or is everyone saying that to be kind?

I'm old and it took best part of two days last time.

Also..if I was a week late last time do you reckon I'm likely to be this time?

yes.
ds was induced and I spent 8 hours in labour before emergency cs.
dd was 4/5 hours from when I woke up with contractions to her natural delivery.

PrettyCandles · 20/04/2006 14:03

First time, I was 35, ds was 39.5wks, pre-labour was about 36h (JUST DON'T TELL ME I WASN'T IN LABOUR - GRRRRR), then 12h until the birth itself. Actually pushing for about 1.5h.

Second time, I was 37, dd was 41wks, pre-labour was probably about 18h, including a 3h gap when everything stopped, then 6h until the birth itself. Actually pushing for about 20m. I don't know when I would have been considered to have entered established labour, as this time I wasn't examined until I yelled "I want to push!".

PeachyClair · 20/04/2006 14:06

Not in my case actually- ds2 was a back labour BUT it was a gentle long birth rather than fast and furious so I genuinely did not mind one bit.
Especially as I was attended by an aromatherapist MW in my unit- Sooooo relaxing

motherinferior · 20/04/2006 14:07

Yes, they usually are; the way a midwife put it to me when I wrote an article on this was it's like 'programming a computer: your body has to do it once to get it right'. Not always, though.

CAT me if you want the full article.

And incidentally my first birth was a total nightmare, my second was seven hours (short for me!) very straightforward, at home.

MamaG · 20/04/2006 14:09

With DD I was 24 and took 29 hours. Pushed for 1 1/2 hours.

With DS I was 29 and took 2 hours. Pushed for 5 mins. Yes, 5 mins. ouch.

JackieNo · 20/04/2006 14:09

Definitely in my case, and I was 35 first time, 39 second time. Quicker, easier - I guess everything's a bit, ahem, looser second time round. Well for me, anywayGrin.

OMG posted 4 times not 3! Sorry again...

oliveoil · 20/04/2006 14:11

dd1: laboured for ever, then she was in distress so had emergency section.

dd2: within 3 hours of being in hospital, I delivered. The m/w said this was fast as I hadn't actually given birth before iyswim.

coppertop · 20/04/2006 14:11

The 2nd time was much faster for me. With ds1 I had 40hrs of established labour. With ds2 it was only 6hrs.

I've only ever had inductions so I don't know whether ds2 would've been born late if things had happened more naturally.

suzywong · 20/04/2006 14:12

No

They aren't

jamsam · 20/04/2006 14:15

oh yes they are..i went from 9 1/2 hours with ds1 to 23 minutes withds2...beat that!

robin3 · 20/04/2006 14:17

Jamsam...you've made my day.

Thanks everyone!

Was for me. 9.25 hours first time. 5.75 hours second time.

kate100 · 20/04/2006 14:21

True for me
ds1 - 27 hours, 2 hours pushing
ds2 - 12 hours, 25 minutes pushing
second time A LOT better

tortoiseshell · 20/04/2006 14:23

ds - 12 days late, about 13 hours of labour, pushing for about an hour and a half

dd - 14 days late, 3 1/2 hours of labour, 2 pushes and she was out!

jamsam · 20/04/2006 14:28

when i say 23 minutes, thats start to finish..literrally. i had a student midwife with me and i think she was more in shock than me, i literally got one leg on the bed and there he was..no wonder they couldnt get a heart beat!!!!

robin3 · 20/04/2006 14:30

Do you think you were a lot less tired post-birth then?

OP posts:
jamsam · 20/04/2006 14:34

yeah, i drove me, baby, exp and ds1 home the next morning then went onto become a single parent with two ds's the following week..so a lot less tired!

robin3 · 20/04/2006 14:35

Just as well then!

OP posts:
Bozza · 20/04/2006 15:00

Well I went into labour about 3 am both times. I think main difference though was so much pushing involved with getting DS out. Also had DD at home so could sleep that night - only woke when she did. Whereas with DS it was like a railway station all night on the ward.
