my first one is due in august i think it will be much more comftable to be in a huge bath for twelve or more hours than in a sweaty labour room

I had one. I was only in the water for eight minutes, but during those eight minutes the baby crowned, came out in three pushes, and whizzed out. I can completely recommend them.

fabulous, fabulous way to do it. you feel much more mobile and the water helped with the pain enormously. added bonus is that baby comes out washed so you dont have to scrub the dried on yeuch out of their hair Grin

was the best of all 3 of my deliveries, very positive experience.

if you are at all anaemic make sure you take your iron tablets as you cant go in the water if you are too low

SnowdropsInTheSpring · 20/03/2006 14:08

Who arranges it for you? Might enquire at hosp tomorrow....

I know with my ds i had a bath in the hosp and i had hardly any pains.

lovelybird · 20/03/2006 14:08

my son was born in January 2005 and I spent most of my labour in a birthing pool and would really recommend it. He is my first baby and I had a long labour - 35 hours from start to finish but only 11 of those were in established labour in hospital. I have always considered myself a complete wimp about pain and throughout my pregnancy said I would have an epidural, when I phoned the hospital and told them I was going in I told them to get the epidural ready! They started me off on gas & air as I was 3cm dialted when I got there, and after about 5 hours I had had enough and wanted stronger pain relief as I was in agony by then, and the midwife suggested I try the birthing pool. It was not something I had considered before as I was aiming for hard drugs but gave it a go. She said if I didn't like it I could get out and move onto pethidine, but once I had had pethidine I couldn't use the pool. Once I got into the pool the relief was enormous and I still had gas & air and spent the next 5 hours in there and it was fab. I was still in a lot of pain but the water was very relaxing and I do think it helped me. In the end I had to get out for the last hour as DS head was stuck so I needed a bit of help so had nothing for the last hour. I would really recommend it, I feel it helped me enormously, without it I would have been on the hard stuff! I hope to be able to use it again when I have another baby. My advice would be to keep an open mind about labour, see how you feel, use the birthing pool if you can and if you need drugs then have them. You don't get a medal for having a natural birth!

Yes, I useda birthing pool. with DS1 in the hospital, I got out as it was hurting me, but the bloody midwife didn't check me and let me get out and go over to the other room. If she'd checked me in the pool she would;ve realised that DS1's head was almost there and he could've been born in the water. It sped up the labour a hell of a lot too.
With DS2 at home I used the birthing pool but wasn't allowed to give birth in it as the MW weren't qualified for a water birth. However I promised the I would get out as soon as I felt I had to. They let me use it and it was great, again it really sped things up (DS2 was 4 hours from first conctraction to the time he came out!)

I would really recommended it! Hope everything goes well for you!

At what stage did you ask mw about using it?

BettySpaghetti · 20/03/2006 14:30

I desperately wanted to have a waterbirth with my two but it didn't happen.
With DD I had to be induced as waters broke 2 weeks before due date so wasn't allowed to use birthing pool.
With DS I managed to get the one room with the pool and a midwife who was qualified in water births but DS didn't give them chance to fill the pool!
Basically, what I'm trying to say is be open-minded as it might not happen as you want it to but if thats what you want, try and give it a go Smile

gigglinggoblin · 20/03/2006 16:47

snowdrops - i think you can ask at any stage. at our hospital it was 1st come 1st served, if you wanted the pool and no one was in it it was yours! you couldnt pre-book it for obvious reasons but they recommended you tell the mw on the phone that you wanted it when you rang to say you were going in, that way they wouldnt use the room for someone who wasnt using the pool. talk to your mw before you go into labour tho, i think if you are at risk of complications they may say no.

Blu · 20/03/2006 16:51

I had a pool (at home) for labour with my first baby, and thought it was brilliant. I was in labour for 28 hours, and didn't need any other pain relief (I had started off on TENS before I got into the pool - I think that got my endorphins up).
Didn't deliver in the pool - DS was OP and we had to go to hospital for ventouse after I had been pushing for hours- but the pool made the labour a doddle.

earthtomummy · 20/03/2006 17:03

Had a hospital water birth with my 3rd. It was fantastic. The water really helped with the pain and I didn't tear - 1st baby I had an episiotomy and 2nd I had a nasty 2nd deg. tear, but I don't know if the water helped to prevent tearing - I've heard it can. I delie=vered DD in the water but not the placenta - by then I wanted to get out and it took a while. I realy couldn't recommend u=it highly enough. I was really mobile and it didn't feel as jarring as the 1st 2. Had my music on..I suppose you won't necessarily know if you'll enjoy being in water or not, but I'm someone who tends to head for the bath when I have period pains or tummy ache. Good luck!

sharklet · 20/03/2006 21:48

It was wonderful wonderful wonderful. I'd definately recommend it. I felt far less pressured and very relaxed uner the cirumstances.

Miaou · 20/03/2006 21:51

Best thing I ever did Smile - reduced the pain of the contractions by at least 50% and I didn't need any other pain relief (was my third, mind you)

carol3 · 20/03/2006 22:19

fantastic had number 3 at home in a pool, hired the pool for a month and it was wonerful in the last few weeks to spend the evening lying in a warm pool heaven. Made the birth much easier

BonyM · 20/03/2006 22:29

We hired a pool for dd2's birth a year ago today (Smile). It was wonderful - got into the water in the middle of a contraction and the pain just melted away - it was bliss.

Didn't actually give birth in the pool as felt I needed to be on dry land to push, but would highly recommend it. If I were to have any more babies (which I'm not! Grin) I would have to have a pool again.

Gillian76 · 20/03/2006 22:35

Haven't as yet but have never heard anything negative from anyone who has. Will definitely if we manage to have another :)
