forward and easy although the midwife did swear when she weighed him and they had no clothes that fit!

My midwife told me bigger babies are often easier due to gravity. No idea if its true!

NinthWavingAtTheSnowman · 16/01/2013 19:55

DS1 was 9lb6, natural labour but had shoulder dystocia and nearly lost him. DS2 was induced at term, had epidural, pushed him out easily with no cut, tears or stitches- he was 10lb6!

happy2bhomely · 16/01/2013 20:41

I would just like to add that big babies are not always easier to deliver, nor do they just crawl out all by themselves thanks to gravity! Still Angry at MIL for suggesting so! Of course some people find it works that way, but it annoys me when people seem to think I just sneezed and out popped a baby!

My smallest was 8 pounds and was soooooo much easier to deliver than the others who weighed 8.13, 9.7 and 11lb. She literally slid out without any pushing whatsoever. The heaviest one was the hardest work of my life and the most intense thing I have ever experienced. 3years on I am still suffering from back and pelvic pain caused by his birth.

Different bodies, different babies, different positions, different health conditions and different care all contribute to the experience of childbirth. Keep an open mind and keep your fingers crossed, because when it comes down to it, it's mostly down to luck!

blessedmummyov4 · 18/01/2013 13:50

My 3rd was 9lb 11 oz n was probably the easiest of all my births just gas n air no stitches

1st : 8lb 6.5 oz b
2nd: 6lb 7oz g
3rd : 9lb 11oz b
4th : 8lb 11oz g
5th : find out in July :)

Just coz uv had big before don't mean next one will b mayb u shud talk to your midwife about ur fears I was induced wiv my second due to the fear ov cb after my 1st had a really nasty tear was still in agony 7 months after birth talking to her n consultant really helped they thot second baby was gonna b big and induced me at 38 wks , good luck xx

AlphaAndEcho · 18/01/2013 18:07

I'm really not sure why I tore with my wee 7lbs-er but then didn't with ds . Possibly the length of time pushing ? I was pushing for over two hours with DD but only 10 mins with ds . That could possibly contributed ? That is total guesswork though . Also when I had DD I was being told when to push but with ds I pushed when I felt myself so that could possibly be a reason too ?

5madthings · 18/01/2013 18:21

Mine were 8lb 7oz b
9lb 3oz b
9lb 5oz b
10lb 13oz b
8lb g

The easiest was ds4 lab our less than an hour, had him in the birth pool.

The hardest was dd who was the smallest but she was back to back, still a natural lab our with copious amounts of g&a, lab our was 3 hrs.

squiggleywiggler · 18/01/2013 22:44

I just posted this 11lb 2 oz homebirth story - my client didn't even need any stitches! hackneydoula.co.uk/?p=801
