Anyone used one in this area and can give a recommendation?

Thanks in advance for your help

Well done and congrats bossykate - and thanks for starting this thread, I'm looking at South London Independent m/ws myself now

Just decided to drop the birth centre because they won't come up with a package that my insurance would cover plus I find their very business-like approach quite annoying. Could someone recommend an independent midwife in south london/tooting? someone you were really impressed by?

bossykate · 10/01/2006 17:49

annie francis and teresa arias from south london independent midwives were fantastic. i recommend without reservation.

vnique · 10/01/2006 18:10

thanks for that. Aren't the south london independent midwives going to be a bit pushy about a home birth? i feel the need to go to hospital...

bossykate · 10/01/2006 18:14

er, yes, they will. in fact you will not be able to get independent midwives to deliver you in hospital anywhere in this area - they are not insured to do so. if a labour at home needs to trf to hospital, then the midwives accompany the mother and can act as advocates, but cannot deliver the baby.

what exactly is it you're looking for?

vnique · 10/01/2006 18:17

i am looking for support from a private midwife during birth, someone who would make sure i don't get a caeserian that i don't need, etc. as well as post natal support once the nhs send me back home no doubt swiftly after the birth...

bossykate · 10/01/2006 20:00

have you considered a doula? they act as advocates for women during labour (thereby addressing the unnecessary c section angle) and also provide post-natal support after the birth - in a much more practical, hands-on way than a midwife would, e.g. she would come round and tidy up, cook etc as well as making sure you and the baby are ok.

perhaps this would be a better option if you really want a hospital birth.

is there any particular reason you don't want a homebirth? i have done it in hospital and at home and at home was a bazillion times better and easier.

will consider a doula now that I know it exists... for some reason home birth scares me a little though

has anybody tried Regent's Independent Midwifery?

I had South London Independent Midwives four times over. They are brilliant, gifted, angelic, fabulous .... I really can't rate them highly enough. I'm going to their party at the weekend as we stay in touch.

They helped me through four pregnancies and births and I will be grateful to them (and one woman in particular) all my life.

Feel free to CAT me if you want to know more.

I also really rate Annie, Tina and Teresa from South London Independent Midwives who helped me deliver both my babies at home. They were simply wonderful and I cannot recommend them highly enough!!

bossykate · 16/01/2006 15:01

oh, i might drop in at the party, or i might not!

Spidermama · 16/01/2006 16:43

Aren't they great choccywoccy?

So maybe see you there bossykate? It's normally a good do with lovely food.
